It was her fault, ultimately, for letting Pelipper loose on the beach while so many people were indulging in the festivities. He had flown off immediately, probably to eat some unsuspecting person's funnel cake or dango. His sweet tooth knew no bounds. She cupped her mouth and called out, "Peli! Where are you!" But her voice was mostly lost in the ruckus of the crowd. Keiko sighed softly, wondering how long he would indulge in the treats before returning to her.

Unfortunately, Sasha was the victim of the rogue Pelipper's hunger. She cried out, alarmed, as the bird swooped down and snatched the salted soft pretzel from her hands. [break][break]

"Hey! Give that back!" [break][break]

At her side, Chikorita shouted what she could only assume were obscenities in his language. The Grass-type chased after the bird, uncaring for the people in his way. Sasha followed more carefully, muttering apologies to those she bumped with her elbows or squeezed past. [break][break]

"Chikorita, come back here! Just let it have it!"

Pelipper's path was erratic as he zigzagged through the crowd. Keiko followed the disruption in the crowd like a parted sea, but before she could cut off his path, the bird barreled into a slowking. "Easy, easy," she placated as she came in close, but the wild slowking had decided forgiveness was for chumps. It headbutt Pelipper, who jerked backwards a few feet, his stolen snack yoinked out of his mouth and into the air by gravity.

Keiko tossed a pokeball at the slowking's back just to get it out of the picture for a moment. She hurried to Pelipper's side to check on him, just in time to see a quick-moving Chikorita. Pelipper saw him too and started thrashing beneath her hands, scrambling to get back to the sky. "Wh- stop freaking out!"

Hot on the trail of her Chikorita, Sasha witnessed the Slowking's HEADBUTT knock her soft pretzel clear from the Pelipper's mouth. It landed in the sand, fated to be ruined by inedible grittiness. [break][break]

Heaving a sigh, she turned her attention to the young woman wrestling with the devious bird. [break][break]

"Is that your Pokémon?" Sasha asked the stranger, scooping up her Chikorita before the Grass-type could exact righteous revenge.

She was in the middle of wrangling her bird when she noticed the other woman scoop up her Chikorita. Slowly, the dots started to connect in her mind, but the logical conclusion was solidified at the question. "Yes," she said with a long-suffering sigh. "Was he harassing you?" Her gaze flickered between the woman to the Chikorita.

It made perfect sense that Pelipper couldn't go long without harassing a fellow trainer. "I take it your Chikorita pursued because that pretzel was yours? Her grip tightened on the Pelipper, who squawked indignantly. "Let me buy you a new one. He should know better by now, but his big mouth gets him in more trouble than he ever had as a Wingull in Sinnoh." She finally released her bird, who flew high but stayed obediently close, now aware he was on thin ice.

Keiko extended a hand to the other woman. "Keiko Mori, sorry to make your acquaintance for this reason," she said with good humor.

How awkward, to admit to another trainer that their Pokémon had stolen from you. But Sasha nodded. Pokémon were sentient creatures, with their own agency; being owned by a trainer did not absolve them of their crimes. [break][break]

"I'd appreciate that," she said, trying not to sound accusatory. The other woman's kind offer put a smile on Sasha's face, making the effort less difficult. [break][break]

She released her Chikorita, who circled her on the sand while keeping a wary eye on the Pelipper overhead. Ignoring her Pokémon's behavior—because it was truly wise to be cautious—Sasha started back toward the boardwalk, leading the way to the pretzel stall. [break][break]

"That's all right. It's not like Pelipper did any lasting harm. I'm Sasha, by the way." [break][break]

A wild Piplup crossed their path, drawing Chikorita's attention. With no other outlet for his frustration, the Grass-type lashed out with MAGICAL LEAF at the small penguin. Before a true scuffle could break out, Sasha lobbed a Pokéball to snatch the Piplup out of harm's way.

Sasha's acceptance of her apology was a relief. Keiko had little interest in making enemies, particularly at the hands of her Pelipper that needed a shorter leash. She was happy to follow along towards the pretzel stand. "So, Sasha, are you here for the Clamperl diving?" She had tried her own hand at it earlier that morning and caught little else besides pokeball litter.

Their path was filled with bustling people, but everyone seemed to be absorbed in their own agendas and moved quickly. It was more activity than she was used to. "Sinnoh doesn't have a lot of events that bring this many people out. I'm surprised so many people made time for the beach." Perhaps the looming conflict made people eager for levity.

Pelipper cawed above her head, drawing Keiko's attention just in time to see the bird underneath a spotlight from a fairy - the Clefable half-buried in the sand. She had little interest in letting Pelipper's ego get inflated, so she tossed a pokeball at the Clefable to end the spotlight.

She hit the nail on the head. Clamperl diving was an exciting activity, but the payoff was minimal if you were looking for material goods over memories. "I did try my hand at it earlier. Nothing but pokeballs. It bugs me that there's so much litter in the beach." She wasn't a diehard environmentalist, but surely people had some respect for the world they inhibited.

She fell behind Sasha's foot falls as the other woman navigated through the crowd masterfully. A small buzzing filled her ear and she turned instinctively, hands coming together to catch whatever bug had flown at her. However, she clasped her hands around a Ribombee instead of an annoying pest. Even in her hands, the docile pokemon preferred to touch her hair rather than attack her. "Um, you're coming home with me." Far too cute to pass up.

It took a moment for her to remember her mission; she hustled through the crowd to find Sasha reunited with a pretzel and - offering her one? "Oh, I owe you, please. I can't accept," she said as she pulled at her wallet, "...and I heard there's a crab boil happening down the street in a few hours, so I'm trying to fast." She laughed at her own silly confession. "Seafood here is worlds better than what you can get in Sinnoh, I tell ya."

"Oh, a crab boil? That sounds fun, actually. Maybe I should go with you," Sasha mused, though in truth, she was feeling half-hearted. The high population of beachgoers was already causing her stress, though she tried her best to keep it from showing on her face or in her body language. [break][break]

It was important to practice navigating such scenarios, after all. [break][break]

Sliding her purse back into her bag, Sasha stepped aside so Keiko could pay for her new pretzel, enjoying the warmth and saltiness of the first bite. As she waited, movement near the ground caught her eye. She tensed, for it moved against the general flow of the crowd. [break][break]

But it was only a Togepi, overwhelmed and confused by the noisy throng. [break][break]

A soft smile tugged at Sasha's lips. Crouching, she broke off a piece of her pretzel and offered it to the lost Pokémon. "Here, you can stay with me," she said in a calm, encouraging voice. The Togepi shuffled forward, enticed by the prospect of food. [break][break]

With her other hand, Sasha removed an empty Pokéball from her purse.
