it had been mostly quiet that evening, save for the hum of the submarine, a few machines, and the near-silent footsteps of a chemist working late in one of the rooms.[break][break]

lulu had been in her office with the door shut, scrolling through new curios and reviewing notes on the outcomes of rks simulations. nearly every time, two outcomes, except for the incident on a spaceship with nisa holo, that had resulted in Naomi Sato ’s avatarship.[break][break]

real connections can be made in the simulated universe, but many effects are not sustained by us. are some beings more real than others? is it all real in some way?[break][break]

the lights suddenly cut out, and her pen dropped to the desk and shen irritated sighed. ”if it’s the rats again, they’re going out the hatch.”[break][break]

a houndoom rose sleepily from the floor, and together they left the head scientist’s office with a flashlight beaming from down the hall, toward the more open space of the labs.[break][break]

[attr="class","mark-inner"]Mark’s fingers flew over the keyboard, the rhythmic clatter echoing like the scurrying of nocturnal creatures. In many ways, he was akin to them, a night owl adept at navigating the digital world in search of rewards. Tonight, however, his prize was far more significant than a mere block of cheese.

The concept of creating simulated worlds had long intrigued Mark, and now, driven by his new resources, he was determined to unravel the secrets of the Seal Stone. Normally, Mark's approach to research was often lazy, but this task had ignited a rare flame of determination within him, propelling his efforts forward, however incrementally.

"What do you think, M?" Mark asked, his voice a subtle whisper that barely disturbed the stillness of the room. The porygon-z hovering beside him responded with a soft static hum, its disjointed limbs twitching in sync with Mark's fingers on the keyboard. Seated on the floor, Mark's lap was a tangle of wires connected to his laptop, which in turn linked to a multitude of machines scattered throughout the submarine’s makeshift lab.

her houndoom sniffed the floor in search, but it was useless. ghosts were notoriously difficult to track.[break][break]

meanwhile, the rotom culprit abandoned the breaker as its investigators turned the hall, slipping into the room mark worked in, and possessing one of the machines – perhaps causing some interruption or alert as an unrecognized device. it blinked at him from across the room.[break][break]

noticing the glow of someone working in the dead of night, the head scientist took a detour from her mission, soon appearing in the doorway.[break][break]

”ah, another noctowl.” she could appreciate the work ethic, granted work was what he was doing, and not stealing while no one was around. ”there was a power outage, but looks like it was only partial.”[break][break]

the beam of her flashlight trailed his intriguing setup and the mess of wires, and as it reached the machines, the rotom had disappeared just in time.[break][break]

Although he considered himself loyal to Team Rocket, he still found himself going far beyond the bounds established for him. Despite being a grunt, he had spent most of his early days prying and playing with the elaborate data structure that Team Rocket called security. Tonight, it was all about diving into every bit of research on the Seal Stone and what exactly it was capable of.

He took a pause from his work to examine the woman with her flashlight and the hound that accompanied her. Although he didn't know her very well, he recognized her from his previous searches. The head scientist would provide a valuable asset to his overall goal of reverse engineering the RKS and bringing it to life in his own way.

"What can you tell me about the Seal Stone?" He asks ambitiously, offering her a seat without offering a chair. His porygon-z hovers beside him, its limbs twisting with the same curiosity Mark has for his visitor.

despite her own suspicion, lulu granted a vague explanation of her own. “it is a crucial ingredient in our latest technology – but i imagine that you’re aware of that already.”[break][break]

there was a pause, as she considered continuing. there was little for him to gain from what was known, and if he was a mole, he’d already made it very far.[break][break]

“the truth is we don’t know how it works, or even what it is exactly. but it seems to contain data from the far reaches of time itself.” her own theory went unshared, concealed as the information they’d attempted to hide from prying fingers like his.[break][break]

Yet, the possibilities hinted at in the Seal Stone’s documentation piqued his curiosity. It was a relic capable of extraordinary feats, and Mark was confident his skills could help unlock its secrets.

His porygon-z tilted its head, struggling to decipher the dense text sprawling across Mark’s screen. Mark chuckled softly, pausing to let his companion catch up.

"I want to reverse engineer it," Mark said, his voice tinged with curiosity, as if the very words added weight to the already hushed atmosphere of the submarine.

They hadn’t been formally introduced, and while she knew nothing about him, he had already dug through every piece of unprotected or public data available on her. His mind had raced too far ahead to bother with small talk, but once he recognized the oversight, he shifted his focus to his superior.

"Missingno," he said with a smirk, relaxing as he continued. "I'm sure you've heard of me. A few years back, I pulled off a breach on Silph Co.’s servers. Leaked some pretty important stuff." His grin widened as he recalled exposing some of the company's most private files to the public, including a few personal photos of high-ranking employees.

Even though he knew more than enough about her, he waited patiently for her to respond and introduce herself before turning back to his work on the laptop.

rocket knew that prior to moving onto other work for them, she’d started as a hacker with an interest in porygon-z. the rest, such as her true identity and all of her time before hoenn, was well hidden.[break][break]

“missingno,” she repeated with some recognition. a shadowy smirk curled about his breach of FERNANDO SILPH ’s servers, for any struggle of his was a joy to hear about. “impressive.”[break][break]

she watched him a few moments more before speaking again, ”being entirely straightforward, exactly what ‘things’ are you fucking around with in our systems currently?” things involving the seal stone, she guessed, but it was safer to be sure.[break][break]

In a place like this, it worked more often than not. This was how he navigated the system, following Cunningham’s law down to his very name.

"You could say that," he replied, casually clicking through schematics on his screen. "And I believe I can pull it off."

Despite his outward confidence, Mark kept his eyes locked on the screen, avoiding the woman beside him. His mind raced, carefully weighing his next move. He needed to figure out exactly how much he wanted her to know, and more importantly, how much she already knew. One wrong step, and his ability to gather intel could be compromised. Opting for caution, he chose a more subtle approach.

"I know the Seal Stone can create simulated universes," Mark said, finally clarifying his interest. "I’d like to help build one."

On the surface, it might have seemed odd for someone so entrenched in the digital world to be drawn to something like this, but that was exactly the point. Mark was used to creating worlds through code, shaping them line by line. The Seal Stone, however, offered possibilities far beyond anything technology could achieve. That’s what fascinated him.
