They were looking for some kind of herb. [break][break]

Being a grunt meant being a gopher sometimes, as in, go for xyz. They didn't mind being an errand boy, but this time, they had a partner in crime. Clover's Hoyeon background lent him some knowledge of herbal remedies and knowledge of how to cook with aromatics, but they weren't sure they'd ever heard of rhodiola. She walked in step with her assigned associate. "Have you seen what we're looking for before?" All they knew was it was some kind curing herb. Or, something usually used for cures. And that it could survive high elevations.

for some strange reason, unbeknownst to him, they'd assigned a youth to work with kit that day. granted, the task itself wasn't particularly difficult. but even so, why was someone so young even embroiled in their work?[break][break]

"Hm?" He turned an eye on them, observant as he peered down his nose and to continued to shuffle along. His stride not once breaking despite the awkward stiltedness of it - courtesy of the brace and cane that supported him. "Oh, well...yes. Of course. It would seem impractical to send either of us if neither had any idea of what it looked like."[break][break]

He paused, considering with a thoughtful tilt of his head. "Unless, of course, this was intended as a fool's errand. In which case, you and I are both played for the fool. But that would be silly. I know what Rhodiola looks like."[break][break]

Or rather, he had at least seen photos and illustrations of rhodiola. He'd never actually scavenged it himself. "It's meant to be quite useful when used properly. Oh - it will be yellow." Was he really talking so much to a child? How strange.

She hummed thoughtfully at his response about how silly it'd be for them both to be clueless. "Fair enough." She perked up at the description. "Yellow's such a good color. Underrated." They kept their head on a swivel for such an herb, trying to think of something to ask him that wouldn't involve his age. Well, specifically. Clover was used to their elders telling stories nonstop, but people outside of the Hoyeon were a little less talkative. [break][break]

"Does it emit gas?" She pointed at the yellow gas billowing over a large white rock beside the path. Without waiting for an answer, she hurried along the side of it to look -- but it was a Weezing instead. "Oop, wasn't expecting a little friend!" It generated a smokescreen, so Clover rolled backwards out of the range and tossed out Archen's pokeball, giving him the opportunity to use tailwind and clear the smoke.

He arched a brow at the remark, mutely studying the kid as they continued to keep her eyes peeled for the plant in question. “It’s always been a bit bright for me,” they remarked, a bit flatly in self-ward observation. Idly, Kit poked at a stone with the foot of his cane. “It is also often a warning color,” he added, “In nature, just as much as the traffic signs you see on streets. So take care not to grow too enamored with it.”[break][break]
Yellow could spell danger just as emphatically as red.[break][break]
Kit frowned– “No, I don’t think so-” but of course, Clover was already ambling over to the bilious cloud leaving Kit to hurry after them. Honestly! Hadn’t he just said to be careful of certain colors only seconds ago? “Hecate, if you would please,” he looked to the houndour that had been trailing after them, sniffing along in the grass.[break][break]
As the archen cleared away the smog, Hecate jumped up, BITING at the koffing, though she didn’t do much more than manage to nudge it with her snout, bouncing it up like a beach ball before Kit snapped it into a pokeball. They looked pointed at Clover. “Like I said, take care.”

"Your pokemon moves super fast," Clover acknowledged as she got up and dusted herself off. Kit's criticism was earned, but she couldn't help but laugh kindly at it. "Where's your sense of adventure?" They threw their arms out wide to gesture to the world. [break][break]

Still, they got back to the path to dutifully return to searching for the herb. "Between the two of us, I don't think anything out here will really hurt us." Unearned confidence, the trademark of youth. [break][break]

A sweet scent filled the air. A combee came rather close, but Clover didn't flinch. She actually rather liked bugs, even though she was raised primarily around ground and rock types. The earth sect of Hoyeon was just like that, but Clover had a notable affinity for flying and bug types, and so she easily reached her hands out and let the Combee land in them. "So gentle," she praised softly. "I think it's cool that there are still some docile pokemon despite the conflict, like, causing a lot of stampedes and swarms and angry pokemon."[break][break]

The upset wildlife had made it necessary for most people to travel in pairs when they went outside.

“Yes, she is quite quick, isn’t she?” He watched the houndour trot back toward them, nubby tail wagging. His gaze remained neutral, always at odds with how he felt toward this particular species. Though, Hecate, to her credit, had always been loyal. Perhaps that was the key to keeping an aggressive creature in check. When Clover piped up, Kit looked at them flatly. He blinked once or twice, then sucked in a long breath. “I seem to have left it at home,” was his dry response.[break][break]
His skepticism and pointed looks only grew as Clover continued to blithely blabber on. “Is that so?” It must have been nice, to be so confident. Perhaps at one point, he might have felt the same. Held the same zeal for whatever came at him. But he was tired and worn down now. And not nearly so blissfully unaware.[break][break]
“Then I hope you don’t get a cruel, cold dose of reality.” He might have sounded harsh and dour, but Kit meant it. He was a walking testament to what a ferocious pokemon could do, and was capable of in unkind hands.[break][break]
It wasn’t something he’d wish on another person, let alone a kid.[break][break]
So his gaze softened somewhat as he watched her interact with the combee—if only minimally. “It is a marvel, isn’t it?” They raised a fair point. For all of his negative thoughts about aggressive creatures only moments before, he knew the inverse to be true. Even a wild pokemon could be gentle, despite the odds stacked against it. “Pokemon are fascinating. Though I often think it is to do with species, or perhaps rare temperaments.”[break][break]
The larvesta that scuttled from the brush was not so sweet, and embers wafted up from its body with territorial gusto. Hecate made another dash forward, protective as she retaliated with a stunning flame charge.[break][break]
“She is proof of that, actually,” he said, nodding his head at the canine.

Clover turned her head to hide a wry smile. He was funny, but she wasn't sure he was intending to be. "Rare temperament for sure. Between you and me, houndour and similar pokemon tend to freak me out. I'm used to seeing them act kinda, like, feral." She said it with uncertainty, not wanting to offend. [break][break]

After all, their frequent collecting of bugs and birds could make many people uncomfortable, too. "But I guess we shouldn't judge by appearance," they acknowledged as the two of them worked their way up the path. "This guy, for example, would scare quite a few people." They gestured at the Victreebel currently snoozing. "I don't know how dangerous their toxins are specifically, but I can see why people would keep their distance." [break][break]

Still, it was hard to hate a snoozing pokemon. Clover thought they were cute when they dozed. Oricorio seemed to agree, coming up to investigate the Victreebel in its personal space. "Do you study pokemon behavior-izing?" Her mind scrambled for the word behaviorism and abandoned the pursuit quickly. "I think its neat, but I've been spending my time trying to hunt down the Protectors. Er, the Regi-crew, I think you folks would call it. Saw Regieleki once." A husk of it, they'd later been told.

he certainly wasn't intending to provoke humor, but he didn't miss the smile they tried to hide out of sight. it wasn't anything he was unaccustomed to - his words were often interpreted wryly. her next response provoked a short nod from Kit. Understanding. "You're wise to be wary. A houndoom is the reason I am the way I am now, after all." He stuck his leg forward, metal brace and all, and gave it a wiggle.[break][break]

though there was merit in clover's belief to not judge a book by its cover, kit wasn't certain he wholly shared the sentiment. when they gestured to the victreebel, he had to laguh a bit. "it may look docile now, but it's actually quite acidic." he shook his head. "it's smart to catch it while unaware. i don't study behaviors though, no. not specifically, however fascinating the subject is."[break][break]

for a moment, he contemplated catching the sweet-looking carbink that peeked out from behind a large root. but in the end, he turned back to clover and let it be. "i study toxins, actually. the science behind them. which is why i know that victreebel you just caught is clever - its digestive acids are so potent, it can melt prey quickly, but in doing so, the scent turns sweet - allowing to lure and catch more." he blinked, wondering if they would be unnerved. "you're looking for the regis? why is that?"

Clover feels very lucky as Kit explains the acid Victreebel can generate. They had little interest in experiencing it firsthand, and now they know to keep their distance when they use Victreebel in a fight. "Toxins can be cool, but I got nailed by a Qwilfish when I was younger." Her nose scrunched up. "Shit hurt." [break][break]

Archen scurried ahead of them in the path to investigate an Obstagoon, though he had to dance around it as the larger pokemon struck out with a cross chop. Trusting Archen to handle himself, she turned her full attention to her partner. "I think those guardians are the only ones that can really protect Hoenn. Like, they're all connected to the environment and know things we don't and, like, they've been largely absent until recently. I think they change things."[break][break]

They were tools that served Earth Mother, and Clover trusted that their power could fix the destruction facing Hoenn, especially that that was caused by the League government's careless expansion and development. "I want to find Fang. Er, Regidrago, I think you guys call it. Fang's the most unusual of them, and I think it's very unexpected that way. Summoning the Guardians, though, that's the hard part. They're, uh, not very reactive." Or maybe it was more accurate to say they were just slow to react.

“They are incredibly fascinating, yes,” Kit replied, nodding sagely as Clover mentioned the pain of a Qwilfish sting. “ But that is undoubtedly also why caution is essential when working with them.” Like he had mentioned, colors and other physical aspects were warnings, like yellow. It was unsurprising that most victreebel were that noxious hue. “But it is also rewarding when you are successful in study.”[break][break]
Some of his terseness, it seemed, had slipped away they more he spoke of his own hyper-fixations, er…pursuits. Kit’s glance strayed ahead as his companion’s archen impressively struck down a much larger obstagoon. His houndour, however, remained dutifully by his side, rather than jump forward to assist.[break][break]
“Do you mean Hoenn the environment, or Hoenn, the people?” It seemed like an important distinction. “If they are displeased with how the environment has been treated, would they not be a powerful enemy, rather than an ally?” Titans, he wasn’t too sure, were all that distinguishing about the morality of individual humans.[break][break]
“Fang?” he echoed before Clover clarified. “Ah. I see. What does Regidrago preside over, exactly?” Draco- that wasn’t exactly a natural element, as the rest were. Kit looked at them expectantly, hands clasped behind his back like the most erudite of professors. It was always important, of course, to foster intellect and discussion in the youths of their organization.
