War was on the horizon. In the air. Felt in the bones and on the tip of the tongue or in the back of minds. Everyone could feel it, and one would need to be blind and deaf to the world to call it a surprise. Those who could leave had. Those who couldn’t bunkered down and sat on the edge of their chairs.

Ready for whatever may lie in store.

Grigori sat in the apartment of Annalise. He had asked marilee beaufort for permission to be in the apartment, as well as a good time to wait for Annalise. Finally, he had asked for some privacy. No one was home, save for him.

And the target. He heard the footsteps outside the front door. Faint. They got closer, and soon the door unlocked. They came in.

Grigori sat in the living room. Waiting. A coffee pot sat on the table, and two cups alongside a dish full of one-use creams and a tin of sugar. He sat with his elbows on his knees and face full of thoughts. Impossible to predict, in the low light of the afternoon.

“Ms. Annalise. I’m sorry to surprise you.”

“We need to talk.”

until now, annalise has been able to avoid him.[break][break]at first, by ducking up the stairs as soon as she got home, then later by his sudden absence in the house. eventually, he had slipped from her mind, a footnote written beneath the horrors of her confinement, a problem that had discarded itself in the end. or at least that was how it had been until today. today, she notices the coffee set out on the living room table, but doesn't realize it's a trap until it's too late. [break][break]she hovers in the hall, stone-faced and unreadable. her fingers slowly curl into her palms at her sides, the truest signal of her discomfort. he's not supposed to be here, she thinks, and her anger simmers at the sight of him hunched over in the gloom. He could see the apprehension in her eyes. The accusatory gaze. Not that Grigori deserved it– he deserved far less, to be completely honest. It was lucky she did not immediately call the police and have him escorted off the premises. At best. For that, he was thankful.

“I apologize once more, for the lack of notice. From my experiences with Ms. june sleigh , it is sometimes the only way to have an important conversation.”

She was much like her Talonflame in a sense. Ready to take flight whenever the situation called for it, justified or otherwise. Sometimes, one had to lay a trap in order to prevent that from happening.

And June had enough in common with Annalise for him to try the same with her.

“It’s about the prison. I want to explain and apologize for my actions before it is too late,” he said. He had yet to truly meet her gaze. “War looms, and death does not discriminate.”

Would he die? Annalise? June? He shivered. “Please, Ms. Annalise."

a dangerous flicker passes behind her eyes at the mention of june sleigh, like it's some great injustice for him to know and weaponize her in this conversation. still, it's that same relationship that keeps her rooted to the spot. it's that same relationship that allows him to sit there and speak. [break][break]she stares him in the face, even as he avoids looking at her directly, intense enough to cut if he falters. [break][break]"go, then." So he had the opportunity given to him. Absolutely perfect. One half of his mind sighed in relief. Thank goodness for even the opportunity to make things right. It would’ve been all too easy for her to demand he leave. Banish her from her house, never to return except to gather his things.

Yet the other half of him begged what he could possibly say now. Explain that he saw his roommates good friend’s father’s corpse? Below a copy of himself, no less? Preposterous. Immeasurably stupid.

But the truth. One that’d get him killed. Suicide. And he’d promised against suicide.

Yet he couldn’t lie. Ethically and due to obligations. He scratched his left arm.

“It was due to that one man’s aura– whatever it had been,” he started off. The truth. Others could theoretically corroborate the event. Jayden’s power had caused him to hallucinate. To see something that wasn’t there.

“I saw something from my past, something I never wanted to relive,” he said. The truth. “I thought I was back at a critical moment.”

Another truth.

“I…”

If only he could keep telling those. Much easier, in a sense. They could be verified, and left people sure that his words meant something. Unfortunately, he had to delve back into his bag of tricks.

“I saw myself standing over a corpse.”

Truth. A sigh escaped his lips, and his hands went for the instinctive nurture of a coffee cup.

“It’s not something I tell people. Not even June. I…”

“I’ve killed, Annalise.” Truth.

“My father was not a good man.” Obscured, misleading, irrelevant, absolutely not connected– fact. Undeniably so. "Alcoholic. Dead beat. Wasted our money. After some point, started to..."

Hopefully her imagination could fill in the blanks. It was better that way. He turned a cautious eye to her, then back to the black steam that evaporated from his mug.

annalise remembers the prison in disjointed memories, but she remembers the aura he mentions. the endless, repeating loop in that jail cell, returning her to the same fixed point in time over and over. it's why she attacked jayden cross in the first place — to stop it. [break][break]but her desire to kill him had been righteous, grigori's desire to kill her is not. he gives his explanation in halting details, but the circumstances aren't smoothed away by words alone. if anything, there's something unsettling about him, shadowed in the living room, confessing that he's killed before. [break][break]"and your dad," she starts, wading into uncertain waters. "was he the only one?"

Is this how the King felt, when the bishop or rook or some other piece had it down in check? He had to answer, had to answer fast, or risk everything. Once more, he must act or face the disastrous consequences.

The hole must be deeper, lest it be for naught. His own grave will be much shallower.

“No.”

Every picture, a thousand words. A person, one million. His crimes?

Still being told.

“I was there, at the search parties for the missing peoples… last September?” He struggled to recall the exact date. Time flew when you were a criminal. “During the blood moon. When we were attacked by the Megalopolans, I acted. Killed.”

They were a hot topic amongst Hoenn, but that event had been brutal for all parties involved. It made it easy to pretend it was the only other time. But he had to sell it better. Without lying. What joy his life was. Did the man who gave him this fate feel happy in his grave?

“But my line of work… they weigh down on me, innocent or guilty or otherwise,” he said carefully. Constructed. Let him play the part of the unhappy Insurance Worker. One whose heart wept for those they denied life-saving money. “My line of work is merciless. It’s become rather hard to sleep at night.”

Let his ruse speak the rest. It must. If not, then he might as well flee Annalise’s wrath prematurely.

“But that is not your fault, your concern, or something that must come in the way of your life,” he finished. He took a sip from the sweet black liquid. More sugar. “Something I inadvertently did.”

“Words alone can not express my regret, nor my sorrows about the matter. What would you have of me?”
