when caelan had heard about something supposedly picking off sheep, their first idea had been to brush it aside. sure, things had been weird lately; they'd heard that more than enough from gossiping farmers. but for wooloo to have more predators around here? it seemed unheard of.

it wasn't until the other night, when their lycanroc- dog- had stirred up a commotion that they decided to give it some credit. they hadn't actually seen what it was, beyond a shadow moving away from the light, but it was enough to make dog upset, fur bristling as he had eventually curled up on the porch.

they had made a request the following morning for help. they'd rather deal with it themself, but whatever it was seemed clever- and making sure it was gone would be best for everyone.

that's why they had ended up here, waiting for their hired help with dog pacing restless circles around them.

Caelan's hired help was among the best in western Hoenn: the very Ranger Captain of Rustboro. Normally, she would delegate such a simple mission to a trainee, but her trainees weren't in during the weekend. With many of Rustboro's Rangers on high alert due to the number of famous figures going missing at the same time, she had to take matters into her own hands.

As much as she wanted to impress Caelan, a Sygna Suit would be a bit overkill. Instead, she would arrive on the scene astride Balan, one mean-looking Shiny Liepard whose sheen was the color of blood. The lithe creature's gait looked so rough that those not familiar with the Captain may have questioned how comfortable it was on the dark-type's saddle. When reined to a stop, the feline let out a menacing purr that rattled the air around them and making his rider's hair stand on end.

"Caelan?" Shalin asked, waving toward them while still Liepard-back. "Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro," she introduced herself as Leo the Luxray caught up, roughly the same size as the Liepard. "These two are Balan and Leo, and they'll help us track down whatever's behind the raids on the farm." Balan side-eyed the Lycanroc as Leo took a seat on the grass between them both, resting his paws.

Caelan isn’t sure what they’re expecting from their help, but, as the Liepard and the trainer on top of it start to approach, they know one thing for sure- that it wasn’t this. The large cat Pokemon moves at such a pace that it can’t be comfortable, and, for a second, anything Caelan had rehearsed in their mind blanks at the sight. When she greets them, they simply nod, brows furrowing in a way they’re sure conveys their never-ending confusion.

“Thanks for coming out.” Their tone is brisk, in the way that only someone unused to talking to people could be, and they don’t bother waiting for her to say anything else before they’re continuing on their way. A snap of their fingers brings Dog to them, where he lags behind, and they keep walking until they’re on the edge of the field, where they had been the other night.

“When I saw it, it came from-” a nod towards where the field starts to meet the forest; whatever it was would still have to come a long way to snatch a Pokemon, but it wasn’t completely out of the question. “There. Whatever it is, it’s smart enough to know when to run from people.”

Though Balan's large saddle was designed to mitigate the stresses the big cat's flexing back would put on Shalin's body, it was still quite a bit rougher than riding horseback. The Captain was used to getting dumbfounded looks from those she worked with, particularly when her giant bug-types were involved. Perhaps unbeknownst to Caelan, the big cats were tame by her standards.

"Leo can see through almost anything; if our attacker is in those woods, they won't be able to hide from him," Shalin bragged. "And Balan's quiet when he runs. They've both got keen tracking senses, too. Now how about we get out there and find a trail?" The Luxray would gently nuzzle Caelan if they allowed it before getting to serious work.

Caelan’s question about the big cat Pokemon, unspoken as it is, goes unanswered; none of the Pokemon seemed bothered, though, and their confusion is ignored just as quickly as the ranger and her Pokemon follow them through the land. “Dog should be able to pick up a good trail, too.”

The wolf Pokemon is restless in his own way, but he pushes his way to Caelan’s side with a huff to signal that he’s ready. “If something’s there, he’ll probably run it into the ground.” it’s half a warning and half an explanation of the Pokemon’s stubbornness as they prepare for the more serious job.

“I’m ready whenever you are.” As they say it, they reach to scratch the Luxray’s chin absentmindedly, a response to the cat Pokemon’s nuzzle.

Leo purred in appreciation of Caelan's scritches before crouching near them, as if beckoning them to hop on. She was going to ask if the Lycanroc was trained to carry them across the land, but refrained from it when she noticed the rock-type's aggression, already sniffing to get on the trail.

Regardless of whether Caelan rode alongside Shalin and Balan, she would try to learn more about the issue at hand. "Were you able to ask the farmers if they knew what kind of Pokémon was snatching the Wooloo?" she asked them. "We can narrow our tactics if we know what we're hunting down."
