it is very late at night. absinthe can't sleep: obviously, if the bags underneath her eyes are any indication. when she can't sleep, she usually works in the lab, but tonight she has exhausted the work in her lab, and her hands tire of the chemicals. in this case, she is left only with her laptop.[break][break]

usually, in desperate times, absinthe makes music in a DAW. right now, though, the DAW is updating, and doing so very slowly. to pass the time, absinthe finds herself staring at an odd screen prompting her to choose a class. a video game, featuring a... strangely familiar face.[break][break]

hmm. odd.[break][break]

absinthe selects the "wizard" option. it sounds the most suitable.

ah, it knows her name. absinthe's eyes narrow. probably taken from her computer, which is connected with her real name, right?[break][break]

she's sure it's nothing. absinthe ignores it like any good horror movie protagonist would. there's a much more important decision to be made, afterall. where should she go?[break][break]

absinthe's eyes catch on the level known as seviper ruins and she picks it immediately, almost without thinking. what can she say? she likes snakes. it reminds her of her very own trypsin, perhaps her only real friend.

this whole thing is seeming a little bit familiar to absinthe at this point. the sight of the yanmega particularly scratches at the back of the chemist's mind as deja vu slowly flutters in and propagates therein. has she... met this lady before?[break][break]

regardless, the choice of a ride is an easy one. absinthe can't help but want to ride the skuntank, the poor, misunderstood creature. she chooses the option quickly, confident in her choice. she can't help it. she has a poison pokemon bias.

"You're a brave one!" Shalin remarks at the choice of riding on her giant Skuntank. "But I like that about you! Most people think Skuntank always reek, but they don't! Did you know they can use FLAMETHROWER to burn their excess musk off?" she asks as the Skuntank bounces the two of you around a bit more harshly than an equine would. The species was clearly not meant to be ridden, but after a while, it's not as rough as you thought! It might even be fun![break][break]

After a wild ride across the wetlands, the two of you at the entrance to a wide, but dark, cave tunnel shaped like the wide-open maw of a Seviper. She sends out a female Pyroar and gets on its back, its mane providing dim light to a good distance out and bright light immediately around her. "Let's take a look around!"[break][break]

The cave appears to split in two: a left fork that winds around a corner, and another short tunnel straight ahead. At the entrance of the tunnel are two large box torches, long since extinguished.[break][break]

there's an odd comfort in this strange little game, though absinthe isn't sure why. maybe it's the familiarity of it all, or the way it seems to understand her choices in a way that feels almost personal. either way, she finds herself getting drawn in, despite the unsettling coincidences.[break][break]

now, faced with the choice of two tunnels, absinthe takes a moment to think. it's probably dark inside of the belly of the beast, so she immediately comes to the conclusion that it would be best to ensure they have the light to see within.[break][break]

absinthe decides to select one of the lower options: Ask Shalin to use her Pyroar to light the torches.

You ask Shalin to have her Pyroar light the box torches one at a time. After both are lit, you hear the sound of grinding stone from the north. A secret path has opened to the north, which she is eager to follow. Not wanting to get separated so soon, you tail her and her Pyroar mount.[break][break]

True to the cave's name, it is home to a large population of Seviper, none of which look too happy to see your intrusion! Furthermore, additional travel north is made impossible by an iron gate whose door is under lock and key. Several of the bladed snakes slither toward Shalin and her Pyroar, raising their tail blades in an effort to attack them![break][break]

absinthe narrows her eyes as the seviper hoard advances. poor things. they're probably just hungry. this desolate barren can hardly support such a large colony.[break][break]

but, in a dog eat dog world, empathy comes by the dime. only the rich can afford to be kind, and absinthe is no rich woman. she sighs as she prepares to choose her selected option, although pauses just before. if she fights head on, what will it look like? will she be using pokemon? she doesn't see any user interface indicating the pokemon team she's brought with her.[break][break]

oh well. only one way to find out. absinthe selects fight the horde head on.

that went surprisingly well. absinthe had certainly expected more of a fight from the snake pokemon, but is, of course, not complaining about the ease with which they were dispatched. satisfied with this outcome, absinthe figures it's high time to begin exploring some other vistas within the cavern. she has a small key to find, after all.[break][break]

certain that shalin can handle herself, as she has for the majority of this game, absinthe instead chooses to STAY HIDDEN AND FIGHT WITH RANGED ATTACKS. it seems more useful for the character she's chosen to go with anyways: a wizard need not run to the front and start waving a sword as if it might do anything.[break][break]
