Everything about Elisabeth's manner of sitting perfectly still belied her discomfort with marcus kotov's office.[break][break]

Her posture was straight as a rod, shoulders squared and chin lifted high as if she was in audience with declan walsh himself. She greeted the man across from her with a practiced, manicured smile that didn't reach her eyes. Hands politely folded on her lap, legs delicately crossed at the ankle.[break][break]

"This shouldn't take long," she said, the picture of gracious composure as she let out an airy chuckle. "You see, I'm quite fine. Nothing worth commenting on at all."[break][break]

Privately, she seethed and wondered at which higher up she had to blame for suggesting this company-mandated therapy session. With no confirmed name in mind, she settled on THEO BECKETT, and let her grudges for him intensify in the ensuing silence.

marcus' knowledge of Elisabeth Fiorelli is superficial. she's an underboss and an avatar — and someone he pictures in his mind to be more like @cillian than THEO BECKETT on those factors alone. he's read reports, heard things offhand, but mostly she has remained an enigmatic superior. [break][break]he's curious, now, to see who she really is. [break][break]they finally meet in team rocket's headquarters (after some noticeable scheduling difficuly) under the duress of a mandatory appointment. he looks across his desk at her, observing her body language. she's sitting stiff and still in her chair, like she hopes she might become invisible for the next hour. [break][break]her words mirror a similar discomfort. she had been kidnapped — surely that is something worth commenting on. but he recognizes some people need time to open up, so he just nods and writes it down on his notepad. [break][break]"that is excellent to hear, underboss fiorelli," he says, his words drawn out by the distraction of writing. "unfortunately, we have another ... "[break][break]he twists his wrist to look at his watch. [break][break]"fifty-nine minutes of this session left."[break][break]he looks at her. [break][break]"we could sit in silence for the duration, certainly, but i find that talking passes the time much quicker." he shrugs, breaking up the formality with a casual gesture. "it doesn't have to be about the incident, either; just telling me a little about yourself suffices."

'The incident.' It made everything sound so grave and final.[break][break]

They'd all endured the same hell; nothing she had to say, in her mind, would be any different than what anyone else had to say. If there was anything they wanted to know, she wasn't the most ideal stone to bleed intelligence from.[break][break]

She shifted in her seat, the smile becoming strained.[break][break]

"I'm not a very fascinating topic, I am afraid."[break][break]

A dismissive shrug punctuated that observation, and her eyes attempted to glean what his note-writing hand was scribbling. Beady emerald eyes glanced up at him, suspicious despite the forced pleasantry of her expression.[break][break]

"I joined Rocket as a black market poisoner. I was promoted to admin of intelligence, and eventually to underboss, where I have completed missives for declan walsh. I bear two Avatarships, which allow me to serve Rocket to my greatest capacity."[break][break]

he understands. talking about herself must feel trite at her level of infamy in the organization. she's an underboss — he imagines she's given this pitch a thousand times over. but if she doesn't want to talk about what they are meant to talk about, then he will force them through the monotony of interview-level questions until the hour passes.[break][break]on his paper, if she can abstract meaning from a doctor's penmanship, is information as mundane as the conversation. her name, the time session began, notes on her posture and that she says she's "quite fine" following her kidnapping. [break][break]"i see. you have quite the storied career."[break][break]the compliment comes out a bit flat. he pockets the topic of two avatarships for later, but the rest is just a recitation of her file, each word carefully curated to give him the correct answer. Elisabeth Fiorelli can "win" this session if she wants — it's money in his pocket whether he helps her or not — but it will come after the slow, pyrrhic march of time. "What my career lacks for in its brevity it makes up for in achievement," she answered simply.[break][break]

In her absence, she suspected someone like BARNABY FINCH would have risen to her position -- and wouldn't that be preferred, to her peers Cillian Quinn and THEO BECKETT? Admin Bee played the part of the loyal Rocket better than she did, no matter the fact both of them were acting in those roles.[break][break]

"I was born a wolf," he'd said, when they'd discussed the topic that marcus kotov brought forward now. "I didn't have a choice."[break][break]

But she'd had a choice, didn't she? Little lamb wandering into the wolf's den, hoping the blood-soaked pelt of her former predator would be enough to hide the whiteness of her fleece.[break][break]

"I'm not sure I understand your question, Dr. Kotov." She blinked once, then twice, the paleness of her skin flushed suddenly at the neck. "Isn't joining Rocket simply the most practical solution to the world we find ourselves in?"[break][break]

She brushed a stray strand of blonde hair out of her face, fixing it back neatly.[break][break]

"You can either fight for Rocket, or fall victim to its violence and destruction."[break][break]

Such certainty and conviction entered her words that her following statement should have come as no surprise.[break][break]

"I had no interest in being a victim."

"Kalos was hell on earth," she said flatly. "Whatever part of it was my home was erased a long time ago. When my late husband died, I was free to go wherever I pleased."[break][break]

A restless swinging took hold of her leg, dangling to and fro as she frowned at him. Her black heels glittered in the fluorescent light, reflecting him back in their glossy sheen.[break][break]

"Hoenn had a reputation for being a place you could lose yourself in. People can be invisible here, because so many events and people compete for attention."[break][break]

World-ending calamities made the murder of a powerful corporate figure seem small and paltry in comparison. No attention would be wasted on a widow with a checkered past hiding in the Petalburg Woods, not when there were Megalopolans and Ultra Beasts to contend with on a daily basis.[break][break]

It had taken a Ruinous Beast to tip those scales out of her favor, stripping her of whatever anonymity she'd shielded herself in.[break][break]

"I knew enough of Rocket to know I'd prefer to be one of its members than one of its targets. And as for the League, well." A disbelieving scoff inserted itself, her hand waving airily. "People in those positions, they're about as effective as their egos let them be. They preach compliance to ideals, but it's all lip service."[break][break]

Her hand returned to her lap, folding itself back into place.[break][break]

"Rocket is at least honest about what it is."

[break][break]her leg swings as she speaks, a restless metronome to the rhythm of her explanations. he sees it through his peripheral, but he doesn't lower his eyes from her face except for occasionally glance at the paper in front of him. [break][break]"that is true," he agrees. "this organization is far more upfront about what it requires out of its associates, and yet..." [break][break]his almost-criticism comes out quiet, trailing away. she's an underboss — she knows this branch of team rocket has suffered a noticeable amount of defections. he shakes his head, dismissing the subject. [break][break]"but you were wise to join us," he says instead. "and we were wise to invite you in, considering all that you've done during your tenure so far." [break][break]her reason for coming to hoenn remains at the forefront of his thoughts. [break][break]"do you ever miss being invisible?"[break][break]his gaze flickers toward the paper, but he doesn't pick up his pen. [break][break]"it must get suffocating — having two legendary pokemon and entire organizations watching you."

Her brow furrowed ever so slightly, unsure how to take his praise. Compliments unsettled her. People who spoke them usually wanted something--to lower your guard before striking at your most vulnerable moment.[break][break]

"That is the nature of service, is it not?" she deflected coolly. "We must do what we can to meet and surpass the expectations placed before us."[break][break]

Would she have done any of the monstrous things she'd done since joining Hoenn, had it not been for the threat of Rocket punishing her not existed in the forefront of her mind? The answer wasn't as cut-and-dry as she wanted to believe.[break][break]

Some heinous acts had been for her own sadistic pleasure, whether they invoked guilt after or no.[break][break]

The swinging of her leg halted abruptly at his unexpected shift in questioning, a flash of surprise registering in her expression before it was smoothed back into something resembling bored, polite affectation.[break][break]

"...I think there are many advantages to being invisible," she confessed, turning to look at anything in marcus kotov's office that might be worthy of her attention. "I had already known what a high-profile existence was like, and so I enjoyed the benefits of being unobserved. Unfortunately in our line of work, we are never meant to enjoy anonymity for long."[break][break]

A pursing of her lips punctuated the silence that followed.[break][break]

"Not if we wish to be successful in the organization, of course."

there isn't much of note in this office. Elisabeth Fiorelli would have more to stare at in his actual clinic, but here the undecorated walls mock any attempts to distract oneself. still, whatever reprieve she finds in looking away allows her to navigate her answer as successfully as the last. and the one before it. [break][break]he nods as she speaks, unable to find any weaknesses in the walls she throws up to thwart any sentimental conversations. everything is either tolerable or explained away as an unavoidable facet of team rocket life. [break][break]"i suppose that's right."[break][break]he checks his watch.[break][break]"and your avatarship ... avatarships. you have two, don't you? unprecedented, if my research is correct."[break][break]he rests his arm on his desk.[break][break]"why do you think that is? what sets you apart from the other avatars in our ranks? do you think it's possible that others may be able to accomplish what you have?"[break][break]it's a strange thought — imagining some of the other avatars he's talked to having more than one legendary pokemon living in their head. some part of him hopes she'll reject that notion, that she'll have a one-in-a-million reason as to why she has two avatarships.
