Pieced back together, with flecks of gold as glue, the councilwoman felt liberated here. As though shackles had never robbed her of life.

It was hard making out the roaming faces. Many were indistinguishable, melting into the overabundance of color behind, while some carried a familiarity that dwindled compared to Morningstar.

the better half of her time here has been spent living as though it were her last day on earth. it very well might be.

after her foray with elisabeth, the shattering of the lingering remains of the mask's vision had been left behind. she stopped chasing memories of a future she knows will never be hers, a joy that will not be had because deep in her subconscious (so close it is to her, here) she knows she will wake and when she does, she will be shackled in the worst way imaginable.

she cannot bear it.

it's not a building penelope finds her amidst. it's on a bridge, her legs swinging in the air, contemplative look on her face. one moment the councilwoman isn't there and then the next she is and freya reaches out too, helping her up should she need it.

"not a trick." she leans forward, thinks back on their last conversation. something from the real world to bring here. her voice drops to a choked whisper: "i'm scared, livy."

Both addicts, one determined to quit, the other reeling from withdrawal, drool still fresh on her bottom lip.

Below Penelope's fingers was solid flesh. Real and solid, still carrying the scent of their lives beyond the cells. It was hard to care much about the vanity of possibilities when reality had gone lost for so long. Leaning into the warmth of forgotten days, Penelope took her seat along the bridge, her legs joining Freya, just with harder swings.

A mop of red overtook most of The Coveted's features, spilling blood across the nose and cheeks. If not for the brightness of her eyes, there would be little to stare back at, much less confess to. Still, she was here. Defanged and all.

"Freya," Honeyed words dripped between them, warmed from mutual understanding. No other woman in Hoenn could understand what it meant to be here, fighting for survival, knowing what would come to the world if their blood were to spill. They had to survive - if not for themselves, then for the people back at home.

the phantoms still linger in every reflection, but she doesn't look too closely at them. she turns away from that madness, staving off the inevitable for a time longer, but even that has her riddled with duress. the nail of her pointer scratches into her thumb, drawing blood, but she does not seem to notice.

penelope worries about the implications of the greater whole, but freya's misery, as it so often has in the past, is wrapped thickly around herself.

"they showed us visions in the mask. visions we'll all believe when we wake up. and i cannot stop it." frustration breaks her and she draws in a sharp breath, throat thickening, cloying with a thick mist that isn't there.

it was hard to see differences through the murky lens of selfish desires.

Immediate memories drew her to the many different visions the league has uncovered, each one haunting reminders of Hoenn's perceived future. Did Freya witness one of those? Or, was it worse? If so, then how?

what did she see? the water shimmers. forms start to take shape in her mind's eye, but she buries her head in her hands, nails scratching into her hairline before they can manifest.

"no. no. i won't bring them here. i won't be controlled. i won't be manipulated. not again, penny. not again."

all of her fight collapses in on itself and she hunches inward, knees tucking up, noiseless sobs shaking her body.

Worry nestled into her features, forcing a selfish woman soft. There was kinship in the grief they felt. A connection many attempt to kindle within themselves, but lack the experience necessary to fan the flame.

"you've no power here," she says bitterly. dreams at their fingertips - flexible, malleable - but impermeable and transient. anything they create here, anything they try to fortify, will be stripped away as soon as the dawn greets them.

this is no respite. this is still a prison, but here is where she will go mad. here is where they will lose themselves.

her shoulder stiffens, all of her trembles, and she grits her teeth, not knowing how to surrender to a touch so simple. "i saw my happiness," she whispers, allowing that much. "my city returned to me." king and delta standing against the backdrop of a salt-bleached city.

the taste of brine and dragonfire on her tongue.

"but it's the same. it's not real. it's the same as when - " she starts and the dream reacts to the hammering of her heart, the more she tries to shove it away. the fog beneath their dangling legs turns a soft shade of pink.

"tell me what you saw," she gasps.

If simple puzzles were a sin, Penelope Livy would be set for the depths of hell. One simple string of words and the entirety of her willpower hinged off the twinged goodwill they'd built. Even still, temptations made efforts to coax her tongue into becoming a viper. To lash back against insult still ringing in her ears.

so they were the same. after all this and some of the two most powerful women in hoenn want a future with a loved one, in peace. it all would have been easier if her heart still ached for ash, if she'd seen a pyre and billowing smoke instead of that little girl's face, eyes as bright as her father's.

"i saw a lie and when i'm awake, i believe it, and i cannot stop it. i cannot stop it, penny. and it is going to fucking - " she shoves the palms of her hands in her eyes, squeezes them shut, "break me again."

Whether it be the shackles still weighing on her wrists, or the dream still carved into her memory - all she could do was grasp at the possibility of escape. Not from the prison, but from herself. The enemy still sewed into her skin, listening to her every thought, echoing the ghouls, plunging the truth into shadows.
