her eyes opened to bright lights. it was a place of neon, vaguely reminiscent of another world recently linked to their own – but this was not the anemic, broken city of lesser megalopolis. this place was thriving.[break][break]

the realization quickly dawned on her that she’d had company before. a cellmate, who was nowhere around.[break][break]

”shred!?” she called out, trying to remember how she’d gotten there, and what had happened to him.[break][break]

and the chain. it was gone too.[break][break]

she began to wander through the disorienting city. at first sight of a megalopolan, her first instinct was to duck behind a building to observe. as she did, she noticed the sign above them that read… it read nothing. it looked scattered and out of focus.[break][break]

she took another cautious step back as megalopolan eyes spotted her too from across the street – but even at their distance, she could somehow know that they were not that bright violet, nor did they hold the crazed suffering of others she’d seen before.[break][break]

distracted, she bumped into someone behind her and spun, gasping.[break][break]

”nomi!” she wrapped arms around her impulsively, and then lingered, trying to decide if she was real. ”are you hurt?”[break][break]

Visionary?[break][break]
Her eyes snapped open.
Her cell was gone. Greyson Connors was gone. She was standing amidst a city so bright, it nearly blinded her - the vibrant neon a stark contrast to the dark, muted prison she had been trapped within. Her mouth parted in surprise, and she stared, wide-eyed, at the bustling streets.[break][break]
Megalopolians - dozens of them? hundreds of them? - hurried about, on their way to various locations: glittering glass skyscrapers, restaurants, and shops. These were not the guards from the prison, she quickly realized. These were simply...citizens. Regular folk, of various ages, going about their business within the city they called home.[break][break]
A city in its prime: the pulsating potential of commerce, of innovation, of progress coloring its every angle. She had visited a shadow of this city several times, and she could see the skeleton of that place within the body of this much larger, more alive version.[break][break]
"Ultra Megalopolis?" She breathed, disbelieving. "But how can that be?"[break][break]
Arms wrapped around her, and Nomi startled. A warm embrace engulfed her, and the voice that spoke to her was blessedly familiar. Nomi gasped as she recognized it, returning the hug with equal fervor.[break][break]
"Lulu!" She exclaimed. "You're here too? Did you come from the prison?"[break][break]
She glanced down at herself in response to Lulu's concerned inquiry, and her hands suddenly went to her throat - where she found the absence of the TOXIC CHAIN. The mask was gone too. Her bruises, aches, and pains persisted, but she was...she was free.[break][break]
"I'm okay," she assured her sister. "Are you allright?" And then, because it was Lulu who had found her, Nomi made another connection. "Are we...is this a dream?"

was it her mind playing tricks? maybe, maybe not. but one thing was almost certainly true: she was dreaming.[break][break]

”yes,” she was there from the prison. the prison did exist – or was it just another trick of minds through way of the crystal? did it even matter what was real anymore, now that it all flowed together?[break][break]

”i’m fine.” i think. more or less.[break][break]

she pulled away to look at their surroundings again. the megalopolan she’d met eyes with had lost interest, walking away with their children in an act of utter abnormality.[break][break]

”i think so… but not ours. dreams are made from memories and desires.” the pieces began to fall together. ”i’ll bet this dream belongs to the guards. it's what they all want: to return home.”[break][break]

"Home..." Nomi echoed, fascinated.[break][break]
Lulu's theory was sound. The more Nomi watched the citizens of Ultra Megalopolis, the more it made sense. In fact, Nomi felt suddenly certain that their guards were somewhere within the nearby crowd.[break][break]
"But how do we return home?"[break][break]
There were so many questions Nomi wanted to dissect: was this dream possible because of the Tera crystals embedded into their prison? Was this the same phenomenon as the shared dream of Galar so many of her fellow Rockets half-remembered having at the Ancient Tomb? But they simply did not have the time to discuss every hypothesis, to pick apart the science of it all: they needed to figure out how to escape the prison.[break][break]
Something occurred to her, then.[break][break]
"Was there someone in the cell with you? I was imprisoned with a member of the Elite Four, a man named Greyson Connors."[break][break]
As if expecting to see Greyson emerge from the shop across the street, Nomi let her gaze drift. As she tried to make sense of why she had been separated from him, even though they had fallen asleep in the same space, something else pricked the edges of her consciousness...something familiar. A distant network of connected minds...[break][break]

the tera crystals she wanted to say – but what about it? what, if it wouldn’t react to their clear desires to break away from their bonds? they all surely wished to be free, but the prison was chaos. screams and rattling bars and a cacophony of emotions.[break][break]

”maybe if we could get everyone on the same page, the same… wavelength, we could sway the effects of the tera crystals to our side. but i don’t even know if that’s how it works, and considering the collection of people they’ve gathered...” it would be damn near impossible.[break][break]

she noticed nomi’s attention drift, wondering what was going through her head. still, she didn’t miss the opportunity to warn her.[break][break]

”nomi, Greyson Connors tried to kill me in the giant chasm. he’s dangerous.” she had gathered that the avatars were as powerless as the rest of them in that prison. the elite four towered over the tiny visionary. ”please be careful. don’t trust him.”[break][break]

"You'd think our collective desire to escape would have affected the Tera Crystals by now," Nomi sighed, unknowingly speaking Lulu's apprehensive thoughts aloud. "Perhaps something is...interfering with them?"[break][break]
But what? Nomi pictured the prison's layout in her mind, considering the various elements that could be limiting the Tera energy - or siphoning it away somehow. Perhaps they were powering this dream? She glanced at a passing Megalopolian, brow furrowing in contemplation.[break][break]
Then Lulu snapped Nomi out of her reverie by telling her a piece of information so shocking, she forgot about the Tera Crystals entirely.[break][break]
"What?" She blinked rapidly, trying to make sense of Lulu's words. Greyson had tried to kill Lulu? "Are you sure it was him?" She blurted out the question without thinking, realizing after the fact how uncharacteristic it was for her to question the story her own adopted sister was telling her.[break][break]
She blushed, clearing her throat.[break][break]
"I'm sorry, Lulu. It's been...hard, these past few days." That was an understatement, and she knew her expression reflected her despair. "He's been kind to me...has helped me get through this. I - I believe you, though. He hates Rocket, as an entity. But - " She paused, trying to find the right words. "He also...I think he can be swayed. To help against the DRK Triad, I mean. I'll be careful, though."[break][break]
Would Lulu seek revenge? Had their fight been part of some larger conflict, or had Greyson sought her out specifically?[break][break]
Nomi chewed her lip, troubled.

”you’d think,” she echoed, and agreed about interference with the crystals, ”there has to be.” but what could possibly be so powerful as to stifle such a material that had spread like weeds since its arrival and threatened their existence?[break][break]

she looked almost offended at the question about Greyson Connors. “of course i’m sure. you don’t forget the face of someone who tries to kill you.”[break][break]

the rest was shocking enough to recoil.[break][break]

was it redemption she was suggesting? a call to their side? convincing him not to hate them, and to play nice?[break][break]

what the visionary did not know was the agreement that had already been made with Cillian Quinn. revenge was a quinn tradition, and as lulu's eyes searched nomi’s, their differences had never felt quite so clear.[break][break]

too much mercy. not enough loyalty.[break][break]

Lulu's sudden flash of hatred caught Nomi off guard. And then the other woman's expression darkened, eyes narrowing in suspicion. It reminded Nomi of the way she used to look at the Unown, at least to some degree. Distrustful, perhaps even disgusted. Except this time, the revulsion was directed at Nomi. Or rather, her words regarding Greyson Connors.[break][break]
He really did try and kill her, Nomi realized. Why hadn't she believed it at first? PENELOPE LIVY had tried to kill her. The League was full of hypocrites and murderers, no different than Rocket, at the end of the day.[break][break]
But she needed them. She needed all of them. League, Rocket, civilians. If they didn't stand united, then their world would be destroyed.[break][break]
"Lulu..."[break][break]
How could she explain this? Did they even have time?[break][break]
"I won't let him hurt you again."[break][break]
She meant it, but there was a pleading note to her voice. A please-believe-me false promise, hidden beneath the sincerity of her sisterly affections. If Greyson Connors agreed to turn his resources, attention, and battle prowess on the DRK Triad, she would let him. She would not allow harm to come to him, either.[break][break]
Not yet. Not until he'd played his part.[break][break]
But do you feel the same about Livy?[break][break]
A shadow fell upon her heart, then. A sick, twisting feeling of betrayal and uncertainty. In the midst of their shared, waking dream, she held onto the only scrap she could.[break][break]
"But let's try and get out of this terrible place first."

she saw red. they could all burn, irredeemable, untrustworthy.[break][break]

and how absolutely sickening to hear that it was fine, because oh helpless she would be protected like an infant.[break][break]
