The sea is hungry for blood, intolerant of the unworthy.[break][break]
Turbulent waves crash against Lyra's shell, but the Lapras is undeterred. She has weathered many storms, and she does not fear the angry god of the deep. Rain pelts down from the heavens, soaking Caleb and the Bagon that rides atop his shoulder, clinging to him with sharp claws and an even sharper spirit.[break][break]
He grits his teeth against the cutting wind, eyes fixed on the horizon, intent on spotting their destination: a place difficult to find even in the best of weather. Now? Near impossible.[break][break]
But he is not alone.[break][break]
"Do you see anything?" He calls out to Roy Aker, loud enough for his voice to carry over the roar of the storm. "We're nearing the coordinates where the island was last seen."[break][break]
My cousin, she'd called him. Caleb had met him once before, by random chance. Sometimes it seemed to Caleb like he was merely a cog in destiny's wheel.[break][break]
All he can do is hope it will turn in his favor.

While Lyra played the vessel, Triton, Roy's Kingdra, took on the role of navigator. As Caleb called out to Roy through the storm, Roy struggled to keep himself latched onto shell, doing his best to keep a keen eye on his dragon-type pokemon leading the charge. He used one hand to grip one of the spikes and his feet to maintain his position, while his other arm attempted to shield his eyes from the rain.

Suddenly, Roy saw his Kingdra return from its forward position. Triton swam close to the edge of Lapras, signaling to the draconid that something of importance had been found. Roy shifted his gaze from his pokemon to the horizon, spotting an island far off in the distance.

"Over there," he called out, releasing his shield to point towards their destination.

Caleb squints, wipes rainwater from his eyes. At first, he doesn't see a thing - it's all blurry waves and dense clouds.[break][break]
But then he spots it: a rocky peak, a dark stain against the backdrop of muted greys.[break][break]
"That's it," he replies, unable to keep the excitement from his tone. Mavli growls, echoing his enthusiasm. Lyra lowers her head, and picks up the pace. Together, they power through the onslaught of stormy seas, until finally - blessedly - they make contact with land.[break][break]
Caleb heaves himself off the shell of his Lapras, and finds purchase on slippery stone. "Watch your step," he cautions Roy, though he has a feeling the other man will be just fine. He seems to have the same heartiness Freya has, giving off an air of enduring resilience.[break][break]
When they're both safely on foot, he returns Lyra to her Pokeball. His legs burn as he crests the cliffside; at the top, there is a stark expanse of bleak beach ringed in more mountains. It reminds him of the various, forgotten islands he'd passed on his way from Kanto to Hoenn, too small and insignificant for names even though they would outlast all who had the privilege of viewing them.[break][break]
"Allright, I guess we should...start looking."

Roy followed Caleb as he hauled himself off Lapras' shell, his muscles protesting the toll the journey had taken on his arms and legs. The slippery cliffside greeted them with the sea's relentless tide forcing Roy to cling tightly to the wall. Unlike Caleb, who recalled his pokemon, Roy left his kingdra to guard the area, planning to retrieve it only when it was time to leave.

Once they scaled the short wall, Roy immediately switched to the role he was there for. Caleb expressed his readiness to start, but Roy was already in motion. He crouched, knees bent, examining the ground for any signs or indicators. Roy’s tracking skills were well-honed, though this island presented a unique challenge. He had never encountered anything quite like it.

Using his thumb and index finger, he collected a small sample of the ground, rubbing it between his fingertips. The dirt crumbled into fine sand, confirming his suspicions of the unknown. Rising to his feet, Roy summoned Balmung from the ball on his belt.

"Give us some eyes in the sky," Roy ordered. The charizard growled in response and took to the sky, beginning to scan the island's surface.

"Where did you learn about this island?" Roy asked Caleb.

Caleb watches with awed appreciation as Roy goes to work.[break][break]
It is with a clinical confidence that the Draconid lowers himself to the earth, his connection to the whims of time's effects on any given natural environment aiding him in his assessment of the island's geography - and whether or not what they are looking for can be found here. Caleb wonders, vaguely, where Roy learned to track like this. Perhaps it is a skill he learned from family.[break][break]
Or from dragons.[break][break]
An impressive Charizard manifests, leaping into the sky without much pretense. Caleb watches him become an orange speck amongst the grey storm clouds.[break][break]
"From your cousin," Caleb answers truthfully. "I train with her on a weekly basis. I asked her where Latios and Latias were last seen. Figured if anyone would know that sort of thing, it would be her."[break][break]
He gazes at Roy, expression curious. The dark-haired young man doesn't look a whole lot like Freya, physically, but they carry the same...underlying ferocity, he thinks. As if something feral lives within, clawing for release.[break][break]
Mavli growls, cocking her head at Roy. He has her brother, Caleb remembers. Can she sense that?

"She would be the one," Roy joked, glancing up at the thick clouds. Caleb's words held a certain weight, and Roy couldn’t help but feel a bit more respect for him. If Caleb was telling the truth, Roy was surprised by the man's ability to go toe-to-toe with his cousin.

As they chatted, Balmung made a swift pass over the island, surveying everything the dense canopy and heavy clouds would allow. After a few quick circuits, the charizard returned, landing a few feet away with a running stop, its speed causing it to skid slightly. Shaking its head, Balmung relayed all the information Roy needed without a word.

"Looks like we're going to have to walk," Roy remarked, noting that both he and Balmung had come up empty in their search. Just as they were about to move forward, one of the ball on Roy’s belt ignited, releasing a small dragon with an oversized helmet. The creature resembled Mavli, but was smaller in stature, though its attitude was far larger. It bickered and snarled at its sibling from the ground, clearly eager to make its presence known.

Mavli reacts immediately, scrambling down from Caleb's shoulder with little regard for his exposed skin. He winces as her claws pinch, but he's soon distracted from the pain by the way she faces off against her brother. The two Bagon glare intently at one another, snarling and snapping, but it doesn't seem to be...aggressive, so much as...competitive? He's reminded of his own attempts to one-up Zev in their youth. Back when things had been...simpler.[break][break]
"What's his name?" Caleb asks, mouth quirking up into an amused grin. Mavli might be bigger, but her brother isn't intimidated - he's just as fierce, if not more so. "This one's Mavli."[break][break]
Roy will know what the word means, of course. If he's Draconic like Freya, he must also be fluent in their language.[break][break]
The rain ceases, and though the sky remains as grey and densely clouded as before, Caleb feels a sense of relief. If they're going to have to walk, it will be better to do so without dealing with a constant downpour. Easier to see, easier to move, easier to track.

"Jiah," Roy said bluntly. The tiny dragon mirrored his trainer’s tone with indifference, puffing out its chest and lifting its head in a proud display, as if trying to outshine its sibling. It cracked one eye open to sneak a glance at its counterpart but quickly shut it again, hoping the other wouldn’t notice.

Before the pair could discuss the two dragons further, Balmung signaled them to move on. Jiah darted recklessly between Roy’s legs as they walked, yet Roy managed to avoid tripping over the little wildcard with surprising ease. Their short trek brought them to a dense forest, its thick canopy likely the reason Balmung couldn’t get a clear view during his earlier scan of the island.

"Is there anything else I should know before we get any closer?" Roy asked his partner for the mission. Though much of his childhood was filled with stories of legendary pokemon, Roy wasn’t entirely sure of the specifics or Caleb's overall intentions.

Elusive? Or is it the verb, to elude? Either way, it carries weight, as Mavli's name does. He remembers the bite of the knife, her mouth stained crimson with his blood, the tightening of his chest as the soul-oath took hold. Roy must have done the same.[break][break]
Perhaps the only way to endure is to elude that which threatens: a balm to soothe their collective grieving, two halves of a whole.[break][break]
He opens his mouth to speak - (are we family now, too?) - but he is interrupted by Balmung's return.[break][break]
Jiah and Roy follow the Charizard's lead, the little Bagon weaving between his trainer's legs. Caleb treks after them, Mavli at his heels. She nudges his leg with her snout, as if to try her brother's trick, but Caleb shakes his head. "You want me to fall on my ass, do you?" He laughs. She huffs, raises her arms to be held. He deposits her onto his shoulder where she belongs.[break][break]
Roy's question is, on its surface, a simple one - but Caleb has to take a moment to gather his thoughts. There's plenty to know. Angelo was the best of us, he thinks. Irreplaceable. But that's not who they're looking for.[break][break]
"Latios saved my life once," he remarks. "He blessed his former Avatar with the power to...know when the people he cared about might be in danger." He pauses, remembering his escape from the Rocket prison. "So I guess, you know, that's evidence, perhaps. That Latios might still care about Hoenn's people, even though Angelo left."[break][break]
He gazes up at the swirling grey clouds above.[break][break]
"I didn't know Latias as well. My hope is that the two of them will be willing to aid the League in the coming war."
