Yumi's explanation made perfect sense to the naive and inexperienced Nabi. And the more she thought about it, the more she realized how easy it was for Team Rocket to live among the everyday-life person. After all, her family had long planted their roots in a town where the civilians knew nothing of their connections.[break][break]

How many others were members of Team Rocket, unbeknownst to her?[break][break]

Nabi cleared her throat. "I have a confession." Her announcement came so suddenly, even for her. It was as if a monkey pestered away at her back, egging her on to spill the beans she had so-long kept to herself. Even now, her family ties seemed to weigh down on her.[break][break]

Seconds passed with Nabi saying nothing, but her lips hung parted waiting to speak. "Um," she finally expressed, clearly nervous in her shaky tone. "You know, I admire you. Like, a lot." Nabi lowered her eyes and stared at the corphish shell on her plate.[break][break]

"Um, I ran away from my family. They've, uh, they've always worked for... Team Rocket. I was expected to do the same. Whatever, I guess. Team Rocket is bad, right? But I didn't leave because of that." Her shoulders slumped. "I just felt like they never cared about me and what I wanted to do. I was just always doing what they wanted me to do. So I left to live my own life."[break][break]

"It's why I really respect you, cause you're your own person. You're really successful, and you don't seem afraid of others. I want to be like you."[break][break]

With her emotional spiel over, practically spilled like a glass of milk and splayed across the tablecloth, the flustered Nabi began to shove food into her mouth without regard for manners. "Sorry! I didn't mean to dump that on you!" she said through mouthfuls.

A slender eyebrow raised at the sudden turn of conversation, but it smoothed out into an expression of understanding at Nabi's tale. Smiling softly, Yumi reached across the table to pat the other woman's wrist. [break][break]

"I appreciate you sharing this with me, Nabi. To be honest, my family has ties with Team Rocket, too. I grew up exposed to that life. So, we're more alike than you think," she said, attempting to be reassuring in her own way. "And because of that, I have no doubt you'll be able to succeed fearlessly, too." [break][break]

Withdrawing her hand, Yumi sat straighter in her chair and hailed a waiter. [break][break]

"Please give the chef our compliments," she told the woman who stepped up to their table, "as well as a request to speak with him in private." [break][break]

After the waiter departed to deliver her message, Yumi glanced over at Nabi. Triumph sparkled in her eyes. "I'll pay and then we'll have our chat with him, hmm?"

Yumi's small gesture sparked Nabi's veins to life. In the midst of distracting herself with face-stuffing, Nabi now sat with full cheeks and a peck of rice at her bottom lip.[break][break]

"We're the same...?" She chewed over the words slowly, thinking, before swallowing it down with her stuffed cheeks. It remained difficult for her to believe she could be the woman Yumi proudly lived as, and suddenly, this woman of power she so admired seemed all the more alluring and mysterious.[break][break]

Nabi stole one last drink of her water to wash down the food and her thoughts. Today was a reminder she knew little of who Yumi actually was, but this nugget of information only pulled Nabi in even more. Yumi, she surmised, was a righteous woman for leaving her family and Team Rocket. Nabi had certainly made the right choice to work for her.[break][break]

She said nothing beyond a nod to Yumi at the end. After having poured her heart out, it seemed fitting to reserve herself now. And besides, in business situations like this, she felt much more comfortable being the lackey, something more than a mere trophy to display at one's side and less than an equal standing on even ground.
