Nabi knew little about the man that guarded Yumi Hasegawa, more familiar with his personal scent than his interests and dislikes. There was little reason for her to get to know him in the first place, though she would be lying if she denied her sense of curiosity. Any man that stood close to Yumi raised eyebrows on Nabi. What was he to the woman she idolized? Clearly more than a mere bodyguard.[break][break]

"I want to know," Nabi thought to herself as she watched Hitoshi Inoue from across the casino, her gaze unwavering and intense. Work had brought her here today, but now that it was done, she found herself alone in Sootopolis and hesitant to venture through the island town known for hosting the renown criminal organization.[break][break]

Yet here presented an opportunity. Hitoshi was alone, too. Perhaps he was also finished with work. And in a sense, they were co-workers, were they not? It wouldn't be so odd for Nabi to make chit-chat with a co-worker.[break][break]

Before indecision could get the better of her, Nabi strolled past the slot machines and towards the man they called Black Dog. She immediately took in a whiff of his natural odor.[break][break]

"I never see you alone," she blurted to him, all the while sipping a colorful mocktail through a bendy straw. "So, how about you keep me company?"

All around them, people play at games. Nature runs its course, and those caught in their instincts do as they always do. Matters like the end of the world and impending war matter little to the creatures who flock here. Among them is a dog, watching over the flock, ensuring there is some level of order to this microcosm of life.[break][break]
His eyes gravitate to nabi park, another caught in Yumi Hasegawa’s orbit. Though they have hardly ever spoken, he sees in her eyes a similar admiration to his own. It puts him at ease, marks her as friend rather than foe. Only one who would harm their Amaterasu will ever be an enemy in this dog’s world.[break][break]
When she approaches him, his amber eyes light in surprise. He takes a drag on the cigarette in his mouth, its cherry burning bright while he breathes deep of its aromatic fumes. Tobacco’s odor hovers about him, though it seems more a mask for an iron scent beneath.[break][break]
“Hard t’find time t’be alone.” As he says the words, he realizes how they must sound. “Not that I’d mind company.” A curt nod out across the crowd, at all the people playing at normalcy. “Seems a weird time to gamble yer life savins away, if you ask me.”[break][break]
A beat, and he says something that would raise an eyebrow from those who know him well.[break][break]
“Yer Nabi, right?”

He was easier to talk to than she suspected. Nabi thought for a moment, straw remaining in her mouth despite the glass's now empty contents. "You know my name," she mused, slightly impressed. "And you're Hitoshi." Even though it was their first time speaking to each other, she remembered him making a memorable impression the first time she saw him with Yumi. Everything from his scent, to his fluffy hair and his short stature. But most importantly, the air of significance he held Yumi in.[break][break]

"Do you like to get into trouble?" she asked, watching for his reaction. "Not here, of course." The last time she had caused a ruckus in the casino, she had kicked the lights out of a well-known compatriot.[break][break]

She discarded her glass when a server carting a tray passed by them.[break][break]

"You must know the area well," she said, a whiff of his cigarette infiltrating her delicate nose. "Take me somewhere where we can get rough. Also, put that out. It's nasty." She referred to the stick hanging from his mouth, tempted to rip it out and snuff it herself.

She makes him smile, lips curving up along with the cigarette. Smoke floats up to heaven, just another reminder of how little regard humans have for the world around him. A small hand lined with callouses reaches up, plucks his cigarette out, and flicks it at a trash can meters away. Cigarettes are not aerodynamic, and ash flicks across the ground, but it lands where it was meant to go. It falls into the remains of a plastic cup, snuffing out the cherry before it can do harm.[break][break]
Damn, that’s a three-pointer. The dog thinks, putting a hand up to his earpierce.[break][break]
“This is Inoue. I’m out fer the day. Ring me up if there’s a ruckus.”[break][break]
With those words, the dog nods at Nabi and motions for her to follow. Straightening up his sword belt, he flicks a finger at a cloth that seems to move on its own will towards his exposed wrist. It stills, and falls, acting as if it is no more than decoration on an anachronistic blade.[break][break]
“Rough, huh?” He asks in an even voice as they are welcomed by cool air. The sun will soon sink beneath the basin, leaving them with stars and the promise of cover darkness brings. Not just yet. They have time before the street lights turn on and the wolves come out to play.[break][break]
“That the kinda guy you think I am?” There’s something playful in his words, a tone reserved for precious few. “I know a place. Hope ya don’t mind blood.”[break][break]
The armband he wears marks him as Agent Inoue, one of a very select group of individuals authorized to operate under Rocket’s SPECTRA program. When they pass others affiliated with the organization, they nod and give him a wide berth. When their eyes linger on the woman with him, a short click tells them it’s time to move on.[break][break]
He leads her to a garish place, built in defiance of the dark. Melody Miro’s gym has been converted into an arena. Men battle here for their own pleasure and the roar of the crowd. Bloodsports are too garish for his tastes, but she did ask.[break][break]
“You ain’t lookin’ to get yer hands dirty, are ya?”

"Great," Nabi remarked when Hitoshi leads her out the casino.[break][break]

Sootopolis came as unfamiliar territory to her, primarily by choice. She had little desire to explore a city overrun by Rocket grunts and personnel, as if their uniforms and desires would rub off on her. It was a strange way for her to think, as well as illogical.[break][break]

"I don't think you want to hear what I think of you" she replied, followed by a nod of approval for their destination.[break][break]

Nabi knew Hitoshi held some importance. After all, he was so close to Yumi. But as they walked the streets, she noted the number of people paying their respects to him.[break][break]

"No, actually," Nabi answered, looking the decrepit gym once over. "I don't like getting dirty." She shot him a smile. "Though I wouldn't mind seeing you throw around some men."[break][break]

The roars and cheers of an excited crowd could be heard behind the building's entrance. Nabi ushered Hitoshi to take them inside.[break][break]

"It's the perfect spot for a date, don't you think?" she joked just as she saw a man's head twist in response to another's punch.

Ever the obedient beast, the dog leads her inside past garish things and remnants of what was once beautiful. In their place lies man laid bare. Two mongrels affecting the appearance of men circle one another in the place where gym matches were once held. Each of them is confident. Each of them is ignorant. As the dog slips into his seat next to the butterfly, he looks upon both of the combatants with casual, cool, human disdain.[break][break]
Each of them looks for an opening. Their grins are the wide, sharp things of predators totally confident in their capacity to lay low the other. Neither’s mind processes that loss, much less the visceral loss awaiting all, is a possibility for them.[break][break]
“These guys ain’t worth the trouble of gettin’ my sword out.” His eyes steal a glance at the blade, which he sits beside his chair. It leans against the arm rest and a lone eye watches what comes with great interest. The eye widens with the assault of one attack hound upon another. A soft cloth laps at itself like a hungry thing caught in a cage, licking its lips at food just out of reach.[break][break]
“This a date?” He asks the butterfly in a neutral voice, followed by an admission no man or dog should make. “Never been on one.” With a dry smile, he presses on past the point.[break][break]
“When Yumi took guys out on dates n’ they went to see a show, all the violence was wrong.” Another barrage of punches. One animal is trumped by another. One climbs on top of the inevitable loser with a wild Liepard’s speed, reducing the other’s life and thoughts and hopes to so much ruddy ash. The dog sees recognition dawn like a red sun upon the bottom creature’s face.[break][break]
“Fake violence is better.” He says with animal wisdom he did not wish he had. His eyes find hers, finding what he sees there far more interesting than the end of a beast who did not know he was a man.

Nabi liked the idea of Yumi going on a date. She immediately pictured the beautiful woman clothed in something classy yet sexy at the same time. And of course, all of her dates were just as handsome and came with a sense of fashion.[break][break]

And then here was Nabi, paired with a mutt and his sword. She wasn't exactly date-material either though.[break][break]

"That's funny," she mused. "I've never been on one either. I wonder what that says about people like us." She met his eyes and made a wry smile. Unless one counted her "date" with CIAN MAHER the real thing. She didn't know any better.[break][break]

"Actually, this isn't a date," she then corrected herself. A bell sounded. The next match approached. "It just had a nice ring to it." Then, she chuckled. "Which means we're still dateless."[break][break]

"So, what's this about fake violence? What's that even supposed to mean? Like, wrestling?" She snorted and pointed to the still sword. "You do actually know how to use that thing, right?"

“It’s all wrong.” Says the dog with sudden consummate professionalism. The two beasts of the last match are replaced, one pulled off of the other before two permanently becomes one, only to be replaced by another pair no more interesting than the last. A finger finds its way to a vein on his neck. It brings blood to the brain like the main circuit of a board.[break][break]
“In the picture shows, it’s all flashy. I like flashy, but the best thing ya can do is nick ‘em here. It’s like cuttin’ a wire. No comin’ back. Quick. Quicker than the heart, easier than gettin’ to the brain stem if they know yer comin’.” He discusses his craft like it were any other profession. The dog’s tongue enunciates his point like someone else might talk about loading a printer.[break][break]
“Or ya get what those clowns are doin’.” He nods at the fight. First, showy. Then, brutal. By the time another bell rings, he can see in their eyes that the pair want nothing more than to kill one another.[break][break]
“Sloppy.” Another moment of humanity dawns in his eyes, something like embarrassment. “Not to uh, just bitch about work to ya. Surprised you ain’t been on a date.” She is, after all, a human, or at least a far more beautiful imitation of one. Butterflies draw the eye like dogs never will. “You like workin’ for Yumi, Nabi?”

Hitoshi's words painted an unwanted picture in Nabi's head, but she understood. Chills prickled across her spine, ironic and familiar. It was like she was having a conversation with her grandfather.[break][break]

"Funny," the pinkette said with a sigh. "I was going to ask you the same thing."[break][break]

The simple answer was: yes. In a way, Yumi had saved her. At a time when she was jobless and practically alone, Yumi had presented her with an opportunity. She wondered if that was the case for Hitoshi as well.[break][break]

"She's an incredible woman that I look up to. I'd still be homeless if it wasn't for her." Nabi paused. "Actually, I'm still homeless, but I can pay for food."[break][break]

"But you..." She narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. "There's more to you and Miss Yumi than just boss and worker, isn't there?" She stared him down, wanting answers.

“You ever hear ‘bout the red string of fate?” He speaks of such innocent things with far more warmth than when the subject is murder. Holding up his pinkie, the dog smiles, imagining that same string wrapped tightly about the digit.[break]
“They say every soul’s one end of that string, paired up with someone on the other end. Sometimes you can go yer whole life, lookin’ fer that person.” Everything fades before this subject. His hand moves to his scarf, the first gift anyone ever gave him, a gift from Yumi Hasegawa.[break]
“Nobody else’s ever just…accepted me. All of me. Nobody really liked me, growin’ up. Guess I was a bad kid. Violent.” He sups upon lies born of misremembered history, where his fangs bared in defense of another’s reputation were mistaken for fangs of malice or fangs of spite. “Yumi just…told me I did a good job.” And in so doing, earned herself the loyalty of one who would burn the very blood in his veins in her name.[break]
“My mama used to tell me our family was a samurai family back in the day. Guess…Yumi’s like my Daimyo. No…that ain’t it. Close, but…” [break]
He speaks in his native tongue, the language of Johto, that he might give such words the weight they’re due.[break]
“She is the one for whom my soul sings.”

Nabi listened with half-lidded eyes, silently judging Hitoshi for being much more sensitive than she could have guessed. But she was certainly intrigued by what he had to say. In the midst of the screaming, the blood, and the clashing of fists, he spilled his swollen heart.[break][break]

"Oh my god," Nabi said. She brought a hand to her cheek and shook her head. "You're, like, seriously in love with her."[break][break]

Admiration held nothing against love, and the way Hitoshi looked as he spoke of Yumi, as if she was far beyond his distance, yet so close in reach... his feelings were palpable. She could not relate to his deep, one-sided yearning.[break][break]

Nabi pursed her lips. "I'm pretty sure you can't have a red string of fate or whatever with someone if they don't feel the same way about you," she commented. Yumi had mentioned romance and boys before, but she never mentioned Hitoshi in that space. "Unless..." Her eyes widened. Both hands reached to grab Hitoshi by the shoulders firmly. "Are you secretly dating each other? Have you been lovers this whole time?"

“H-hey!” Far from some hardened killer, the dog looks like a blushing schoolboy. He pulls the scarf up around his cheeks and offers her a cutting look. Whatever deadly intimidation that look offers is undercut by his tone and clear embarrassment. [break]
“It, it ain’t like that!” Despite all their years together, despite the interest she held when they first met, Yumi’s dog never considered her that way. Love, romantic love, is a human act. [break]
“Nobody ever…” How to articulate it? He has pulled his vocabulary to its limits and beyond. “…appreciated me ‘fore I met her.” The dog is a broken thing, a man slayer. His love is expressed through violence, true violence, not this stuff they watch. [break]
“You ain’t wrong ‘bout me lovin’ her, but…I don’t think it’s like that.” [break]
The dog’s eyes soften into something quizzical. He rarely has occasion to speak to someone with one foot in the ordinary world. [break]
“You…really think ya can only share a red string with someone if yer fuckin’ ‘em?”

"That makes no sense," she immediately replied and pulled her hands away from Hitoshi. She noted how he used his scarf to hide the tint of red at his cheeks. "And, gross, I don't wanna picture..." She felt shivers up her spine and shook her head. "That's not how the red string bull crap works."[break][break]

She personally didn't believe in the melodramatics of love or some greater fate tying people together, but if she did, she was almost certain sharing a red thread with someone meant you were soulmates. She had watched enough TV dramas to know that soulmates could mean ups and downs, but it always meant the two ended up together.[break][break]

"So what, she's your first love because she acknowledged you? You know you can love other people, right?" She looked around, as if implying he could find his next romantic encounter here, and then quickly realized an underground fight scene was not the place to fall in love.[break][break]

A heavy sighed slipped past her lips, drowned out by the excessive cheering as a match came to an end. She realized it was incredibly strange to have such a deep, philosophical conversation with someone about relationships and love surrounded by violence. If she thought hard, maybe she could draw similarities between the two.[break][break]

"I swear, I've watched this on TV before," Nabi mused, arms now crossed at her chest. She leaned in to Hitoshi, brows furrowed together, and spoke lowly, "Do you know if Yumi was involved romantically with anyone else before?"

If nothing else, this butterfly’s exasperation draws a smile to his lips, hidden though they may be. It’s a defense mechanism, armor he clads himself in. Better to draw humor from how his crass tongue makes others react than be hurt by it, especially when language is so hard for dogs.[break]
“Somethin’ like that. My own folks didn’t have much use fer a violent kid like me. Everybody wants t’be accepted fer what they are.” Which Yumi gave him, along with her family. They recognized talent, allowed him the honor of guarding the cherished daughter of the family. It gave him a taste of true human living, something he never had on the half-forgotten streets of his childhood.[break]
“Huh? Ya mean…fore she met me? I’unno. Plenty after. As much as any other person her age. Boyfriends n’ girlfriends here n’ there. Bozo number one, Bozo number two…” Blinking, circuitry connects in his brain that should have lit up minutes ago. Leaning forward, he suddenly looks at her with judging severity.[break]
“You interested in her, Nabi?”
