"Hm."

He inspected the Pinap between thumb and forefinger, its ridges ripe yet firm against the admin's blackened fingers. Red scars laced up and down the admin's hand as the berry danced in his palm. A half-blind eye narrowed in an attempt to visualize the fruit of Bryan's labor in his fingers.

"It feels right. Good, even." A deep breath followed, intaking the scents. It sounded like a paper bag expanding and contracting. His eye flicked to the vague silhouette of the former Lifebringer, who took up much of Howard's faltering gaze. Strong. Untouchable. Immortal.

"You did good, Bryan." He offered the Pinap back to the Rocket Beast in a shaky, extended palm. "You were the right choice in overseeing my little experiment with Oscar while I've been..."

Dying.

"Indisposed." The admin had passed indisposed when he had lost most of his body weight. "Thank you."

By contrast, the pinap fruit that had flourished with his help seemed to be a healthy size and color. A much better improvement compared to to the scarred hand that held it. "What happen?" he asks.

Silence, then words.

"Most of Dewford is gone." The words feel thick in his mouth. Awkward. Cumbersome. A confession of a crime that few in Rocket could dare replicate. "I buried it in ice and snow."

And he saved it from being buried forevermore. This was his punishment for sparing it from total destruction, as well as his punishment for betraying the town's head.

"You weren't the only person betrayed by a Pokémon of great power." His lips twisted in an imitation of a smile. "I must admit, it fucking sucks."

Regice had not deliberately betrayed him, but it made little difference now.

Originally, Howard had thought little of the golem. It had just been another artifact in a collection that no person could feasibly justify owning. It was a great masterwork of an era long gone, forgotten by the shifting sands of time. Yet that machine...

No, that Pokémon.

"I misunderstood the purity of its mission. Thousands of years in stasis, and it never faltered from protecting its ruin. Its mission was pure, and I threw it away in Dewford."

Even a discarded machine continued to fulfill its purpose.

"We misunderstood our bonds. I don't think I ever knew Regice. Did you even know Xerneas?" He grunted and tried to rise. "I'd kill for its healing right now, I won't lie."

"He lived for so long, saw so many things, could ANYONE really know Xerneas on a personal level? Probably only yvetal." he says "It's already hard enough to understand someone, humans, who've lived one life time, now imagine trying to understand thousands of them." he says as he doesn't exactly answer him. Xerneas was a confusing creature but he knew that he cared for Bryan. Allegedly that's why it removed his blessing from him, to save him "The healing comes at a cost, no you don't. That pain you're feeling is a lesson."

"A lesson?" Rage bubbled forward and turned into scorn. The Executioner's lesson was forgotten in the favor for the Lifebringer's. His eye twitched as a monitor beeped in alarm as the admin's heartrate soared. "A fucking lesson?"

A deep breath followed. Flashes of memory followed, fragments of a Galarian dream that only one other had witnessed. Bryan could not understand. Howard had thought that he would, but the Lifebringer didn't understand his struggle.

"WHAT MORE DO I HAVE TO FUCKING LEARN? I GAVE MY BODY TO THE CAUSE! I TRIED TO FIX EVERYTHING... AND YET..." The admin clenched a fist. "AND YET..."

And yet...

"...it fucking hurts. I don't want to feel this. Xerneas could've solved this."

He walks over to Howard, all of his force in each step cracking the floor tile and grabs the man's arm and starts to apply pressure. "You see this?" he says shoving the scars on the man's hand in his face "THIS is what makes you human, THIS is what keeps you sane. PAIN." as he start to try and squeeze his arm. [break][break]

"The more you escape this pain the more detached and apathetic you become, the more you stop caring, that was his entire fucking lesson to me. You lose meaning in EVERYTHING." he growls before releasing him. [break] [break]

"If you think you can handle something like that, then go talk to him yourself. I'm sure he's listening. Go ruin your life for all I care. It certainly ruined mine." [break][break]

However he smirks a bit "This is also what you get for being a dickhead when I was upset."

Pressure is applied. A gurgling rasp quickly crescendos into a scream. Bryan is strong. Too strong. His might is an abnormality, a reminder of what Xerneas had done to him. Immortality. It had offered him immortality for as long as he could shoulder the weight of regeneration.

His body would remain as pristine as desired, his body would remain as scarred as desired. Bryan was a brutish man, harsh and cruel, yet he was strong.

He was alive.

"What keeps us human is passion, not pain! Every dream I've ever had has kept me moving. One foot at a time, Bryan. I'll drag my corpse to the finish line if I can grasp it!" He writhed in agony as Bryam pushed down on him. "I feel pain in spite of that, not because of it!"

Yet his heart... his heart...! It burned and sparked in shame and contempt. He had betrayed everyone in Dewford. Navy, Tsubaki, Eddie, Noel, and so many others to chase after it.

And...

And...

Yet...

"You're a massive piece of shit, Bryan Delarosa." His voice was a rattle. "I don't chase gods. I just want to kill one."

"Anyways. Killing a god? Really? That's your ultimate goal?" he asks him trying to move the conversation along. [break][break]

He mulls it over a bit "Fine. I'll help." he says as bryan crosses his arms "Apparently if we leave you alone too long you go and break like porcelein. Can't let the league think our upper brass are so vulnerable. I'm in charge of your security detail now." he declares as if Howard was not above him in status. However, the idea of killing a god, that was...interesting. If he could kill a god could that mean he could stave off death longer? Maybe claim the favor of another pokemon? He opened and closed his fist, his situation was strange but if Howard was so hungry to pursue his ideal world...[break][break]

Rocket was full of manipulators. Even if the admin was blind to much of puppeteering that the others did as they grasped for power while masquerading loyalty to the great cause that drove them. Each and every one chained the others to their own goal. Barnaby toyed with his colleagues, whispering gilded lies into their ears. Theo played with gods despite not being one himself.

Bryan was a beast. A cudgel that Rocket swung at their problems to make them go away. Xerneas had not enhanced him. It had lessened him. Now he could scheme and rise beyond his purpose in this world.

He could make Admin Fox dance, but Admin Fox would make him dance in turn.

"Oh?" His eye flickered in a mixture of pain and amusement. His tone mirrors Barnaby's. It's jovial. Mocking. The way Bryan turned away proved it. "You'll protect me, Bryan? I won't say no to your help, but know this:"

Silky tones turned to steel.

"I will give everything to this cause. Can you offer the same, Bryan? A frail hand reached out and turned the Rocket Beast's face back to Howard's with remarkable and frenzied might. "Are you a sword or a shield, I wonder?"

He feels Howard become bolder suddenly. He liked it. [break][break]

A gleam returns to his eyes when howard presents such a question, a fire being re-ignited in his soul. "I'll be whatever I need to be to get what I want." he responds "A sword, a shield, a gun, a healer." he says keeping his eyes lock on him and not moving away when howard gripped his face.[break][break]

"Are you going to give me what I want, Howard?" he asks him, remaining still and unphased and letting Howard decide what to say next. His red eyes attempting to burn a hole right through the man.

He let go.

"Perhaps, should we get through this upcoming battle. You will be the sword that cuts our enemies, the shield that blocks every blow, and the healer..."

Another exhale. Bryan's potential had reached its zenith, but he could still be used. He had been a Rocket Beast without his blessing, and he would continue to serve until the end. They were cogs in a greater machine, and the Lifebringer's roots could not stop its incessant grind forever.

"Stand over Sootopolis's walls and herald our victory. Stand over Mossdeep and proclaim our success." His eye met the Rocket Beast's and he smiled. "Then I'll give you what you want."

Assuming he recovered.

"A reason to live."
