Working with Achilles had proved to be a rewarding but taxing endeavor. [break][break]

Eddie had thought that much of the legwork involved in befriending the Gouging Fire had been done in the Chasm; after all, he and Michael Navidson had faced off against a terrible foe with the Entei-esque creature at their side, so surely the paradox Pokemon had developed some sort of kinship with him after fighting as brothers-in-arms. [break][break]

As it turned out, it was a little more complicated than that. Achilles was still sort of... feral, for lack of a better term? He was prone to bounding off after the first poor Pokemon that scampered across their path, and possessed a willfulness that made him difficult to command at times. It was frustrating, to say the least, and Eddie was at his wits end trying to figure out how to win the Pokemon over. [break][break]

That's when he was struck by what he considered to be a particular stroke of genius. Eddie already knew someone that knew a lot about really old Pokemon, right? And Achilles was practically prehistoric, so maybe this expert could share their own insights on how to finally befriend such a prideful creature. And sure, maybe the Gouging Fire wasn't from the distant Hisui, but that probably didn't make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things... probably. [break][break]

“Yo, Yuina!” Eddie called with a friendly wave, spotting the young woman farther down the path, “Thanks for meetin' me out here!” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire at his side didn't pay much mind to the trainer or the company they now shared. The paradox Pokemon simply lounged in feline repose, luxuriating in the sun's light and grooming a paw with what Eddie knew was pointed disinterest.

Perhaps she had been a little over zealous in telling Eddie so much about her mission and what it was she was trying to do in regards to the Hisuian Pokemon of the region, and in kind the Paradoxes that could now be found within the chasm's depths too. Where she was looking to study and learn more about them, and was working with some of her own... She by no means was an expert? And certainly hadn't yet tried to 'train' anyone else in the ways that she interacted with her Pokemon...[break]
It wasn't as if she had a way to bring someone to the wilds of Hisui where Pokemon didn't care for the difference between a human or Pokemon opponent...[break][break]
In any case though, Yuina did agree to meet with Eddie, she couldn't very well turn him away. She considered him a great friend already, and if he was asking for her help... well... she would try her best...[break]
He chose well, somewhere isolated, off the beaten path, not too many people had a reason to travel north from Rustboro on the regular, not unless they were sight seeing or trying to get up north to Fallarbor town... That was good, the less opportunity for interference the better. She wasn't sure exactly what the temperament of his paradox in question was, but to minimize over stimulation was a good start.[break][break]
There in the distance, she could see Eddie, and one of the ceratops that roamed in the depths beneath the icelands... And even as he called out to her, raising his voice, making himself known, she was relieved to see at least that the ceratops didn't seem to pay him any mind. It was perhaps not inherently aggressive... For now.[break]
She didn't change her demeanor, in fact she made sure to stand up that much straighter, keeping her shoulders square, eyes steady and focused. Thus far to Omura, her own ceratops, to show weakness was to show disrespect, and in an animalistic body language, showing disrespect was a one way ticket to sowing aggression.[break][break]
"Eddie, it's good to see you too," she greeted, but not until she got a bit closer to where she wouldn't have to raise her voice. She wasn't about to try and make a display of authority in front of the paradox.

As the Elite Ranger drew near, Achilles yawned and blinked slowly, opening his piercing blue eyes to stare her down in appraisal. Eddie, having grown increasingly familiar with some of the Gouging Fire's more troublesome habits, gave the paradox Pokemon a light nudge with his foot, [break][break]

“Hey, be nice.” [break][break]

Achilles huffed as he rose to his feet. Eddie was pretty sure that his words had fallen on deaf ears. So he just shrugged, turning back to Yuina with a bright smile as though he weren't standing next to a creature that could rip him to shreds, [break][break]

“Thanks again for meeting me out here! Hope the journey wasn't too rough.” [break][break]

He paused, rubbing his chin, [break][break]

“Oh! And this is Achilles; he's the paradox 'mon I toldja about!” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire didn't voice any acknowledgment of his trainer's introduction. Instead, his reptilian eyes drew into narrow slits, and he sniffed the air as he cautiously eyed Yuina. Perhaps he knew that she was in the company of his primordial rivals, though Achilles seemed more possessed of apprehensive curiosity than predatory vigor. Perhaps he also knew that he was outnumbered three-to-one.

Drawing closer, Yuina studied the ceratops as she neared, watching it and watching Eddie as the two interacted. Thus far, still, the temperament didn't seem to be too much of a concern, unless it just wasn't bothered by Eddie. That either meant it saw Eddie as no threat, or so much so that it was only waiting for a right opportunity to strike and move on...[break][break]
"Of course Eddie, I couldn't give it another thought. I'm very interested in seeing another ceratops in comparison to Omura, the one I've met," Yuina returned, already she had noticed a couple of differences between the two. Omura was a different coloring, his crest in particular was different than that of Eddie's 'Achilles'.[break]
Yuina stopped short of approaching closer, glancing again to the ceratops in question, she watched its body language, the way it stared her down. It wasn't out of a place of aggression though. She had to assume that its senses were just as keen and its natural instincts just as powerful that it could either smell or sense that she too had come into contact with another of its kind. If all went well, she might even be able to study two of the same species interacting, but she certainly wasn't going to push the envelope so soon.[break][break]
"What have you learned about him so far? Anything at all," Yuina wondered, there was still so little gathered about any of the species that dwelled in the depths below. Any information, no matter how minute it might seem was information that wouldn't have been gleaned before.

At first brush, Eddie thought he was pretty clueless about what the Gouging Fire was actually like, but upon further consideration, he realized he had more to offer in reply than he initially imagined, [break][break]

“Well, he's kinda arrogant, ta start with.” [break][break]

Achilles huffed, his exhalation halfway between a purr and a growl, [break][break]

“Ya are too,” Eddie asserted as he side-eyed the big cat, who turned away in indignation, “Like, he's still got this real 'king'a the jungle' thing goin' on. Sometimes he won't listen to a word I say. But-” [break][break]

Eddie could have sworn that he saw the Gouging Fire's head tilt just slightly back towards his direction, [break][break]

“He's never tried ta maul me, either. I first met 'im down in the Chasm, and he helped me an' a buddy take out this bigass Walkin' Wake that was rippin' outposts ta shreds. I get the feelin' that he doesn't see me as a future snack, I don't think, but I also get the vibe that he doesn't respect me neither. Sometimes he'll tear off after littler Pokemon just 'cause he can, or just 'cause he's hungry, even though I feed the guy plenty well enough.” [break][break]

But maybe that was because Eddie kept the Gouging Fire in a dingy old Poke Ball like he did most of the rest of his team. He hadn't realized that something a little fancier would even be necessary until he first started pouring over a dragonology guide he had found online, and though it hadn't proved all that helpful when dealing with this specifically leonine dragon, it had been an incredible boon when working with a couple other members of his team.

Listening carefully and intently, Yuina drew in Eddie's words as he elaborated on what he knew so far of the ceratops. For what it was worth, he was very observant, even if he may not think so. Surface level observations to some, but intrinsic clues to what it was Achilles was truly experiencing to those who could understand.[break][break]
Yuina nodded along, ocassionaly glancing to the ceratops as Eddie continued, her expression thoughtful and earnest.[break]
"You're very observant Eddie, we could turn you into a conservationist yet," Yuina smiled, still remaining right where she stood, but she changed her stance a bit as her shoes shifted in the grass beneath her.[break][break]
"What we have to understand about these Pokemon is that first and foremost, they were never meant to be here, and we still don't know why they are to begin with," Yuina began, a very pointed view perhaps, but it was true. They were anomalies that were never meant to be a part of the natural environment they now found themselves in.[break]
"These Pokemon are seeing everything here in this environment for the first time, and instinctually they have to figure out where they stand and how they can fit into what's around them."[break][break]
"This can come in many different forms, depending on the temperament, fear, aggression, and anything in between. Arrogance to you might be Achilles' way of observing what's around him and working to figure out what his place is," she offered.

Eddie grinned wide at that small bit of praise, and that smile did not falter as he listened to Yuina's take on the situation, [break][break]

“Huh, guess that tracks,” Eddie mused, glancing sidelong at the Gouging Fire again, “Must be hard, gettin' uprooted from wherever they came from.” [break][break]

And harder still to have been subjected to that a second time, he suddenly realized. Just because he had met Achilles in the Giant Chasm didn't mean that it was his original home, because the Chasm itself didn't really come to be as it currently was until that whole business with the giant dragon and the genie. And Yuina was right; little was understood about where exactly paradox Pokemon did come from. Unlike the temporally displaced Pokemon of Hisui, paradox Pokemon were oddities in and of themselves, things that shouldn't have existed in the first place and things that were without a home that could be traced back to through the annals of history. Something about that fact made Eddie's heart ache,[break][break]

“Well damn, now I just feel bad for the poor guy,” he chuckled bashfully, rubbing the back of his neck. [break][break]

The Gouging Fire finally turned back to the both of them, and Eddie thought he saw something different in those reptilian blue eyes. They widened somewhat, alight with something uncharacteristically vulnerable for the chimeric creature.

There were a lot of things to consider when it came to the paradox Pokemon and their presence within Hoenn, not the least of which being that they weren't supposed to be among the natural environment at all. They were disruptors, they could very well upend an entire balance that was already rocky within the region because of how many various species could be found.[break][break]
Yuina watched Eddie consider her words though, but she watched the ceratops closer... The realizations were dawning and bringing things to light.[break][break]
"The other most important thing to realize is... it's entirely possible, and probably very likely that they've never seen humans before? We're a strange, alien species to them just like they are to us," Yuina offered in addition, much like Hisuian Pokemon that were drawn out of space time. Hisui was so sparce with human settlements, it wasn't out of the question that a given Pokemon had never encountered a human before.[break][break]
"Pokemon that we know today have an intelligence that comes from generations and generations of coexisting with humans, to where some Pokemon even go out to seek a human instead of a human seeking a Pokemon. These species have no such concept, it's not second nature to them," she theorized as well.[break][break]
"In fact, it could be entirely possible that they're not truly 'pokemon' at all. Their intelligence levels and capabilities are vastly different from any species that we know in this environment. Like Ultra Beasts in a way. You can't 'train' them the same way one would train even something difficult like a Gyarados. From working with my own, it seems possible that they are more prone to mutual understanding rather than 'obedience'."

He stooped down to meet Achilles at eye-level, and the draconic Pokemon leered right back. Eddie held that gaze, though, and his smile grew wider, [break][break]

“Sorry I've been such a bonehead, bud.” [break][break]

An admission of wrongdoing was always the best first step of a good apology. Achilles huffed, and Eddie continued, [break][break]

“I know where I've goofed now, though. I oughta be treatin' you more like my partner in crime than just any ol' team member, huh?” [break][break]

Eddie extended a hand, carefully offering it in a gesture of peace and an act of vulnerability. After all, Achilles could easily take off the limb if the trainer's sentiment displeased him, [break][break]

The Gouging Fire seemed to consider this as bright blue eyes bored into deep brown. Did the Gouging Fire really understand the weight of Eddie's words? There was kind of a language barrier, sure, but maybe the leonine paradox could read the man's intent. Eddie certainly hoped so as Achilles raised on great paw and – [break][break]

Gently laid it against Eddie's open palm. Eddie grinned as his fingers gently curled around talons that could gut almost any creature in the region. He turned back to Yuina, happier than anything.
