He'd nearly forgotten to make time to visit the safari zone. With everything that had been going on, and the slow, but steady rise of tension before it all ramped up at once, Lam had barely had the time to really think about stepping away from his duties, and his gym, to enjoy this sort of walk through the gated terrain.[break][break]
Plus, when he was free, he was usually spending that time with Rook. Covetous for it, because it was like a warm hug, nice and safe from all of the bleaker things going on outside. It was easy to lose themselves for hours in the quainter aspects of wedding planning or hanging out - probably eating food and playing games together.[break][break]
It would have been nice if his life right then could've just been that. No looming conflicts on the horizon to take him away from it. He sighed and shook his head. There was no use worrying over it. He should just enjoy the time here while he could.[break][break]
Curious, he slipped the magical leaf from its now routine place in his pocket. It would be nice, he thought, if he could enjoy some casual time without battle, with the sword of justice.

For a moment, Lam waited. Idly, he observed a drifting dhelmise. The haunted anchor weaving its way through the trees at a distance. Lam let it be, turning to wander down the sun dappled path. The slightest ripple of wind ruffled his hair, followed by a swirl of leaves. And then Virizion was there, trotting through the undergrowth with their head held high. “Hello,” Lam said, head inclining politely. Suddenly, he felt awkward, uncertain of how to conduct himself. “Are you…well?” The sword looked at him, something like amusement sparked in their eyes.[break][break]
This was stupid, wasn’t it? There wasn’t even a reason he’d called them. Perhaps they’d find him silly for wanting to say hi.

“So…” Virizion observed him, their head tilting slightly. Wide eyes blinked at him. “What exactly is it that you…do?” He paused, scratching at the back of his head awkwardly. “Ah, I mean, when we’re not duking it out against some sort of major threat.” The Pokémon didn’t give him much by way of an answer. They simply turned and trod down the path that he’d started on. They passed by a floating qwilfish, its lilac scales bright against the water. Virizion paid it no mind—only looked back at him expectantly. Lam supposed he could do little else but follow.

As he followed Virizion, Lam watched them pause and then tense. His head tilted, curious as to whether or not there was a threat he didn't notice. All it turned out to be, though, was a gible that toddled out onto the path. Not terribly aggressive like its elder evolutions, it opened and closed its mouth in a harmless chomping gesture. Virizion regarded it distantly, and then trod onward.[break][break]

But while it fixated on the sword of justice, Lam tossed a safari ball at it. It would be a nice gesture of friendliness, he thought, for someone who was fond of dragons, and less fond of jirachi.

Stooping to pick up the safari ball, he realized that Virizion was still trotting onward. “Hey, wait up!” He scrambled, trailing after the great creature whose velvety fur matched the shade of his hair. So eager to match pace, he nearly crashed into them when they drew up short.[break][break]

A scyther blocked their way, bladed arms glinting. “Looks like sparring practice,” he remarked, somewhat teasing. But the coy look in Virizion’s eye told him they were entertaining it. “Alright, not a bad opponent really.” They launched forward, crossing blades with its x-scissor with the shine of a SACRED SWORD. Parrying blows until Virizion could get a good swing in. When the scyther staggered, Lam threw another ball.

Virizion came to a halt once the scyther was contained, seemingly pleased with the impromptu practice. Their elegant head drooped to graze. Nuzzling along the earth until their snout was stopped in its track by the sharp boop of a soft beak. A mischievous capsakid stared back at it.[break][break]

“Aw!” Lam interrupted before Virizion could take too much offense. He scooped the squirming culprit up. “I remember when Habanero was just a little guy like this,” he remarked, referring to the lumbering goof that was his scovillain. The sword’s head tilted, their indignant reaction beginning to fade as they watched Lam tickle under the capsakid’s chin.[break][break]

Perhaps not everything need be a fight, nor a crossing of blades, to achieve balance.

His gaze softened when it landed on the quaxly.[break][break]

What had started as the sword leading Lam around had become an observational study in reverse. Their head quirked as they watched him regard the small duck. The capsakid had been long tucked away into a ball, and they were almost done with the walk.[break][break]

There was something almost grieving in the way Lam looked at the derpy little bird. Probably because he was keenly remembering his own quaquaval. She’d been that small once, and a part of him still carried the guilt of her death.[break][break]

He couldn’t bring himself to catch it, not at first. What if he failed this one just the same?[break][break]

Virizion’s leaf blade was a gentle push of the quaxly toward him. A way to prompt introduction than an aggressive attack. They blinked at him, expectant. The quaxly also watched. lam looked at the sword and sighed, “Okay okay, I get it.” He reached out to ruffle the pompadour styled feathers on its head.[break][break]
