ILLEANA IS ON THE FRONTLINES. Alongside MATIAS SILPH and other members of the League, she has been tasked with weakening a section of the Sootopolis crater that Kyogre charges toward. Before she can work, Rocket Boss declan walsh interrupts her. As the Head Scientist struggles to contend with her own breaking psyche, the Rocket Boss aims to kill her.[break][break]

However, another declan walsh seems to appear in the warfront. Is she fighting the real declan walsh—or is it all just a nightmare?

sootopolis... darkened with maroon skies and overhead flashes of an impending storm. with each crack of thunder, the air intensifies. lightning follows, idly bathing her in a split-second glow before fading back into darkness.

the approach is quick, despite rocket forces seeking to pincer the league operatives on the field. she squeaks by undetected, lurching in and out of rifts to get closer to the objective.

and tunnel vision has blinded her, though she wouldn't know it. not yet.

the equipped earpiece surges to life once a hand rises to tap it on. a buzzing cacophony follows before silence falls.

"reyes in position."

[break][break]

thunder rumbles overhead. the storm is closing in and with its turmoil comes certain doom. kyogre's presence is unnerving, even with its familiarity. her eyes still scan toward choppy surf, half expectant of teeth like knives and cycling water saws.

she finds nothing but paranoia in abyssal depths. the lack echoes against reality, hollow when she pulls it apart to find cobwebs and sun bleached bones.

when she turns for the wall, however, the sensation of another presence vibrates spatial matter until it's a bundle of whispers pulling her in one direction then the other. she's jostled and distracted, body lurching this direction then that. a glimpse of a face - is that declan walsh ? a ghost? another entity entirely? - in the periphery before it's gone, appearing again when she turns away.

flashes of lightning illuminate his face in slightly dizzying patterns. the rose-tinted blast gives shadows a full preview before it dies an early death somewhere behind him and the yellow eyes feel like dozens the longer they linger.

she swallows, parts her lips, and speaks low into the earpiece.

"walsh on me," she pauses, static filling in the space her voice has vacated for a moment. "engaging."

the comms go dead, then, and an eerie whisper of silence fans out slowly across the air.

as she stares across the precipice of no return, she tries to will herself to look past the monsters screaming out below. she fails - inevitably, as is her nature - and the subtle darting of eyes into the abyss marks the first of many bubbling mistakes.

"no," comes the quick reply. too quick, perhaps. she chalks it up to racing against invisible sands in an hourglass, struggling to not drown beneath the weight of time running out, but even that would add to the tally.

the earpiece bubbles back up, clinging to life, and annalise henderson 's voice comes rumbling through the audio.

"walsh is on me."

she blinks, almost owlishly, and doubt begins to sow its first seeds. they take root quickly, festering in spaces of the ribcage until each breath is filled with leafy vines and air feels like a luxury she cannot have.

can she trust her own vision? or is that, too, filled to the brim with maggots and worms eating away at her with each move? is he nothing more than another figment of the imagination, of paranoia manifesting into the physical plane? she releases her salamence from its pokeball with the rigid movement of her arm, eyes never straying out of fear that he'll evaporate if she looks away... that he, too, will dance just outside of her vision and his laughter will join the cacophony already bleeding out her ears.

her ear ignites with another round of static before annalise henderson 's voice rises up. it sounds panicked - is that her imagination? - and the full sentence doesn't escape before it cuts off with eerie silence.

she feels anxiety and fear continue to rise as seconds begin to tick into minutes. did she bear witness to a quick end? a painful capture? she grimaces as the familiar presence of mew comes into focus. it's nearby, darting to and from in the midst of all the chaos. a low-pitched whistle escapes from the alchemist, then, and she turns slightly as she feels mew's invisible tail brush just past her fingertips.

silence doesn't settle long.

"keep her safe."

the mew escapes, flying off toward annalise henderson as the rocket boss's gliscor swoops down toward her. in her distraction, she's left herself open...

the result is a hiss of pain, night slash blossoming across her neck. she stumbles forward, flashes of white dotting across vision, and her salamence snarls itself into a quick dragon tail to bat the gliscor away.

and as her hands rise in an attempt to cradle her neck, she tries to keep her eyes on him.

"you really think you can make a puppet of creation when you're attached to the same strings?"

[break][break]

the abyss roars and breaks against nearby crags. the resulting spray of sea water is a mild, fleeting relief. it mingles after a moment with subtle decay. spatial matter gives way as her pain manifests with waning control of small distortion waves.

a snarl breaks through before she's lunging toward him, all teeth and aggression and paranoia filling the lungs like drowning water.

but the boss does not return illeana's aggression. he waltzes backward. strafes to the side at the last possible moment while goading her with his shadow.[break][break]

"will i need to show mine?" the boss taunts. "are you capable enough to push me to such ends?"

and her body follows a similar momentum even as he moves, as his shadow lingers through possession on invisible strings. her boots slip over salty seaworn limestone revealed by receding tides and she stumbles, skidding forward. a quick pink blast escaping from an idle hand propels her back on the right path, but her ankles suffer from strain. they creak, groaning through dull pain.

somewhere between arrival and now, the fissures have been opened wider. like a spreading corruption, paranoia seeps through until she's a muddied mess of false prophets and phantoms screaming for justice to an event not yet exacted. the snarl doesn't quite leave her features. it seals itself into skin, branding her against the tipping point between gods and monsters.

she lunges to drag him down, to crash bone against rock and stone and the very edges of abyssal depths. her salamence follows suit in a feral, blind rage, its own draconic body bursting forward to meet the gliscor head on with dragon claw. woman and dragon, regardless of empyrean promises, find themselves on the precipice of no return. the tipping point falters and frays.

some call it enlightenment, this shift - a point at which to reach the heavens... but she has already burned them into her skin, with scarlet turning gilded, and now, she seeks absolution.

in the air, the gliscor locks up with the salamence. as their winged bodies trapeze through the storm, the bat's pincers glow putrid purples. poisons ooze from daggered hands to draconic claws in the hopes of impairing its foe.[break][break]

similarly, walsh allows illeana to drag him toward the ground. they land on the stone, his pale skin blending in with it.[break][break]

"how unseemly you are." the boss says, eerily calm. eerily still. "is dahlia aware that her head scientist is nothing but a brute?"

stone rushes up to greet them and for a moment, she feels victory within reach... however short-lived it may be.

he stays still as a statue, calmness rendering movement almost nonexistent. she stares down at him, body angled as if she means to pin him back down should he try to stand. she lacks the strength to hold him, realistically, but there's an art to creativity she has come to rely on in the span of recent months.

somewhere behind them, her salamence hisses and roars as poison begins the steady pursuit of felling the beast. it sways, the world spinning in and out of focus. in its poisoned struggle, a flamethrower escapes and sprays not only at the gliscor but at the downed trainers as the salamence begins to plummet toward stone.

despite herself and the concoction of emotion swirling beneath the seams, she lifts one hand away from stone to erect two shimmering barriers of rosy pink: one behind her and walsh with another trying, and failing, to stall the salamence's unconscious body in the air.

the shields bathe them both in lighter shades, illuminating that which wishes to stay hidden.

soft, barely above a whisper and almost drowned out by violent waves crashing against crags. her eyes look half focused, darting every so often to the ocean sprawled out beyond them... to what reckoning its depths hold.

she leans in, white hair forming a halo around their heads. her lips seek his ear, hovering just shy of grazing.

he doesn't take any bait she offers, no matter how hard she tries to entice. it's disappointing, perhaps, to realize the rocket boss is more domestic than a rabid dog...

she latches onto the faint tendrils of reaction, gorging herself on them until she's not sure if it's a phantom sensation to feed a starving body or actual reality.

and he speaks, each syllable searing a wolfish grin into her cheeks despite the fracturing of real and fantasy spreading wider with each passing second. the end result is a swirling mess of paranoid confidence shattered into a sentient weapon.

the whisper fans out across skin, nothing more than spidery lies trying to find shelter in his ear canal and tie his thoughts up into webby bundles.

behind them, her salamence falls to his gliscor and the shimmering shield breaks apart as gravity tugs the dragon down. its body drops unceremoniously against rock and stone, scales just barely holding on to prevent blood from splattering over.

and somewhere even further beyond, creation stirs in the expanses of space as if beckoned.

she sees them even now, small blinding spots dotted behind his head. some dying, some coming into existence, and all within arms reach.
