"What the hell is happening here..."[break][break]
Maybe it shouldn't have been shocking - or even out of the ordinary. Their region was already falling apart, what was one more sinking island? Still, it was a harrowing sight: the crumbling buildings, the violently split earth, and the destroyed habitats. What had once been a peaceful nature preserve was now desperately in need of disaster relief.[break][break]
As he waded onto the shore, something sparkled, catching Caleb's eye. To his right was the mouth of a seaside cavern, covered in Tera Crystals, grinning like a water-logged, toothy maw. For some reason, the sight made him shiver with an ominous foreboding. Trouble seemed to manifest wherever there was Tera energy, these days.[break][break]
"I guess that cave is as good a place as any to start," he motioned to it while addressing his companion. jack wainwright had been assigned to help him collect data and other League resources, before they were swallowed by the sea. "I'll send Nox ahead, to scout for potential dangers."[break][break]
Hearing his name, Nox hopped off Caleb's back, then darted towards the cave.

Pamplemousse nodded to his mission partner as he came ashore. One place is as good as another, this or that, may as well be here. He had responded to the Ranger call for assistance partly to keep up appearances for Jack's work and partly to hone continue honing his battle prowess. Instead he found himself entering a damp cave behind Caleb's Lokix.[break][break]

"Think we'll run into any Rockets here?" Pamplemousse asked, his tone cool and even. He hoped they would.[break][break]

Instead they ran into a wall of solid green, as strange ropes of seaweed intertwined with crystalline growths blocked the cavern from floor to ceiling. With a small sigh, Pamplemousse released Jack's Mismagius and commanded, "Burn it."[break][break]

Eerie chanting filled the cavern as Mismagius began searing away the plant life, carefully weaving the fiery spell around the tera crystal growths. Impatience filled him as he turned to Caleb, opening his mouth to start a conversation before quickly snapping it shut. Pamplemousse had no need to fill the space with empty words.

Caleb glanced side-long at Jack. There was something off about the way he was staring straight ahead, voice cold and expression calculating. There was a strange glint in his eyes when he asked about potential Rockets, as if he were eager for a fight.[break][break]
The Jack Caleb knew was a laid-back fellow with a generally optimistic outlook. He'd been through tough times, sure, but they all had lately...and despite that, he'd never struck Caleb as particularly vengeful.[break][break]
Jack was also the sort of guy to fill a tense void with enjoyable conversation. Caleb remembered their snowed-in hang-out at the Slateport Ranger HQ with fond appreciation. Now, the other man stood in stoic silence as his Mismagius burned them a better pathway through the cavern.[break][break]
"Hey, are you doing okay, Jack? It's been a little while since we last - "[break][break]
A cracking sound interrupted the inquiry; as a particularly dense network of vines were burned away, one of the massive Tera crystal pillars began to lean dangerously in the direction of the Rangers. Before it could do any damage, however, Nox swiftly shattered it with a BRICK BREAK. All around them, shards of crystal sparkled.

Shattered crystals glittered around him as Pamplemousse spared a suspicious glance at Caleb. Did he suspect something? Jack considered him a good friend, perhaps he suspected something in Pamplemousse's behavior. No, of course not. This was Jack's status quo, always having someone concerned about him instead of standing on his own two feet.[break][break]

"I'm fine, Caleb. Focus on the mission."[break][break]

He turned away from the man and gestured for Jack's Mismagius to illuminate the way. Mystical Fire swirled around the pokemon, dancing across the walls and refracting through the broken shards of crystal. Their path sloped gradually down until the cavern narrowed into a tight tunnel that was passable only if they went one-by-one.[break][break]

"Good ambush point," Pamplemousse observed as they stopped, staring into the shadows of the tunnel until it turned a blind corner. He flexed his fist hopefully.

"Uh, right," he replied, brow furrowing in confusion. "The mission. Got it."[break][break]
Caleb tried to recall whether or not the other Ranger was intent on a promotion. Maybe that was why he was acting extra...intense. Perhaps he was trying to catch ollie morales's attention or something. He didn't need to be perfect for Caleb to recommend him, though. Jack knew Caleb and Ollie were close, didn't he? Caleb was sure he'd said something about that before, but doubt creeped into the back of his mind now. Something about the whole situation just felt off, but he couldn't pinpoint what.[break][break]
The MYSTICAL FIRE illuminated the narrow passage before them, and Caleb stopped, feeling apprehensive. "Sure, but if we're outnumbered, it's going to make for a difficult exit."[break][break]
Nox crept forward, entering the tunnel. Caleb followed after him, walking as silently as he could manage. Soft footfalls, slowed breathing - he focused on all of the techniques he'd learned in Kanto, to ensure nothing heard him coming. Eventually, an opening appeared, and Caleb crouched low, peering around a boulder.[break][break]
"Someone's there," he whispered to Jack. A man-shaped figure seemed to be struggling with...something on the ground?

Pamplemousse sensed the apprehension in Caleb's voice, but he disagreed with the man, if only silently. If they were outnumbered, they wouldn't need to retreat, they would need to fight. Caleb was capable of holding his own and Pamplemousse was ready to unleash his vengeance on whatever Rockets may be lying in wait.[break][break]

Trusting the Lokix's scouting ability, Pamplemousse ordered Jack's Mismagius to dim her light so that it would not reveal them to whoever or whatever may be lying in wait on the other side of the passage. Keeping close to Caleb, he attempted to mimic the man's silent movements as they crept forward.[break][break]

Adrenaline surged when Caleb pointed out the potential threat ahead of them. "Hold them," he murmured to the Mismagius. Eerie chanting echoed in the cave as a magical leaf storm was conjured around the man, the razor sharp leaves circling close enough to limit most movement.[break][break]

"Don't move or I will use lethal force," Pamplemousse commanded coldly as he stepped from behind the boulder and into the cavern.

"Jack, wait - "[break][break]
Before he could do anything about it, the other Ranger stepped out from their hiding place and approached the figure. His Mismagius immeidately surrounded the poor man with a barrage of MAGICAL LEAF. Caleb scrambled to follow, realizing quickly that this wasn't a Rocket, but a researcher attempting to gather up a pile of broken equipment on the ground.[break][break]
The man looked up, terror plain on his face (which had gone quite pale), and immediately dropped the clipboard he'd been holding in favor of putting up both hands in surrender. He wore a badge with the Slateport University emblem on it.[break][break]
"Jack! Back off, man. He's not a threat. Looks like he's some kind of professor...?"[break][break]
Caleb and Nox approached, and the man turned to look at him with a grateful expression.[break][break]
"Tha - that's right, sir. Professor Morrow, department of Biology at Slateport University. My scanning equipment was destroyed when the island began to sink. I was just trying to recover what I could from my latest experiment in this cave..."[break][break]

Fixing Professor Morrow with a cold stare, Pamplemousse strode over to stare at the equipment. If he noticed the research flinch as he approached, he gave no reaction. Instead he focused on the broken equipment.[break][break]

"Then let's grab your data and let's going moving," he said, voice emotionless now after nearly slicing the man to ribbons moments earlier.[break][break]

With rough but purposeful movements, Jack began wrenching open flaps, panels, and anything else that looks like it could be pulled. Each time he came across a hard drive, he reached in to disconnect it before shoving it into Morrow's nervous hands.[break][break]

"Come help, Caleb," Pamplemousse called sternly to his partner without looking up from where he was dismantling the equipment.

"Ca - careful!" Morrow sputtered, still on his knees. Caleb glared at Jack, baffled by the careless way the other man was riffling through the professor's things. joining him, Caleb began to recover what looked viable, gathering everything up into an orderly pile for the academic.[break][break]
"I think that's everything," he surveyed. With the flick of his wrist, he released Daisy from her Pokeball. The Dragonite yawned, stretching her wings and cocking her head at Caleb.[break][break]
"Daisy will help carry your stuff," he explained to Morrow. "And you can ride on her back, allright?"[break][break]
He helped the trembling man climb up onto the Dragonite. Then he turned back to Jack.[break][break]
"I think we're done here," he suggested, his own voice edged with frost now. Whatever was going on with his friend, it didn't forgive his harsh treatment of an innocent civilian. Caleb would have to look into it more, later.[break][break]
"Lead us out."
