Death Crater was gone. Blown to smithereens by a merciless volley of ERUPTIONS and PRECIPICE BLADES. Even so, there were plenty of unexplored ruins, caverns, and sites of importance that were too dangerous for the average trainer to consider going to. Not all of them were in Hoenn, either. One in particular Shalin had her eyes on:

TALONFLAME'S TOWER in the Ultra Crater.

A spire that stretched from the bottom of the crater to the heavens, navigating its innards would be a treacherous ordeal, full of Ultra Beasts and other formidable Pokémon. She could only think of one partner with the hardiness of a Rhyperior: Cillian Quinn . Having invited her daring adventuring partner to her sanctuary at Petalburg Plateau, she had plans to help them both prepare themselves and their Pokémon for the harrowing journey.

Wearing her SYGNA SUIT, she took a seat on the end of Saria's extended vine, the synced pair both glowing a faint green. That emerald discharge of Infinity Energy spiked to a bright flare as the Venusaur lashed with her VINE WHIPS. Half of Shalin's whoop was drowned out by the sound of a whip crack that would have been almost impossible for Cillian Quinn to miss.

His experience with the CRATER is sparse. Aside from a brief foray with Hitoshi Inoue, Yumi Hasegawa, and Tempest Quinn, his knowledge of the place comes from Rocket's reports.[break][break]

So when texts between himself and Shalin Nariya suggest a tower, Cillian longs for the climb.[break][break]

For now, though, they need to hash out the details. That was easier to do in person, so 'Finn' finds himself at Shalin's Petalburg ranch. It's the first time he's seen it. The vast plateau is magnificent to behold.[break][break]

But he's not here for sight-seeing.[break][break]

That said, who could miss the sight of Shalin whipping around on the Venusaur's vine? It looks as though she'd surely break her neck at such speeds, but he suspects the glow of the SYGNA SUIT protects her just as his own shielded him from the extreme pressure and temperatures of the deep.[break][break]

His voice carries easily as he lifts a hand to shield his eyes from the sun.

Indeed, Shalin's SYGNA SUIT was designed to protect her from extreme motion. "Oh yeah!" the wild explorer cried back during a brief lull in the action. Saria would assure that lull didn't last long, fully extending her vine with a vigorous twist of her body. The resulting pulse that raced down her vine was gigantic, giving Cillian Quinn a front-row seat to seeing Shalin be yanked and twirled 0about on a POWER WHIP moving at full speed. Their green glow was rather bright at the moment the deafening crack sounded, a sign of just how large the Infinity Energy spike was.

Saria twirled her vine vertically, the whip and its passenger whistling through the air for the duration of the physics-defying ride. She looked utterly delirious when Saria brought her vine to rest, letting Shalin dismount it at her leisure. Even with a Sygna Suit, such a ride had clearly taken a toll on her!

He had one, of course, but it was associated with Cillian Quinn and he couldn't take the risk that Shalin knew enough from news reports and wanted posters to be suspicious.

Shalin grinned when the reckless Finn asked for a turn. "She's got two vines! You're more than welcome to hop on the other one! The twirling part you should be okay for, but the lashing part you have to have a Sygna Suit to withstand. Without one, you could get seriously hurt." The hulking Venusaur extended her other vine toward Cillian Quinn to give him a turn if he so desired.

Once she was feeling better, Shalin slid off the vine, stumbling but catching hold before she fell completely. "The sky really is the limit with Sygna Suits, if your Pokémon's desires match your own," she added as Queen Zing and Sandy, a Shiny Beedrill and Flygon geared to ferry her about Hoenn, buzzed overhead. "That Flygon's the other Pokémon my suit's synced with."

Its colours were different, but he's seen that happen before.[break][break]

Shalin was slightly disappointed, but did not express it at all. It was completely reasonable; the power of Infinity Energy and their perfected bond was the only thing keeping Shalin's neck from snapping in two when the Venusaur's vine lashed. It wasn't the whip's velocity alone that necessitated her Sygna Suit. With a strong enough core, anyone light enough could sit on one of Saria's whirling Vine Whips. It was the flicking motion they made from changing direction that necessitated a Sygna Suit.

"Yep, Sandy's the same Flygon as from when we went to Mount Chimney!" Shalin confirmed. "We've known each other for a really long time, and are inseparable." The dragon-type briefly chirped with her wings, a whirlwind of air surrounding her from how fast they fluttered.

Out of all the people that had seen Shalin's Sygna Suit before, Finn was the first to ask that question. "Finn, you won't believe this, but I decided on Venusaur and Flygon to be able to do... exactly what I just showed you," she laughed, this time aloud. "I find their wings in motion just... mesmerizing to look at. Now, imagine seeing their wings still with the rest of the world being nothing but swirling colors. That's what it's like."

He dips his head in the Flygon's direction with a slight smile, then returns his attention to Shalin as she answers his question. He's not surprised in the least.[break][break]

It had been a different sort of thought that had went into his own decisions, but thought nevertheless. But that was Cillian, Rocket underboss, and not sweet old Finn.[break][break]

"I believe it," he says with a soft laugh. "Sounds like a hell of a trip." But as amusing as it was, they were here for another reason. He rolls his shoulders back and curls long fingers around a pokeball. "Shall we?"

It was a trip, that much was for certain. It was one she wished she could share. Alas, even the mighty Sygna Suits had their limits. Some used theirs for war. Some used theirs for rescues. Shalin, though, just wanted to have fun.

But now was not that time. Finn and Shalin had serious work to do to get ready for their next expedition. "Right. Don't underestimate Sandy! She's one strong fighter, and not in the ways you would expect!" As if on cue, the Flygon churned her wings so fast she sounded like an alto at the microphone. What a unique and majestic species!

Cillian's SYGNA SUIT was meant for practicality. He found nothing fun in diving the depths of the ocean, in spite of Lugia's numerous attempts to make him feel at home in her sacred spaces. But it helped him survive, and for that he was grateful.[break][break]

Out of the water, however, he'd choose his powers any day. Today, right here, he could rely on neither.

"Don't underestimate my partners just cause they don't have Sygna sync! They're plenty strong, too!"

And most of them would draw immediate suspicion with their shadowy auras, so he sends out his tried-and-true Lucario, instead.

Before Shalin could acknowledge that she remembered the Lucario from their expedition to Death Crater, which was now impossible to return to thanks to the eruption of Mount Chimney, Faolan was already on top of the Flygon in one of the fastest Pokémon attacks known to man. By the time she could start fluttering her wings to dislodge the steel-type, the two were already deadlocked, trying to shove one another to the ground. Though her Flygon specialized in vibration, typically a bug-type perk, there was more than one form of energy that her wings could produce.

Lowering her arms to the ground, the synced trainer formed a GROUND ZONE around the dragon. Rolling onto her side, she began to furiously vibrate the one wing not in contact with the ground. What would normally be a half-strength EARTH POWER was substantially augmented in strength, thanks to the duo's perfected bond. "You better believe it!" Shalin replied with a smirk.

Cillian whistles sharp in warning, and Faolan flicks his large ears in acknowledgement. Alert to the environment, the jackal DETECTS a subtle tremor in the earth, giving him barely enough time to leap clear of the GROUND ZONE that Shalin erects.

"Clever," Cillian acknowledges, nodding.

He's forced to cover his ears against the loud rumbling, lest they start to ring. It's nowhere near as bad as the chaotic battlefields of Kanto had been, but one could never be too careful.

Forced onto the back foot, the Lucario paces around his opponent, sharp eyes studying Sandy's movements.

If Sandy was good at one thing, it was jamming verbal communication with her wings. The Flygon's vibrations were so loud and powerful that anyone nearby could feel the air disturbance they created. The vigor behind the attack meant that the dragon-type had to let her wings rest for a bit, which was the one drawback the sonic attacks had. As powerful and wide as they were, the action needed to produce the noise put the user under a great deal of stress.

"Thanks, Finn!" Shalin chirped when the noise calmed down enough to be heard. With her wings recovering, less experienced trainers may have thought the Flygon to be relatively defenseless. That was not the case; Sandy lunged toward Faolan, quickly closing into claw range. She would attempt to grab the steel-type and SUPERPOWER him into the ground.

Cillian backs further away from the fight to save his ears from the noise. Faolan is not so lucky, his large ears twitching in irritation, but he doesn't back from from the fight.[break][break]

He COPIES the Flygon's technique, instead, executing a SUPERPOWER of his own to clash with the dragon head on. It's boosted by his typing, and he growls defiantly in spite of his own pain.[break][break]

The Rocket underboss fidgets, wishing he could reveal his own Sygna Suit and get in on the action. But that would give too much away to someone who might become his enemy.[break][break]

"Seems they're more than ready."
