[break][break] In the crowd of collected grunts, Rocket's admin jayden cross appeared. His white hair is blinding in the sunlight, looking out of place for once — he was much more at home on the tundra, where Jayden had seen Grigori last. At least, unless you were counting their meeting in the dream-like world of the penitentiary.

[break][break] "Have you been screening my calls?"

[break][break] "You weren't at baking club."

[break][break] Rather than annoyed, he seems bemused.

[break][break] Was that a joke from the historically stoic admin?

[break][break] It was impossible to tell.

[break][break] His head tilts, glancing between Zev Harcourt and mint frost.

[break][break] "Who will you be choosing today?"

[break][break] The admin's eyes fall onto the latter for a few more seconds than usual, indicating that perhaps he has a more vested in the newly-minted avatar than their God General.

“Mr. Cross.”

Strange to see Jayden here, of all people. Being a major part of the training schedule should’ve left him well out of the fray. Especially since he was already so capable in combat. The fact that he was here meant that today would be a rigorous one. That, or he wanted to watch up close and personal.

Unfortunately, he had found the perfect man to shadow. Grigori kept his eyes from glazing over as he called him out for the missed meeting. “Apologies, Mr. Cross. It was my full intention to participate. I had the dates mixed up. It will not happen again.”

Not a lie. It’d been marked a week after the fact in his personal calendar. Even if the avatar was amused, the grunt wasn’t. He did not like to miss such important dates, even if they involved some of the worst people possible.

“I am personally picking Mr. Frost,” Grigori nodded. For very much personal reasons. If Jayden was interested, it’d be in his file as the most recent mark against him. “So it would seem we will be working together.”

“Do whatever you think is best, Mr. Cross.”

The Beast's digital expression reflects "^_^" back at you from behind his gear, which startles you. You hadn't realized that his disguise was so well-formed. [break][break]

"You know," he says. "If you want a suit like mine, you can just go ask Admin Delaney." [break][break]

fern delaney is renowned for their expertise in forgery and counterfeiting. With the impending war, it would be wise to have such security measures for your identity. Perhaps that’s something you'll pursue later. But for now... [break][break]

"How do you feel about working with your hands?" the Beast asks your group, as he decides to organize you into even smaller groups. [break][break]

"If I have to work with Ja—I mean, Admin Cross, I'd rather not," someone speaks up behind you. You recognize the voice as Victoria Beckett's. Isn't that Underboss Beckett's daughter, recently returned from Kanto? Or are those just rumors? [break][break]

If you skip weapons training with jayden cross, which looks intimidating enough, you'll have to engage in hand-to-hand combat with Beast Tempest Quinn. Watching him unleash his pit of canines against defenseless grunts makes you wonder if that's any better. [break][break]

That new suit is looking more and more appealing. [break][break]

Grigori Sokolov left the decision in the hands of the Offense Admin, and so they went. A nod of acknowledgement went to mint frost first, only to stiffen at the mention of fern delaney.

[break][break] Perhaps it was this, or perhaps it was nothing, but when the decision came to who they should like to train with, there was very little to decide.

[break][break] "I would like to train with Grigori myself," he said swiftly, something sharp and hard taking up the lines of his otherwise apathetic expression. "After all, it has been a while since I've seen him in action."

His muscles would be very sore tomorrow. “Then we fight.”

Jayden led the way further inside the facility. Down halls and corridors, each one more confusing than the last. Eventually, they arrived to their destination. A training room, with just enough space to make a circle around a small floor but not enough to feel fresh air.

Yet it wasn’t warm air, either. Despite the small crowd they gathered by merely having both an Avatar and a well-respected and known name like Grigori Sokolov. He heard fractured sentences being muttered, passed along like a classroom sticky note. From what he could tell they all said good things about him.

But it was Jayden Cross opposite of him. A grunt couldn’t hope to beat him. Grigori mentally agreed.

“How would you like to proceed, Mr. Cross?”

You have no idea what kind of trouble a random grunt like Victoria Beckett may have with the offense Admin, but you know you want no part of it. After all, with a war storming on the horizon, you know you'll have no choice but to sharpen your weapons skills. [break][break]

Inside one of the covert training facilities concealed within Sootopolis, you and several others are led into a training chamber. Stepping into the room, you immediately realize you may be out of your depth. The room is frighteningly frigid and a paralyzing sense of HATRED pierces your chest as the Rocket Admin stares at you. Behind him, racks of lethal weapons line the wall. [break][break]

"Weapons are dangerous but necessary in war. You cannot always rely on your Pokémon or more skilled colleagues to protect you." [break][break]

"You must stand on your own." [break][break]

"Choose a weapon, then attack me." [break][break]

You glance at the wall. Closest to you, there is a sword and then a shield. Which do you choose?

There were many things he wanted to say to Grigori Sokolov, some of which would have been better left for an environment more peaceful than this. Perhaps one to initiate the same conversations that they'd held in that uneven dreamscape, back on that Megalopolan ship.

[break][break] For now, he had a duty to prepare Grigori Sokolov, as well as all those beneath him, for the days that were to come.

[break][break] So, naturally, Jayden chooses the other man as the first of many battles that he has planned for that day. After all, who better than to show the others a way to test their mettle than a veteran of Kanto?

[break][break] "I should not need to tell you," he said, as he gestures for two of his Gothitelle to bring forth carts of weaponry. There were lances, swords, and armored shields besides. "I will not be holding back."

[break][break] "Choose your weapon and fight me, Grigori."

[break][break] For his choice of weapon, Jayden chooses nothing but the skin and flesh. The freezing cold air that whips naturally around his ankles and elbows, as if guiding him like one of BARNABY FINCH's whips of darkness.

His weapon was not a choice of best fit, but one of practicality. If he did not choose the shield, then he would be trading blow for blow. Jayden was swift, dangerously so. He’d be lucky to find his mark more than a few spare times. Furthermore, a sword or spear could be knocked out of his hands. Taken from him

And he did not want to walk out with cuts or holes in his body. Thus, when the carts settled, so too did Grigori with a shield. Its front was steel, chilled from the A/C that furiously pumped cool air in. But the strap and grip were leather. At least he would not have to contend with frostbite.

“I expect nothing less from a man of your position, Mr. Cross,” Grigori agreed. Their enemy would not, so why should Jayden? A hard reality, but free from actual consequences, was the best place to see the truth of such a fact. “Likewise, if it matters any.”

It would likely not. They were not men of an equal realm, unfortunately. Before Jayden’s ascension to avatarship? Very likely. Now?

Never. He took the shield and held it in front of his torso. It was easy to strap to his arm, to better ensure a grip. His eyes peered from above its rim carefully, cautiously. How best to approach this?

He approaches slowly at first. Distance closed and he kept his guard up. But as he reached the halfway point, his position changed. With a wide stance, he rushed forward with surprising speed for such an old grunt. The shield whipped one way, while his free arm went the other.

He tried to slam them together against Jayden’s skull, a single attack to render the man defenseless. To make his skull and brain clatter around.

You've heard the rumors from Admin Fox. Being chased through Sootopolis seems like a nightmare and the thought of meeting a similar fate is downright chilling. [break][break]

It's better to go on defense, you think. At least then, you can protect yourself. [break][break]

Irritation flashes in the admin's eyes at your cautious strategy. Without hesitation, he charges across the field, wasting no time in an attempt to overwhelm you. [break][break]

"FOOLISH COWARD!" he snaps. "Do you think you will survive by being weak? By merely defending?" [break][break]

His sword clashes fiercely against your shield, the impact shattering it instantly. Worse yet, an icy frost forms around the metal, causing it to splinter apart. The sudden cold grips your hands, shoving you backward as the cursed touch freezes you into place. [break][break]

Sudden HATRED surges through you, immobilizing you into place as the Admin yields. His ruinous sword vanishes into a glimmer of light. [break][break]

"Don't let your fear turn your into a coward." His eyes glimmer the color of winter's frost as he catches sight of something behind you. Turning around, you see that Admin fern delaney is there to take you to your next session. [break][break]

"The world is full of weaklings. Don't let yourself become one of them."

A formidable effort from the elder Grunt. A logical one, which was to be expected for someone with as much experience as Grigori Sokolov.

[break][break] Yet, even the most meticulous logic and planning cannot outmatch the strength of passion.

[break][break] Icy winds whip around the Grunt immediately, slowing the momentum of his movement as he lashes out suddenly, aiming to bash the Admin's head in. But winter makes the body slower than one can even imagine, and there is not enough time or effort or experience to fight against the rage of HATRED that suddenly floods through the room.
