His conversation with THEO BECKETT was as revealing as it was frustrating. Both of them had been able to gleam a number of details from one another, but the most important, had come at a not-so subtle interrogation of a one Katherine Fairburne's wherabouts.

At first he considered it a sort of mind-game—a reminder of yet another powerhouse lost in the war with Team Rocket. But, after considerable thought, he couldn't shake the feeling it was something more.

"How are you holding up?" He asks lam logan, moving to a nearby window. A storm was brewing beneath a blanket of night, the earliest paddings of rain already tapping against their windows.

"Sorry to drag you into all of this."

This stakeout was based entirely on a theory. A string of information leaked ever so subtly that he knew someone as astute as Theo Beckett would no doubt pick up on it.

Days into this stakeout, he was growing less sure by the hour.

"It's only a matter of time," he reassures his friend, not entirely convinced himself. "Only a matter of time."

“I’m fine,” he replies easily, shoulders shrugging with nonchalance as his head rolls to the side to watch Greyson Connors briefly. “Are you alright?” This isn’t Lam’s stake out, though it was an easy yes when asked of him. Even if the mention of THEO BECKETT’s name sends a phantom ache down to the marrow of his left arm. Something that he hasn’t felt so keenly since the cast came off last winter.[break][break]
He shakes his head, dismissive. “All good, I’m happy to help.” A rueful grin tugs at his mouth though as he tosses a look back over his shoulder. “Might have to convince my fiancé, though. He’s less thrilled.” Rook was far less keen about Lam putting himself in harm’s way, though understood that he was trying to strike some sort of balance.[break][break]
But his partner kept him grounded, and determined to not get too far in over his head. And for that, Lam was grateful.[break][break]
Though that didn’t mean he’d completely shirk a request for help from a friend, either.[break][break]
Lam only somewhat followed Greyson’s line of thinking—naturally, he hadn’t been there himself, so he wouldn’t know well enough to be so convinced. The Elite Four was unwavering, though, and that didn’t seem to change no matter how much time dragged on.[break][break]
At least, not initially.[break][break]
Scratching behind the ear of his shinx, who is settled comfortably in his lap in a folded up cat loaf, he frowns. “You’re sure it would be here?” He might have already asked as much. “Not Ever Grande?”

Mention of lam logan's fiance has Greyson's gut clenching beneath a wave of guilt.

"Yeah, sorry about that. Don't ever feel bad about saying no to these types of things. They're a bit outside the typical call to duty."

Impatience settles in what little space guilt leaves and it's painted clear on his face.

Could he have been mistaken? The possibility was there, certainly, but he also thought he had a measure of THEO BECKETT.

"We laid just enough of a trail to indicate it was this facility and—" he gave Lam his most confident expression yet "—He's not dumb enough to think he could break into Ever Grande. Even with all of their Avatars it'd still be a drawn out fight."

“Don’t worry, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think it was important to be.” He’s definitely learned how to fine tune the way he measures himself out, how much time he gives over to the league and to who.[break][break]
He hasn’t forgotten the exhaustion and agitation set into Greyson Connors’s shoulders as they worked in the Great Chasm, and he can’t quite put his thumb on why, but sticking close by when he can feels not exactly dire, but meaningful all the same.[break][break]
“Besides, Rook’s a good anchor. He keeps me grounded.” Otherwise, Lam probably would overextend himself out of obligation way too often.[break][break]
Lam studies him idly, and notes the antsy edge that settles itself on his shoulders. The irritable eagerness to get it on with, or maybe he just wants to prove he was right in his line of thinking? Not that Lam necessarily doubts the veracity of his claim that they’d show up, but well, they hadn’t yet.[break][break]
A slow nod follows. “Right… Theo’s smarter than that, you’re right.” It’s a bit offhanded, the way he refers to the man. Because, of course, he’d known Theo at one point. They’d been friends? Sort of? As much as running buddies could be. But idiocy had never been something he took the underboss for.[break][break]
“So with that in mind, I guess I’m wondering if they’re trying to play a longer con. They expect us to be waiting, so they’re…outwaiting?” Lam scratches the back of his head, grimacing. He’s good at strategy on the pitch–jury’s out just about anywhere else.

He wasn't ignorant to the grooves being slowly worn into the floor beneath his impatient steps. Months ago he'd have come into this more confident than ever. Now? Doubt plagues his every step—literal or otherwise.

"I don't think he knows this is a trap. He couldn't." But Theo was one of Rocket's powers that did not need to rely on the powers of a God. He'd been his own standing on merit alone, part of which, was his cold, calculating personality. "But I'd be lying if I said I was entirely sure."

Too often he'd underestimated his enemies and was forced to pay the price. He couldn't let that happen here. Not when more than just his own life was at stake.

"We could find ourselves out numbered and against Avatars. If that's the case, I want you to get away from here and call for support."

[attr="class","text"] There had been a change in Greyson Connors over the last several months. Not too noticeable at first, but the more Lam was around him, the more stressors began to show themselves in small ways. He’s different from the Elite Four member who came and found Lam on the beach outside of his gym. Just to talk about AQUA, and things like potential.[break][break]
Maybe they’re both different now in their own ways, but there’s some weathering now that makes itself apparent. It’s there in the constant pacing and restlessness.[break][break]
“Just speculating, really,” Lam replied with a slight shrug. “Sometimes it all just seems like a big chess match. I guess I just wanted to have an idea of the what ifs.” Not that over-speculation did him many favors. If he got fixated on it, he’d worry himself into a fit of panic.[break][break]
And then he’d be useless.[break][break]
“Well, if they’re not anticipating our presence, hopefully they won’t have that much man power.” He frowned. Keyword being hopefully. Lam shifted in place, and the shinx on his lap mrrped in annoyance.[break][break]
“I don’t like the idea of doing that and leaving you alone,” he said after a moment, “What good will that do?”

"It especially feels like that with Theo." He says, nodding. "Not being an Avatar and still standing as equals to two is enough for me to not underestimate him. Still, I can't help but think there's something I'm missing."

Paranoia wasn't something he was intimately used too, but his mind had a tendency to go to the worst possible scenario, especially when his nerves drank up his anxiety so greedily.

With a single hand he waves away Lam's last statement.

"It strikes a solid blow to Rocket," he says, lips forming a thin line. "The League is gutted right now and a win like that will be a huge. Besides, think I'm that easily killable?"

He finally forces himself to stop his patrol, lifting himself up to sit on a desk. His leg still shakes and as deep in his thoughts as he was, Greyson doesn't notice.

"Anyone will do but with MATIAS SILPH out of comission, the next best bets are Navy or Melody Miro. Hell, I'd take FERNANDO SILPH or freya morningstar, too. I need you to do that, okay? Can you?"

What did that possibly leave? It didn’t seem like Greyson had left out anything at all.[break][break]
“Well, no, but—“ Lam fell silent, lips pressing together in a thin line. With how easily his concern was brushed off, any other argument would likely meet the same end. Still, a short, dry laugh followed. “Plenty of options.” Though it begged the question—why was it just them here, then?[break][break]
Couldn’t he just call someone without having to actually leave the scene entirely? Wouldn’t that make more sense? But he seemed resolute in his insistence.[break][break]
A hand dragged through his hair as he let out a short sigh. For a moment he considered protesting again, mouth opening and then shutting. And then he nodded, “Yeah, okay. Yeah,” though he was clearly still displeased with it. “I can do that.”[break][break]
The magical leaf rests in his pocket too—a reminder that he has his own backup to call upon. Lam plucked it free and held it up in front of his face. “There's this too.”[break][break]
There’s hesitation in his voice though, clear as can be.

"I'm probably just needlessly worried." That had to be it.

Lam's reaction is as expected—he knew his plan wouldn't hold up to scrutiny but that wasnt the point.

Ensuring no other casualty came as a result of his plans, especially Lam, was.

"Thanks." A token gesture considering he wasn't entirely confident Lam would actually follow through.

His eyes fall on the leaf.

"Is that to summon Virizion?

“Sure, yeah. Of course.” He shrugs again, though maybe a little less earnest than before. If only because the idea of abandoning Greyson to any potential, uneven odds still grates on him.[break][break]
He nodded, twisting the leaf by the stem between his fingers. “Yep, sure is.”[break][break]
There were reservations that came with the idea of doing so, though. Hesitation in the idea of being capable of really measuring up to whatever idea of a Sword of Justice was supposed to be.[break][break]
But, if it was needed, he’d do what he could.[break][break]
“Kinda weird, but I somehow always seem to have it.”

Though it’s traded out for a different, complicated feeling that bubbles up whenever the topic shifts toward Virizion and how he even found himself tied to them.[break][break]
“Yeah, it’s kinda unreal. The fact that it’s even opted to give me the ability.” He pocketed the magical leaf again. He hummed, scratching the back of his hair as his expression pinched up. “Well enough, I guess. I don’t really call on Virizion too often.” Though it would probably benefit him.[break][break]
The idea of being a nuisance or a bother to a pokemon is laughable, and yet— “I guess I just-“[break][break]
He paused, frowning. “Hey,” standing, he carefully recalled the shinx to the safety of his ball. “ Do you feel that?”[break][break]
A tremor through the room that began to intensify little by little in its rumbling. Everything in the space began to tremble around them as Lam cast a wary look Greyson’s way.

a shake of the ground was sudden and it doesn't take a moment after for the cracks underneath the tiles to propagate from a single point. like lam logan's connection with the sword of justice, the rapture from the ground was sudden and seemingly unexpected.

"-like, you know i've worked with these people before. it's goin' to be so awkward when-"

he had visited various league facilities as an attendant to various scientists before. mossdeep had been one of the cities where he had been frequenting for errands, and irony brings him to return as part of another.

priam pops his head out, his gabite hopping out of the hole first. eyes swivel to spot two people ready to intercept their arrival as if surprise had not been an option in the first place.
