They tread upon ground rarely touched by men. Even now, on this eve of war, there is time for discovery, insight, and adventure. The dog does not know why he was chosen. Perhaps it is simply a case of Admin Fox wishing to put SPECTRA’s first blade to proper use. Perhaps his rates are more reasonable than the other grunts. Perhaps it’s the proximity this island has to a power spot, which means he too can drink deep of a slumbering god’s power.[break][break]
Either way, they’re here. They stand upon one of Hoenn’s many mirage islands. The dog charts a path across the beach, up a path turned over by wild Pokemon. It warms him to know that life still persists, even on these undiscovered corners. It feels like he is travelling to another world. Though he is but a dog admiring fine art, he can still gaze at it all, admire it, take in the beauty.[break][break]
“Man. Can’t believe this place really ex-” A sharp hand raises up, pulling the other behind him. A flash of red sends out his Ceruledge, Jubei. Anyone else might have missed the movement in the grass. What comes for them is a creature that should not exist. Arcanine are a famous breed. They are known throughout the world as guardian beasts. This one affects the image of a stone guardian, grinning at them when fire clashes against fire. It bounds off, sizing them up, deciding to not press the fight.[break][break]
“The hell was that? Never seen an Arcanine that looked like that before.”

Mirage Islands in this region are a dime a dozen; change on the dollar.

They can hardly be considered mirages anymore, just distantly placed inconveniences that cause shipwrecks and issues for those trying to chart careful passage through the region's increasingly clogged waterways. The admin dislikes them on principle, unless they have ruins to explore.

Yet there is only one ruin attached to a Mirage Island that truly interests the admin, and it sits at the bottom of the sea unused.

"That, Black Dog, is an Arcanine from classical Sinnoh. We call it Hisui." Admin Fox thinks of Yuina Higashi and his studies as his cape flutters slightly. "They're far more... hard-headed. Try not to get tackled by them."

He silently scoots behind his Pupitar and Hitoshi to create a wall. He's more confident now, but getting melted doesn't sound like a particularly compelling way to go.

"Did you bring your Dynamax Band?"

“Yeah!” He pumps a hand in the air, pulling back his sleeve just enough to reveal the band waiting beneath. “This thing’s good shit, Rookie. My Corviknight n’ my Lapras both had some Max Soup, so they can gigantamax and everythin’.” Considering how small this island is, comparatively speaking, they will find no succor from his Lapras if push comes to shove.[break][break]
“What was it that made Admin Fox wanna send us here? Somethin’ bout some guy last spotted on an island like this?” Unless there’s an impending calamity, he rarely pays attention during briefings. It takes someone like Naomi Sato or THEO BECKETT showing up to get him standing up straight. When they brief the dog on a mission, it’s big. It’s serious. This is just…[break][break]

"Oh." Howard frowned and paused for a moment, as if pretending to think. "I doubt he'd care. He's pretty cool as long as you don't mess with anything historically valuable."

Slowly, his eye narrowed at Hitoshi as the man dreamed of Arcanine. The Black Dog was a sword, and his nature as a blade meant that he was only as sheathed as his masters wished him to be. Swords could cut, slash, bleed, and break.

"That means," Howard's voice was dry, "that if you blow up anything valuable, he'll kill you with his left hand while taking a piss with his right. Don't want to end up like Fernando now, do you?"

Sometimes leaning into Hitoshi's image of Admin Fox had its benefits.

"Let's catch your dog, and we can go back to scoping out the island."

“Gonna need some help, Rookie. This’s a job fer the best of the best.” He looks past his friend to the creature gestating in his rocky cocoon. “Alone among heaven and earth, Serizawa is the honored one.” After the words are spoken, he nods a sagacious nod. It isn’t hard to track down an Arcanine. They are, after all, large, unruly beasts. They leave tracks. The dog struts after them without a care in the world.[break][break]
All goes well until the moment he realizes that it is not one, but two dogs he chases. First to come out is the one he has seen before, an older one with a tongue wagging. The other, bigger, carries the wrinkles and scars of an older, more reserved creature. It surveys, not yet attacking.[break][break]
“Huuuh.” He cocks his head, looking to the other. “Yo, it’s a parent n’ a kid.” Out comes another pokeball. Tokugawa, his Kingambit, steps onto the field. His Iron Head clashes with the reckless wild charge of the younger Arcanine.[break][break]
“Back me up, Rookie!”

Serizawa stirred in a rocky cocoon that would not yet strain, crack, or shatter for more time to come. The Larvitar within had liquified under the intense pressure, shifting and reforming.

When the tyrant within shattered its cage and unveiled its might to the outside world, many would weep as Junior's greatest son reached the zenith of his might.

"Yeah, he's pretty strong." Howard agreed. "Honored with the greatest genes in the region."

The two dogs stood before them, causing Howard to scratch his chin thoughtfully. With Hitoshi here, it'd be an easy fight. His Kingambit lunged forward, its sharpened skull threatened to split the Arcanine from leg to chest.

"Thrash. Go." Serizawa didn't move. With a deep breath, Howard regarded the pupa with a cold eye hardened in the crucible of Galarian war. "Serizawa."

His voice grew hard as the Fox grew fangs.

"Go." Serizawa stared at the admin before turning towards the Growlithe. Gas built up in the pupa before lunging forward, crashing into the pup while Kingambit danced with the larger beast.

The older beast acts foolishly, by all objective metrics. Objective metrics are but so much ash scattered in the wind before the heart’s burning furnace. When the pup is threatened, he pivots. A sudden fierceness is roused in its eyes. Where before he seemed more content to guard its territory, he now rushes with purpose.[break][break]
The younger pup snarls, shadows beginning to manifest all around its mane. Unhampered by logic, it tries to bite into Seizawa with a fire fang. Its fangs find no purchase against the rock, but the other creature has other plans. He meets Serizawa with a head smash, putting space between the pup and the larva.[break][break]
“Yo, Tokugawa, hold up!” Something Tokugawa, the dog learns, is wholly uninterested in doing. An opponent has turned its back upon him. Tokugawa’s blade lowers and launches in a harsh kowtow cleave.[break][break]
“Rookie, cover my back!” Channeling the spirit of another man, an old swordsman and a hero of Galar, the dog grips his cursed blade and charges in against his own Pokemon. An older man’s instincts guide the dog, if for just long enough for his blade to strike true. Metal meets metal as the cleave strikes the Hasegawa Muramasa instead of the parent protecting its child.[break][break]
This gives the old Arcanine pause. The dog’s back is exposed to him, but he does not attack. Not yet.

Serizawa and the pup make space against one another, but it is a pyrrhic victory for the dog. Serizawa is a force of nature, pressurized in the fires of battle and compressed under a mountain of dirt and stone.

Rock Head protects the pup from much. It does not stop Serizawa's ceaseless march forward.

Without a moment to spare, the Pupitar lunged forward again in an unyielding charge to Thrash the Growlithe within an inch of its life. Its owner does not leash up Serizawa. The Pokémon is competent and Howard can offer it little. Instead, he surveys the battlefield with an eye for battle.

In his mind, the distant hoofbeats as Valkyrie charges a Dynamaxed Pokémon rings out. His eye squeezes shut.

"This Arcanine..." The admin's eye narrowed in on the senior dog. He watched Hitoshi's back cautiously, even as his Pupitar continues its rampage. "Hitoshi, watch yourself."

The Arcanine and the dog look upon one another. They see one another as two beasts with a similar mission, two creatures of fire held aloft by an inner flame. Tokugawa stands its ground, poised to strike again. That his own trainer stopped him rouses defiant anger within the supreme overlord. [break][break]
“Yer lookin’ after that’un, huh?” He nods at the Growlithe, growling at Serizawa and slowly being consumed by rising shadows. “Full time job I reckon.” Tense though their talk is, Arcanine huffs. It is a moment of levity in the gathering tension. “I know how that goes. Look, we ain’t tryin’ to hurt yer kid!” The dog exposes his back, turning to Howard.[break][break]
“Ain’t that right, Rookie? Recall Serizawa! I get th-” Tokugawa lunges again, right for him. If his master will not move, the shogun will go through him.

Serizawa does not understand honor, nor does he understand the notion of protecting a young one. The Pupitar's existence is a miserable one, confined in a hard shell until he finally grows strong enough to crack the pupa and sunder mountains.

His father is an invalid, yet Junior's brood have given form to something equally broken. There is a reason that Howard rarely used the beast. Compared the machines like Atlas, Crumble, and Regice, Serizawa abides by his own rules. Gases vent from the pupa's shell, ignoring the admin's order.

"Serizawa." Howard's voice cut across the battlefield. His eye narrowed as he regarded the Pupitar. "No."

They locked eyes. The admin had seen much in a small amount of time. The trainer who struggled at the Vital City was still there, but they had been tempered by conflict and the weight of a mission.

A mutual understanding was reached. Something shifted within the pupa, at least for a moment.

"Not again. Never again. Help Hitoshi or I'll punt you all the way to Dewford." Howard grumbled, crossing his arms. The Pupitar lunged forward, knocking Tokugawa backwards under the weight of its Stone Edge. "Good, you're learning. Took you long enough, shit... I've had you for a year, now."

Howard's tone is whiny, but he felt remarkably proud of the exchange.

A strike that would have slain the dog is instead turned aside by stone. The dog nods in gratitude at his fellow before turning his attention back to Tokugawa.[break][break]
“Listen here you piecea shit. I was there when you were born. I helped you kick the asses of those other Bisharp. Yer Leader’s Crest sits on yer head ‘cause I put it there. So yer gonna listen t’me.” He turns again to face the father, who looks at him with renewed respect.[break][break]
“Bet that’s yer kid. Look. You ain’t gonna be able to get him no help here on this island. I don’t wanna hurt ya. Don’t wanna hurt him. Promise ya, if there’s a way to cure a shadow Pokemon, I’ll find it for ya.”[break][break]
The old one cocks his head. A question is asked through the language of eyes. It is an age old question, asked in stories and movies throughout time.[break][break]
Why would you help me?[break][break]
“Listen. We live in fucked up times. If we don’t stick together, we’re all dead.” His eyes turn back towards Tokugawa, who rushes to strike at Serizawa despite his words. “You know how to Flare Blitz, right?”[break][break]
As flames gather around the Arcanine, the dog gathers that he does. His child advances upon his fellow human as flames crash into the Kingambit.[break][break]
“Rookie! Catch that Growlithe!”

"E-eh? Me?" The admin is broken from his serious stupor by Hitoshi's obscene command. How long had it been since someone had told him what to do? Almost a year, by this point. "I'll just fuck it up!"

Yet they both know that he won't. The archaeologist is remarkably dexterous with his hands, being used to pulling records of the past from stone to bring yesterday into today.

The Pokeball is weighed in his hand, before being flung.

Serizawa watches, unaware of the Growlithe's corruption. Perhaps he noticed, but simply didn't care. Light and dark, good and evil, it doesn't matter to a beast barely chained up by its own body's limitations. Once the pupa cracks, that will change. For now, nothing matters but the now.

Morals do not matter.

Howard's aim does.

The ball lands true, and the Growlithe turns into a red light within. It falls to the ground and begins to twitch. One... Two...

He does not, in the end, fuck it up. The ball’s gentle click signals a good catch. Growlithe’s elder does not turn upon his fellows. Instead, as Tokugawa reels, the dog uses the opportunity to recall him into his ball. There will be a reckoning for this later, especially when the Arcanine is incorporated into the dog’s team, but all will be alright for now.[break][break]
“Good throw, Rookie.” Says the dog, sheathing his sword. Arcanine is still on edge, looking at Serizawa. The young pupa was eager to strike, eager to kill.[break][break]
“Serizawa’s cool, old guy.” Dark eyes pivot towards him. They regard the words and the dog who speaks them, but Serizawa is never fully taken out of sight. “Yer kid’s in good hands. I bet a human trained with you guys, huh?” These words give the Arcanine pause. It’s an inference worthy of a human. “Yeah. Thought so. Lead us to him. We’re lookin’ fer the guy.”[break][break]
A moment of silence, one more look at Serizawa, and the Arcanine turns to lead them away. Just behind him follows the dog with the others leading up the rear. It isn’t a far walk, but what remains at its end is grisly. The camp is old, months old. Good equipment has decayed in the tropical weather. Rust has taken the metal, and much of the camp has been ransacked. The corpse is so old it doesn’t stink.[break][break]
“Shit.” The dog scratches the back of his neck. “Wonder what killed him.” Somehow, he knows. The killer sleeps within his new home.

The admin was no mortician, but even he could recognize signs of death. Years of working with mummies and other anthological records ensured that little of the trainer's fate went unnoticed. After kneeling down and prodding a few bones, he noticed cracks in several where a jaw had crushed them.

In other spots, he noticed burn marks where the skeleton had been charred.

"His bond did him in. Poor man. I lack the proper tools to do a full autopsy, but from a glance..." The admin turned to the Growlithe with a faint flicker of revulsion. He pitied the dog, but its corruption reminded him far too much of Cillian Quinn. It was a connection he preferred buried.

"We bury him properly." Howard lit a cigarette with a tinderbox and sighed. He nudged the ground with his foot. "Shouldn't be too long. I'll go get my Golurk. See if you can find any written records to take back. I want this man's fate to be chronicled."

He meandered off to get his Pokeballs.

There are records. Admin Fox chose well when he picked this dog. Someone else might have missed them, hidden as they were in the tent. Arcanine points out more, and it ends up being a good haul. There’s a sad tale in there for a man with the eyes to see it, about a man who had the chance to have his thesis proven true.[break][break]
