It should’ve been laced.

It should not have been pure.

And yet, that was exactly what it was.

A concoction of differing toxins and poisons, in doses yet unprecedented even by herself. But she gulps it down like a parched wanderer lost in the desert. The flasks empty far too easily.

And with every drop the sting digs deeper into her being. It claws at her insides, tightening her throat until her breaths become labored and heavy. Her mind feels hazy, cloudy at times.

Nothing another shot doesn’t remedy, she learns.

How much had she ingested before the clarity hit her, she wondered?

The world seemed brighter. Slower too. Winding her way through the hallways, she had started running. Whatever happened after had been a blur, but she feels powerful and giddy. Tireless. Even now, as Calliope takes in the late Sootopolis air, she feels more alive than ever. Unnoticed remain the bloodied knuckles, the amount of crimson painting her hands betraying it’s not hers alone.

[break][break] he hears of her transgressions from a fellow grunt, a panicked report made into a crackled phone line. he could have sent someone else to deal with the damage. he knew that mint frost or bryan delarosa would've dealt the punishment as swiftly and justly as he would.

Cold hands chase away whatever warmth she’d beaten into her fingers. The heartbeat in her battered knuckles stutters at his freezing touch.

She stared at them for a moment, and then at the extension of arms and body that hadn’t been there a moment ago. The sensation had been there ages before she could see it.

A voice plays in monotone in the back of her mind, barely audible, thus her mind searches for something tangible as it continues to decipher the words.

For a moment, Dmitri stares back at her, and she tenses almost instinctively.

[break][break]
The disappointment in pale-blue eyes prompts her into anger, for fear at her tormentor’s presence was unacceptable. Yanking her hands away from Jayden’s, Calliope moves back several paces and glares at him.

What he sees more akin to a defiant pup growling back after it’s been chastised.

[break][break]
”Or what? You’ll make me?” Calliope snaps back, the cautiousness in her posture lingering a moment longer before she realizes it’s not Dmitri.

Not that jayden cross was any better in her opinion. He was his father's son, in her eyes guilty by design, and therefore equally deserving of her hatred. No matter what she did, she just couldn't escape that family, the chain that tethered her to Rocket in the vilest of ways.

Her gaze hardens in unspoken response when her body relaxes. The only difference between them is that he doesn't instill a primal fear in her the way his father does.

Maybe that's why she dares disobey.

"yes," his voice was swift as it was cruel. falling down upon them like a blade. "i will. don't doubt me, alvara."

[break][break] his eyes glimmered furiously once more, frosted crystal gems that were hateful enough to cut through whatever poison remained from dmitri's lasting influence.

[break][break] but the pause that it takes her to recognize that he is not dmitri, just the devil man's son, is the same time that it takes for jayden to reel back his emotions, just as THEO BECKETT had taught him to do. the burning sensation of the underboss' punishment is a lingering reminder, just as jayden's mere presence is just as cruel of one to a person like Calliope Alvara.

[break][break] "i know you're an addict," he said, his voice softer now. his eyes just a shade less blue, as he steps towards her, the pointed sharpness of a needle in his palm as he offers her a cure. "but even you have your limits."

"I wouldn't make that mistake twice." Had the fear not kept her body in a vice, she would have spat the words, and perhaps more, back into his face. Her voice can only seethe, laced with that unmistakable tremble.

"I know you're an addict,"

"Oh, how kind of you to notice!" Sarcasm takes form now it settles in properly that the monster plaguing her nightmares is not with her right now. The tremble does not leave, but she denies to acknowledge it as she glares at the icey blues holding her in place. His voice awfully kind... deceitfully so.

She notices the needle his hand and recoils, the railing keeping her from going far as she does. Her eyes fall towards the syringe, and her rage seems to flare once more when he mentions her limits.

"My limits are my own, Cross. Your father seemed to have little regard for it anyways, so why should I trust you to?" The words are said with a bite, but she attempts to keep them in check as she nods at the needle tucked away in his palm. It's obvious she feels like a cornered animal, ready to strike if the situation -or her mind- so demands.
