He opts to turn away from it, fumbling in his drawers for paperwork he'd put off for another time, their distraction now all he craves.

Then her demand cuts the strings of his arm like a marionette. The muscles of his fist contract and strain, wrapping around the old brass handle of his desk drawer, jaw clenching until the scraping of his teeth are like firecrackers in his ears.

His voice is even, low, and fails to hide the mounting fury that boils in his gut.

"I want you to get the hell out of my office. I'm hardly the only member of the Elite Four you have access to, now am I? Go bark up that tree."

"I'm thinking of how we can distribute the Elite Four, which is now effectively just myself and Navidson, across the region for better coverage."

It rises.

"I'm thinking of how to combat Avatars that outclass me in every single conceivable way, but know that if I leave them to run loose, people will die."

His voice is echoes throughout the office. It's infused with a longstanding fury that hints at more than what Annalise and Matias could offer.

"The last thing on my end—that I want on my mind—is the fact that my ex-girlfriend, who tossed me aside like I was garbage, is fucking the guy that not only assaulted her, but mocked me for it shortly before trying to impale me."

Scars still line his forearms where Matias had sent shrapnel into him.

"But I'm sure, somehow or someway, you two will turn me into the villain in all of this."

Or so he’d thought. Until just the other day. Physical pain he could numb. The emotional kind? He could only mourn what he’d lost.

Her confession nearly rocks him from his feet—the rising anger from moments before lifting him from his chair impassionedly without him consciously realizing it.

Anger, grief, joy—they tangle one another up like a bundle of snakes in the dark pits of his stomach.

Silence settles on his lips, snuffing the heat that lingers. It permeates even as he returns to his seat, expression soft, contemplative.

Finally he says:

“I don’t love you Annalise.”

His mourning grows heavier.

[break][break]but when did he stop? the day he saw her at MATIAS SILPH's house? sometime far earlier, when she stopped being the annalise that he chased after in the first place? the confession poisons her hindsight and her thoughts race as she takes a step away from his desk. [break][break]beneath the overhead light, her anger almost betrays itself for hurt. she turns toward the door, trying to hide the way her face crumples. everything she's done for him, brushed aside so callously. she hadn't said she loved him to try and resurrect something dead — she just wanted him to know she still cared.[break][break]and he doesn't. doesn't love her. doesn't care. doesn't want her to even be in the same room as him.
