Somehow she has three badges. That fact surprises her. Not because Aubre thinks she’s completely incompetent but because she never planned to get any. But now the fire of competition had awakened inside of her.

And, after the penitentiary, the doctor was desperate for any semblance of control. So, after perusing the gyms, Aubre settled on this one. It also gave her an opportunity to extend an olive branch to her husband. One that didn’t involve awkward conversations and teenage fondling. Then, there’d been the few weeks she tried to play nurse.

They practiced intensely in the days leading up to the appointment. But all the preparation in the world wouldn’t quell her nerves. That morning she’d been sick. The very idea of breakfast had made her stomach roil.

Now, standing in front of the gym leader, Aubre was surprised at how calm she felt. All four Pokemon were willing participants. They’d watched all the published matches. In the stands, her mom and dad held a squirming toddler. Next to her—the scars on their arms a match—her husband stood. His suit was the opposite of practical.

But, considering he thought battling a stupid, useless endeavor, she did not intend to comment on it. Even if the tie didn’t fit the atmosphere and those shoes were about to get wrecked. “Are you tuxedo?” Her cheeks flushed as her own words echoed back. Aubre gave his hand a squeeze. She laughed. It’s warm if a bit trepidatious. “Ready?”

A ball arced through the air as her first Pokemon took to the field.

Somehow Leon was slightly more enthused than his wife, despite his enthusiasm being slight to begin with. Pokémon battles had never been more than a passing diversion for him, a rare necessity rather than something actively sought. Politics was for lawyers, it was no place for honest, hardworking criminals. As such Leon preferred the cold logic of numbers over the fires of battle.

Nevertheless, he was still a tad more competent than your average. This was due in no small part to the efficacy of his partners and the fluidity of their interactions. It was rare indeed that Leon had to give actual commands as they understood each other well enough to act of their own accord and still achieve the desired result. His analytical skills were an additional asset that somewhat helped mitigate the advantage his wife's spontaneous ingenuity provided.

He turned his head, studying his wife's profile as they waited. She was why he was here in the first place. Though he had little care for pokémon battling or the affairs of 'gym,s', they were a particular love of hers. The prospect of putting a smile on her face was all the impetus he needed to attend this sideshow, despite how little the actual event mattered to him.

When she turned he gave her a smile, squeezing her hand in turn. "I am afraid I left my mask at home. Mi diaspace, perhaps next time." He wanted to lean forward, capture her lips with his, but now was not the time. There was business to attend to.

Turning back to face the arena he was the picture of composure. Likewise, the EMpoleon and Bisharp standing behind him might well be taken for statues that had been hauled into the gym. None of the three moved as the pokéball arced through the air and burst into a spray of light. Instead six eyes locked on the person across from them, waiting for them to make the first move.

This might be the first time a married couple has challenged his gym.[break][break]

Not that he's opposed - it seems like a pretty interesting way to test that particular emotional bond, no? And truly, from a purely observant perspective, he's about to get a front row seat into how that dynamic plays out in action. Though it might not be inherently the same as his own dynamic with Ikarus Rook, they're on the cusp of a wedding. So yeah, Lam is a little curious and invested beyond the simple evaluation of seeing whether or not they can earn the badge.[break][break]

He watched their back and forth as they took to their side of the pitch, opposite of him. They were certainly a contrast in pair - but that wasn't something that surprised Lam all that much. In fact, if Rook were here, he wouldn't have been surprised if his own partner donned a similar getup to Leon's.[break][break]

"You guys ready to rumble?" he asks, a grin hanging lopsided at the corner of his mouth. Two pokeballs whiz through the air as Lam sets them loose. Yuzu shakes the poms at the end of his wings, the oricorio darting forward to take the front as his flygon lands solidly behind the far tinier bird.[break][break]

"You look like the picture of marital bliss!" It's all good humored, of course, as he takes in the sight of their joined hands. All part of the performance that their spectators have come to see. "Let's see if it shines through in your teamwork!"[break][break]

With a two-fingered salute, he gives them the charge to start.

This was a test. Not for herself nor for her Pokemon. This wasn't even about Lam. It was her husband in the hot seat.

Beneath the supposed wedded bliss were doubts. These weren’t foreign to Aubre. But recent events had brought them to the forefront. Like an infection highlighting the pain of an open wound. While she had begun to forgive him for his more serious crimes, feelings of being infantilized threatened. Though his behaviors at the prison had been knightly--even now he could not do much unassisted—they had come charged with second guesses.

Everything she’d tried to do had been taken from her. Like a toddler who’d been excited to master the kitchen. But Aubre knew she couldn’t trust her own brain. It conjured phantoms and not all of them were dog shaped. The doctor had also been under the influence of poison at the time. So, this battle was meant to highlight these issues. Or, at least, let her pass unbiased judgment.

Her clumsy tongue only highlighted her own fallibility. “Planning to take on the entire circuit with us? Make co-champion?” She stammers with a red cheek.

The gym leader’s easy manner made Aubre relax. She returned the smile. For a moment, there was a more innocent, useful touch to her smile. An open expression Leon would remember from younger years. “I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.” Which wasn’t completely true. But it sounded nice. Emerald eyes caught her husband’s as the two Pokemon hit the field. An interesting pairing. They cover each other’s weaknesses pretty well. Look how ruby that Flygon's scales are!

She figured this bird was built like her Oricorio. It was good at set-up and dodging, but its power options were limited. That didn’t mean she could write it off. Pokemon were all wildcards in their own rights. And Leon’s team was weak to it in two different ways. But without knowing what was in the wings, it was hard to pick one of the thousand plans racing through her mind.. Fortunately, there was a way to fix that.

“Al! You ready?” The lizard set his cellphone down. He nodded. Her Heliolisk stepped forward with a sneer at the mafioso next to him. Maybe he’d get a chance to ‘accidentally’ ruin that stupid suit. But he’d agreed to play nice, hadn’t he? The guy would probably screw up on his own.

Without waiting for Leon’s move, she lets out a series of quick whistles. With a blink, Alastor dashed forward to do what was told. His tail gleamed purple as he tried to read her mind. Carrottop had forgotten to give him a target. So, he did what made sense: attacked the Flygon. It was a dragon-type last he checked. And, sure, it’d get swapped out, but it was obviously the bigger threat. At least to him. He didn't think the stoic penguin needed protecting.

But another sharp whistle made him change course. She did that on purpose! You’re not meant to surprise your own team! At the last minute, the electric pivots to try and hit the Oricorio with a Dragon Tail.

Although he was aware of his wife's suspicions Leon did not understand them, in the least. She had made it known during their infernal internment upon the 'alien' craft, and he had been just as flummoxed then. That this was meant to be some sort of test he'd surmised, as her demeanor had been rather less than inviting since the idea emerged some weeks ago. At first he had agreed simply to make her happy, though now a note of frustration found him determined to lay this matter to rest; so long as it did not endanger their victory. He rather doubted she would be pleased with him throwing the battle to prove a point.

As to her question, he returned a charming smile. "Se quello è il tuo desiderio."

Only the most cursory attention was spared for the gym leader's eventual arrival. Though he did not like to be kept waiting, he was well aware that it was part of the spectacle and so complied, if begrudgingly. The flippancy was likewise endured rather than enjoyed, and despite himself he felt the corner of his mouth slip. He was reminded of his brother, if a half starved version. The frowned ticked up a bit at that. Perhaps this would be somewhat enjoyable.

His eyes locked onto the Oricorio and Flygon as soon as they hit the field, having the strangest sense of deja vu with the latter. It only took a few moments for him to analyze the feasibility of the forthcoming possibilities, and it seemed that Aetius arrived at the same conclusion simultaneously. As the lizard darted forth to the shrill whistles the Empoleon and his trainer both remained silent as the other steadily moved forward. The path paved he followed directly behind the lizard and his beak began to glow an icy white blue. It seemed that the two would be attacking in coordination, each focusing down a different foe. This was in fact the case, but not as it seemed. As a a last whistle redirected Alister, Aetius likewise swung around, firing the brilliant ice beam directly at the dragonfly.
