Today, he was in Rustboro. Why one may ask. To take on his third gym, of course. To see if he had what it took to get his third gym badge.

Reaching the gym, he would dismount from Mirage and head into the gym, with the spectral fox following closely behind him. Upon entering, he would look around with curious eyes, seeing if there were any differences he could see between Josh Devlin’s gym and Hideo Kino’s gym right away.

His attention would be grabbed by someone telling him to wait until his gym challenge was ready, causing him to simply not. Though he figured he was supposed to get seated while he waited, he wasn’t really in the mood, so he would remain standing.[break] CIAN MAHER

It seemed like he had barely had the time to take in his first sight of the Rustboro gym when he was ushered out of the waiting room and into the battling area. With curious eyes, he took in what the arena looked like before Cian’s voice grabbed his attention.

"Yeah, I figured it was about time. I made good on that promise,” he said upon hearing the older males comment about them having explored Area Zero together.

It had taken him awhile, but here he was.

At the question, he had to pause to think.

He would be lying if he said he was surprised by the question. As studious as he was, he would've, of course, studied up on the gym. So, of course, he would know the gym focused on weather. Still, it wasn’t something he had thought too much about.

“I would have to say sunny,” he said at last.

Well, it was sunny with some clouds, but that wasn’t really a weather that could be done, so...

He wasn’t really sure why he said it the way he did. However, any thoughts of asking were pushed to the back of his mind as he brought out a Torkoal its Drought ability, immediately causing intense sunlight to pour into the gym.

Heeding his trainer's command, the Hisuian Zoroark would immediately vanish as he used Shadow Sneak against the fire type. This move would, of course, allow him to close the distance between himself and the Torkoal without putting himself in harm's way.[break] CIAN MAHER

all too familiar with SHADOW SNEAK as that's what most people in team rocket prefer using, cian knows to expect the zoroark to close the distance within seconds.[break][break]

he's surprised torkoal understands that comment as it's rather vague but with the pouring of FLAMETHROWER, the shadows begin to disappear, removed by a bright torrent of flames.

If he was surprised about the tactic the gym leader deployed, he didn’t show it. “Mirage power through the flames,” he called, knowing the spectral fox would be able to hear him. In response to his trainer's order, he would resurface a bit away from where Torkoal was using Flamethrower, immediately sending a SHADOW BALL attack towards the flames in the hopes of pushing through them and hitting Torkoal before he had time to stop the attack or counter.

Absalom, for his part, was thinking through strategies he could use while the battle commenced. He knew the ins and outs of Mirage's, so that was good. It would be the Pokémon he used after Mirage was knocked out that would be the problem. Though he knew Mirage wouldn’t be down too easily, it was best to be prepared for anything.[break] CIAN MAHER

it's only natural for those preferring to fight in the shadows to then be cautious about engaging in close combat, so cian knows to watch for the zoroark to reappear at a distance.[break][break]

guided by its trainer, torkoal's head swivels to the right just avoid the SHADOW BALL. in return, the FLAMETHROWER turns to pour out at the zoroark, empowered by the DROUGHT above.
