Technically this was an office, and not a home. But it feels the same as standing awkwardly outside of a residence, uninvited - for the second time that month.[break][break]
It's not that he wants to earn some kind of reputation for showing up unannounced, it's more that he doesn't trust certain people to actually agree to meet if he asks. Biases run rampant through the League, made worse by the fact that Rocket is, as expected, incapable of going a few days without instigating some new conflict.[break][break]
For every fresh defector, there are twenty crimes. Caleb's fighting an uphill battle.[break][break]
But masochism seems to flow through his veins, an integral ingredient in the recipe of his spirit, bitter-sweet and so very stubborn. So he's here, at her office.[break][break]

He could be here for a variety of reasons: they're both Rangers, for one. Disaster looms on the horizon, it's an "every-man-and-woman-on-deck" sort of time to be alive. But he can tell that she can tell that he's not here about work, or the League, or even Hoenn.[break][break]

And because he's too much the man she thinks he is (irredeemable), but not quite the man she hates (heartless), he supplicates himself before her by giving the briefest of explanations.[break][break]

He hooks her, and it doesn't feel great. This isn't how he wants to build trust between them: by dangling the wellbeing of her - Boyfriend? Ex-boyfriend? Close friend? - in front of her, the worst kind of emotional bait. But it's all he has, so he swallows his pride and seizes the opening she's given him, however thin.[break][break]
"He tried to kill a Rocket in Area Zero, like a month or so ago - you know, when we were all down there investigating," Caleb explains, leaning his shoulder into the doorframe. If she decides to slam the door in his face, it's going to hurt. "Almost strangled her to death in cold blood. I stopped him." He pauses. "Because he would have regretted it."[break][break]
He says that last part with certainty. Greyson might be many things, but a killer isn't one of them.[break][break]
"He was unhinged, Annalise. I had to go find him after, make sure he was okay." Another pause. A sucking in of breath. "He wasn't."[break][break]
An awkward silence hangs between them, then.[break][break]
"Can I come in?"

Her will is a fortress, impenetrable. She does not let him pass, as ironclad against his entry as she was the moment he knocked on her door. He relents, taking a small step backwards, a small victory in her favor.[break][break]
"Like a mental breakdown," he answers, groping for the right words. "Panic attacks, increased aggression, paranoia. He's having some kind of, I don't know, identity crisis?"[break][break]
He falls silent, eyes blue with misery. A sense of dejected futility overcomes him. Why did he come here? This is obviously pointless.[break][break]
"You hate me too much to believe me, don't you," he murmurs. It's not a question. "Because you can't fathom a Rocket defector caring about somebody this much." He sighs. "Ask ollie morales, if you must. He can vouch for me."

The realization hits him hard, and he mentally staggers. There is a hurt underlining every word she speaks. And her eyes? They betray a sense of loss - no, grief. He knows it. He's experienced it. And is there also a hint of guilt? He thinks he sees it in the way she shakes her head, as if trying to ward away a specific memory.[break][break]
The whole thing reeks of heartbreak.[break][break]
"You're not together anymore," he gives voice to her reality.[break][break]
Puzzle pieces fall neatly into place. Greyson's instability isn't her fault, but she likely contributed to it - indirectly. Whatever happened between them - even if it was amicable - would have affected him emotionally, exacerbating underlying doubts and insecurities. Caleb is keenly aware of how much breakups suck, mutual or not.[break][break]
"I'm sorry," he says to her, meaning it.

She says it doesn't matter, when it so obviously does...but he's not one to pick apart the ways in which people deal with loss. Arceus knows, he's had his low points. There are too many black voids where memories should be: all those nights, before he'd joined the Rangers, when he'd relied on drugs and alcohol to ward away Kanto's nightmares.[break][break]

Now, he accepts, it really is time to go. Not because she wants him gone, but because there really isn't anything else she can do. Contrary to what she might assume, he does not want to hurt her. He can see, so clearly, that she's suffered enough.[break][break]
