There were a number of different things here, in the armory; vehicles, equipment, and weaponry alike. Makoto was a bit familiar with the vehicles thanks to a prior spontaneous driver's lesson with howard slayte - albeit they weren't exactly interested in trying to go on another ride on their own.

Or, well, they supposed 'on their own' was a bit of a misnomer here. "Well... Where do you want to start?"

Either way though, the equipment and weaponry was a lot more interesting to them, even if they didn't exactly want to think about how a lot of these weapons weren't around for self-defense. It was better than risking potentially crashing a car into something vital.

Reinforced cases and steel shelving units contain weapons of various types: small arms, explosives, knives and other bladed tools. Adjacent to the armory is an open range used for the practice and maintenance of these weapons. [break][break]

There's a wide array of things here; Makoto almost doesn't know where to start in it all. But, they soon decide to settle on looking over some combat knives, the most approachable of the weapons, as silly as that sounds. They pull one out, looking it over - and then glance to Mark.

Given that he didn't look much a fighter, and neither were they exactly interested in trying either... "... Let's clean these; some of them are looking a bit worn." They eventually suggest to Mark. Be it from actual combat or repeated use in training, some of the weapons here probably could use a touch-up...

[attr="class","mark-inner"]Mark felt a sudden but subtle burst of excitement at the request, quickly dampened by the realization of what it meant. He was only excited because no combat meant he could relax a bit, but cleaning knives was still labor. It was miles away from his true interests, yet it was clear that this training was designed to push them out of their comfort zones, to prepare them for real combat situations.

Accepting his relief, Mark decided he didn't mind cleaning knives.

"Do you normally fight with these?" he asked, as he removed a knife from one of the containers. Despite his preference for digital work, field operations intrigued him. He knew he needed to understand them in case he ever found himself in the thick of things.

Makoto blinks a bit, as Mark poses the question to them. "I've... Never used something like this myself." They responded - technically truthful, even if only a half-truth - continuing "But probably only if you're... Forced into close quarters, or can't use a gun or pokemon." These looked like they'd be easy to draw at the drop of a hat, but you wouldn't want to bring a knife to a gunfight or even a pokemon fight. Not unless you had a safe avenue to get close and personal.

But, in any case, as Makoto worked and looked over each knife... They noticed that the blade was coming loose from the hilt from one; which seemed like a recipe for disaster. They blinked as they looked the blade over - but unable to figure out what was causing it exactly, they glanced to Mark. "This one's coming loose, not sure why... Think you can make better heads or tails of it?"

If he couldn't, perhaps the instructor could give a hand; though they felt a bit more comfortable talking to the fellow grunt and getting his second opinion first.

[attr="class","mark-inner"]Mark shared a similar sentiment about knives. To him, there was no reason to rely on a blade when pokemon were far more effective. His expertise in the digital realm made him believe modern wars were more likely to be fought behind computer screens than on the battlefield. He couldn't picture himself in a situation where he'd need a knife.

"Sure," he responded, returning the knife in his hand to one of the containers.

He picked up the other knife by its tip, holding it in front of his face. His fingertips shook the blade slightly, revealing a loose handle. Mark twisted the knife around, noticing a missing pin from its hilt, the likely cause of the looseness.

"Looks like it's one of the pins," he said, stating the obvious as he examined the blade.

Mark wasn't a master at knife repair, but he'd seen enough videos online to have a general idea of how to fix it. However, the concept was still new to him, and he had no interest in pursuing it further.

"Let's let the instructor deal with it," he concluded, placing the knife back down.

Yeah; Makoto wasn't going to be able to replace a missing pin, either. It was likely that the instructor might have some replacement parts somewhere, so they were content to let them handle that. Thus, they'd nod, setting it aside for later as they continued to go through the different weapons.

As the work continued though, Makoto would exhale a bit. "Thanks for tagging along." They commented, giving Mark a brief little smile. Bit by bit, they were growing more comfortable with other people in general. "Probably would've taken all night to get through the knives here, on my own."

Company, even quiet company, did well to make the time pass.

Even though cleaning knives was a tedious task, Mark meant what he said. He appreciated finding someone who shared similar views and interests. Mark wasn’t typically one to make friends without clear benefits, but he felt fortunate to meet a grunt he could relate to. It brought a bit of peace to the otherwise overwhelming training of Project Tower.

Though he’d never directly admit it, Mark would feel lucky to work alongside Makoto again, especially in the field.
