The door of the Corviknight taxi carriage opened, allowing Yumi to step out onto the sidewalk. Craning her neck slightly, she admired the elegant façade of the five-star restaurant in front of her. While she looked forward to her imminent meal, she was there for business, not pleasure, and she liked what she saw so far. [break][break]

Yumi turned to her companion. "Remember what I told you," she said, reaching out and looping their arms together in the way girls do. "Order whatever you like; it's my treat. After all, we need to put the chef to the test." [break][break]

Together, they stepped through the front door. The host led them to a table of two alongside a large window, offering them a beautiful view of the ocean. Yumi took her seat, expecting Nabi to take the opposite one.

"Relax," Nabi kept repeating in her head. "Yeah, right! How can I relax in this situation?" she would then reply back to her inner thoughts.[break][break]

The taxi ride itself was nerve-wrecking with Nabi attempting to seem distracted by looking out the window. Yumi simply made her feel that way, and she did it so effortlessly.[break][break]

However, Nabi refused to be the reason for sullying Yumi's image. She swallowed her girlish anxiety deep, deep down as they exited the cab. She appeared more calm, poised, though perhaps a bit too serious for a meal outing. She hung her arm carefully against Yumi's. "I won't hold back," she replied smoothly, mostly joking. Inside, she couldn't deny that she was more than curious to have her tastes refined and replenished. Hopefully the chef delivered on their reputation.[break][break]

She first waited for Yumi to seat herself before taking the chair from across. Even the table itself was elegantly dressed with tablecloth fancier than some of her own clothes.[break][break]

The wait was short before a server was standing by their table to greet them and immediately asking for their choice of beverages. Nabi suddenly felt her stomach tighten a bit thinking about alcohol. She was not going to let herself dance naked on a table in front of Yumi.[break][break]

"Just water for me," she said with a small squeak.

"Water for me too, please," Yumi said smoothly to the waiter. To Nabi, she said, "Smart thinking. We don't want any flavors from our drinks meddling with the flavors of the food." [break][break]

Two glasses of ice cold water were delivered promptly to their table. A few minutes later, the chef appeared to meet them. After exchanging introductions and handshakes, Yumi gestured across the table to her companion. [break][break]

"And this is my good friend, Nabi. She works for me and will be here to give her perspective on the food." [break][break]

The chef took Nabi's hand in his own, uttering a gracious, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Nabi." [break][break]

He then produced menus, one for each woman. Yumi perused hers with keen intent, before settling on crisp vegetable rolls for a shared appetizer and roasted Ducklett for her entrée.

Frankly, Nabi didn't belond here. Her unworthy status aside, she did not consider herself a food critique and was unsure how helpful she would actually be to Yumi. She would continue to act the part though. "Exactly, and the taste of the water can say a lot about a place," Nabi added on with a confident nod. "Do they add fruit for flavor, do they have dirty ice cubes, is it room temp or cold?" She had no idea what she was talking about.[break][break]

When the chef offered his hand, Nabi held it perhaps a little too firmly out of habit. His hand was strangely soft for a chef, in her opinion.[break][break]

The menus were small in size, unlike a larger chain that appeal to families with rowdy children and picky tastes. It made it easy for Nabi to peruse the selection. But yet again, she found herself in unfamiliar territory without the faintest idea of what a "confit" or "omlette du fromage" was.[break][break]

She held the menu closer and squinted her eyes, as if that would suddenly help her understand the complexities of gourmet food language. Suddenly, it was her turn to order. The unprepared Nabi cleared her throat. Ordering the same thing as Yumi would be lame and show her inexperience.[break][break]

"I think I'll try this," she said, pointing to the item. The chef gave a nod that Nabi assumed meant she had picked something delicious. She would soon find out it was a boiled and stuffed corphish.[break][break]

The chef gave a small bow before disappearing into the depths of his kitchen. Just Yumi and Nabi again.[break][break]

"I'm a little surprised you asked me to come," she finally admitted, fingers finding their way around the base of her glass for a distraction. "You don't have other friends to take out for dinner?"

Yumi's face creased into an amused smile. "Of course I have other friends, and I take them out to dinner, too. That doesn't mean I can't invite you," she said. [break][break]

Sipping her water, she gazed out the window, admiring the beautiful view of the expansive ocean. She spied a few boats upon the waves, including a cruise ship upon the horizon. Others were smaller, speedier vessels for entertainment or business. [break][break]

Turning her attention back to her friend, Yumi continued, "I'd like to catch up with you, and also get to know you better. What have you been up to lately? Are you satisfied with the work you've been doing for me?"

It was a stupid question. Of course she had other friends! Nabi wished she could have slammed her head against the table for her idiocy, just like when she had first met Yumi.[break][break]

She could not help but wonder why Yumi bothered to help her before, why she wanted to be friends with her.[break][break]

"The work is excellent!" Nabi answered perhaps a little bit too enthusiastically. She was not one to complain with the jobs Yumi had given her thus far. "It allows me to travel around and put my skills to use." She brought her arms up to the table to rest them and held her glass with both hands (was that an improper thing to do?).[break][break]

"I've been getting a lot of experiences since I came to Hoenn. You've been quite good to me, Miss Yumi." She stared through the glass and into the still water. "I've met many other people, and to be honest, I've been trying to figure myself out."[break][break]

She paused. Nabi didn't know too much about Yumi. She seemed kind and friendly. Perhaps this was also her chance to get to know her better.[break][break]

"I've been thinking about joining the rangers..." She lifted her eyes to Yumi. "I would still work for you, of course! And I'm not 100% sure anyways."

As Nabi talked, a waiter stopped by their table to deliver the appetizers Yumi had ordered. With crispy outer skin the perfect shade of golden-brown, they looked well-cooked. The black-haired woman picked one up for a closer look. [break][break]

Yumi raised an eyebrow. "Really, the Rangers? How come?" she asked, keeping her tone even and neutral. [break][break]

Of course, Nabi had no idea about Yumi's affiliation with Team Rocket, despite Casino Starlight's location in Sootopolis. For all the younger woman knew, Yumi had simply chosen that location for its economic advantage. The fact that a portion of its revenue filled the crime syndicate's coffers was a well-guarded secret. [break][break]

While she listened to Nabi's answer, Yumi crunched down on the vegetable roll. Exquisite flavors burst in her mouth, and the vegetables were not overcooked at all. Delighted, she gestured for her friend to indulge in the appetizer too.

An excellent yet simple question. Nabi was still trying to figure out the answer herself. Perhaps talking it out with Yumi would help her gain some insight.[break][break]

"During my travels, I've met a handful of people," she began, her nostrils heavily enticed by the scent of the rolls. "Many of them worked for the League in one way or another. And I thought maybe I should do what they do? Help society and whatnot?"[break][break]

She thought back to the peculiar woman in Petalburg Woods and her stories of adventures. Then, the heroic Rustboro gym leader that had broken his ties with Team Rocket. The young girl she had helped stop a bank robbery with. The coolheaded dragon leader, even the dorky biscuit guy with the charming incineroar. Nabi felt nervous, but thinking about all her encounters made her relax and feel confidence as she continued with her answer.[break][break]

"I suppose... I want to do something good like everyone else." At Yumi's gesture, she reached for a roll, mouth already salivating. She brought the roll to her lips and paused. Before biting in, she asked Yumi, "What do you think? Do you think I should join them?" Surely Yumi wouldn't lead her astray.

Yumi finished her vegetable roll as she listened to Nabi's thoughtful answer, mentally taking note of the complementary flavors of the sweet chili dipping sauce that accompanied the appetizer. Chewing, she wiped her fingertips on her napkin, piecing together a response that satisfied both women's interests. [break][break]

After all, Nabi was not just a pleasant friend, but a useful asset as well. Why give her up to the League when a connection to the Rangers could benefit Yumi and her organization? [break][break]

"I think you should do it, even just parttime," the black-haired woman said, her painted lips curving into a smile. "I'm not built for that Rangering business, but it all sounds very exciting. Will you tell me about all your adventures while on the job?"

The smile on Nabi's face widened hearing Yumi's response. It was reassuring to hear the woman she most respected give her the green light, even if she didn't require it. Nabi grabbed for another roll and quickly chomped through it, leaving bits of flakes on the tablecloth.[break][break]

"I guess I can at least try it out, part-time, like you said," she spoke while licking at oily fingertips. "And if it turns out I don't like it, then no harm in quitting." Low commitment appealed to Nabi. It would be easier to cut ties if it came to that.[break][break]

"I'd be happy to tell you about the job if anything interesting comes up," she then said. She hummed, trying to recall if anything newsworthy had happened to her recently. "I actually met Remiel Calcifet not too long ago. We were working together on a mission. He seemed..." She thought about the word. "Wise? Maybe not wise. That's for old people, I guess."[break][break]

At that moment, a new scent entered the room, and the server made his way to their table with the main course. Nabi's eyes sparkled with hungry anticipation.

Yumi's eyes lit up in a mirror image of Nabi's when waiters placed their entrées on the table. Thanking the staff, Yumi picked up her chopsticks and returned to the conversation at hand. [break][break]

"Remiel Calcifet?" she echoed, raising a slender eyebrow. She recalled the directive to kill issued by declan walsh when the former admin had left Team Rocket. [break][break]

The look she shot Nabi from across the table was one of girlish conspiracy. In a teasing voice that nevertheless suggested how little she thought of the Galarian royal, Yumi asked, "Is he as handsome as he looks in the tabloids?" [break][break]

She began to eat, her table manners graceful and elegant. A pleased hum escaped her throat at the crispiness of the duck's skin and the juiciness of the meat. After swallowing that first bite, she glanced over at her friend's plate. [break][break]

"How's your meal?"

The silverware was in Nabi's hand before the food was in front of them. Now looking at her dish, she could make out the familiar shape of a corphish, its shellfish used as a decorative piece for the main attraction, a cheesy crab salad garnished in greens and yellow spices. Nabi audibly gulped.[break][break]

Yumi's question pulled her from the food trance. "Handsome?" She thought about it, recalling his friendly eyes and soft skin (at least, from where she was, it looked soft). "I guess if you're into skinny guys," she then said. "I think muscles look good on a guy. I want someone that can throw me over their shoulder, and—" She paused, taking a moment to actually reconsider her words. "Well, never mind," she laughed softly.[break][break]

It took just one bite for Nabi to succumb to the food's enhanced flavors. She took her time with the first bite, cupping her chewing cheek with one hand and closing her eyes to enjoy the full experience. Before she even swallowed, she said, "It's delicious."

Yumi could not help but laugh when Nabi stopped herself mid-sentence. "No, no! I get it," she said, her eyes alight with mischief. "Men with muscles are way hotter. If a man can't lift you up and throw you around, what good is he?" [break][break]

She'd grown up surrounded by power in all its forms: wealth, influence, violence. Her bodyguards had all been chosen for their physical prowess, lack of morality, and loyalty. What ordinary man could possibly satisfy her? None. [break][break]

How strange, then, that the person who came to mind first was not one from her childhood. Yumi faltered ever so slightly at the mental image of nikkari hect's face. She was quick to dispel it with a shake of her head. [break][break]

Turning her attention back to their meal, she finally revealed the reason for choosing that restaurant. [break][break]

"I'm looking to expand my business. The casino pulls in a lot of revenue, but Sootopolis is only one city," Yumi said to Nabi. "The chef here is world-famous, and I'm satisfied that his food lives up to his reputation." [break][break]

She took a sip of water before continuing, "After our meal, I'm going to offer him a job working for me."

Nabi hummed in understanding, this time taking a moment to herself to chew her food and swallow before speaking again. "He'll say yes if he knows what's good for him," the pinkette said teasingly. She dove into her food with her spoon for another hearty bite.[break][break]

Then she began to think. Small, rusty cogs turned ever-so-slightly with curiosity. After a sip of water, she spoke, "Sootopolis is an interesting place to have a casino." Aside from its remote location, there was a larger reason why one might avoid starting their business there.[break][break]

"You're not worried about anything... happening?" She wondered if Team Rocket's presence held any influence on Yumi's business or even Yumi herself. "Everyone in Sootopolis must be a gambling addict," Nabi then said, as if trying to change the subject away from the Rocket organization. It almost felt taboo of her to speak about them.

"Sootopolis is a big city, and even with Team Rocket's sway over the local government, plenty of people still live there," Yumi said smoothly, steering the conversation toward a favorable light. Her smile mixed benevolence and mystery. [break][break]

"And often, the best way to make a society's troubles feel more manageable is through games and entertainment. Gambling." [break][break]

She took another bite of her food and another sip of her own water before continuing, her indigo gaze meeting Nabi's. "I've never had any problems with Team Rocket myself, but I keep out of their way and so, I suppose, they keep out of mine." [break][break]

Yumi paused for a beat, then admitted, "Of course, there are always risks involved. That's why expansion is important. Never hedge all your bets on one thing."
