Immense reluctance characterized her every step as she approached the office of THEO BECKETT.[break][break]

She had no desire to be here, but even she wasn't in a position to reject an underboss's official summons. It would speak of disharmony, and she'd been accused of that enough to know better than to feed those flames.[break][break]

A single, firm knock on the door announced her presence before she opened it.[break][break]

"You wanted to see me?" she said bluntly, regarding him with a hard stare as she stepped forward. Everything in her posture and tone, she hoped, conveyed professionalism and nothing more.[break][break]

She couldn't decide if she should close the door behind her.

a single knock is all it takes to announce her arrival. how timely of her. he's occupied with scribbling in what appears to be a journal; she and most in the upper brass would come to be familiar with his note-taking; how strict and diligent he can be at times with it.

finally, he puts his fountain pen down between the pages of the journal and closes it, pushing it to the side of his desk before gesturing to the chair.

She suppressed a groan as she shut the door behind her, acquiescing to privacy against her better judgment. His diligent notetaking only irked her more, reminding her that he could be reliable when he wanted to be.[break][break]

How arbitrary that fickle nature of his was.[break][break]

"If you insist," was all she said as she took the offered chair, finding no comfort in it despite how well-appointed it might have been. The company across from her was enough to leave her on edge.[break][break]

A raised eyebrow awaited his explanation for inviting her here, arms crossing expectantly.[break][break]

The ordinariness of the room made the strangeness of this encounter all the more startling.[break][break]

Elisabeth's expression shifted from shocked, to puzzled, to suspicious, before she finally managed to force it into something resembling gratitude. This was not her forte; it took considerable effort to grit her teeth into a smile.[break][break]

"...Thank you, Underboss Beckett."[break][break]

It was like nails on a chalkboard to hear herself say that aloud.[break][break]

A restlessness took hold of her, leg swaying to and fro as she broke away from his eye contact.[break][break]

"How do you think I am? I succeeded in declan walsh's task." She shrugged. "All is as it should be."[break][break]

his expression does not change nearly as much as hers do; it doesn't change at all, in fact, as he continues looking at her with nothing more than his usual stoicism, as though this was any other conversation.

"succeeded would be downplaying it."

and it's not like her to diminish her efforts in favor of being humble, of all things. he's never once associated that word with her.

what happened atop mount chimney can be spun into the foundations of a redemption story. from all his experience maneuvering narratives through the media, he knows just how powerful that story can be should it be allowed to flourish.

in all honesty, he would have preferred if kyle lopez had lived instead, the two having bonded in the brief instances they've encountered one another. the late champion is also the easier enemy.

sliding the drawer of his desk open, he reaches in for a small glass case containing a single flower, its petals muted black and white and dusted with soot.

he places it on the desk before her, then asks,

The hint of a smile on THEO BECKETT's face eerily reminded her of their encounter in the medical ward, and she quickly averted her gaze from it to the flower he handed over to her. Drenched in soot, she could only assume it had been collateral damage in the mess that they'd made of Mt. Chimney.[break][break]

Fitting, that everything with MATIAS SILPH had begun and ended in that blighted place. They always were the types of people to burn down the world with them.[break][break]

A tiny smile of her own peeked through, entertained by her own dark humor, before the underboss's other question registered.[break][break]

"...Did I love MATIAS SILPH? You're joking."[break][break]

If the flower hadn't already been wilting, the withering look she'd aimed at THEO BECKETT now would have been enough for the white of its petals to curdle and shrivel with the depth of her disdain.[break][break]

Her nails cut into the glass.[break][break]

"No," she said flatly, the single word as clinical and precise as the plunge of a scalpel. "I never loved him. I'm not an idiot, Beckett."[break][break]

"But it's clear you think I'm one," her eyes silently accused him with their glower.

the accusation in her eyes never find him as his gaze moves to his journal. he flips it open and scribbles, muttering "never loved him," as he does so. after a few moments as though to double-check his work, he closes the journal and returns it to the side.

"it must have been terrifying up there. i cannot fathom what it must have been like. truly."

he fishes for a pack of cigarettes on his desk before pinching one between his lips. he lights it, the click and clack instant as a small fire alights between them.

"to watch the man you knew succumb to the corruption. to not have anyone there to help you. i suppose we have to be grateful for the love he felt."

smoke flows.

"you wouldn't be here otherwise."

Her posture stilled, becoming almost regal as she squared her shoulders. This shift in conversation, this subtle inclination towards flattery, echoed at old memories.[break][break]

Kalos had been filled with conversations like this one, where daggers hid behind pretty words and idle praise. You couldn't let your guard down, just because someone disarmed you with a silver tongue.[break][break]
