This wasn't exactly what Eddie had envisioned doing when he first decided to help clean up Sea Mauville, but hey, there were worse ways to spend an afternoon. Now if only these Slowpoke would get a move on. [break][break]

Little pink bodies marched slowly across tall grasses, with one or two of their shell-clad brothers looming over or ambling alongside. They had to be relocated to a different part of the preserve, it seemed, as their former home had fallen into the sea. A Chesnaught and a Hisuian Liligant nearby seemed to have no trouble directing the parade of otter-like Pokemon to their new home, but a few stragglers were really slowing this whole venture down. [break][break]

Eddie was currently holding one such Slowpoke like a baby, one hand holding the Pokemon's rump as it leaned against his chest, its hands and head resting atop his shoulder, with the other hand rubbing the Pokemon's back soothingly (Eddie figured this whole migration business was stressful enough as it was). He frowned though as he looked down and saw a couple more Slowpoke slowing from a crawl to a full-on stop; there weren't arms enough to carry all of them. [break][break]

Suddenly, the Pokemon in his arms perked up its head and loosed a soft cry of acknowledgment. Eddie whirled around, realizing that he now had company.

"Woah! Little guys, where are you guys goin'?"

[break][break] The voice belonged to none other than the League's Head Ranger, ollie morales.

[break][break] Ollie had been checking up on all the various Ranger groups that had been dispersed to the location for the last hour, making sure that everything was going along smoothly. It was one of the first big operations that the Rangers had in a long time. It was pretty bad timing too, considering everything that was going on with the war preparations currently; in other ways, it was also convenient. It allowed him to have a grand sweep of how all the Rangers were doing in their training.

[break][break] He leaned down, picking up the Slowpoke who was staring up at him with wide eyes in his arms, giving it a little scratch between the ears. It was then that he realized that he wasn't alone. He blinked.

[break][break] "Oh hey, Eddie! You're here." He grinned. The water sloshed around his boots as he walked up to the other, using one arm to hold the Slowpoke and the other to raise his arm in a fist-bump in greeting. "You're the one helping these guys out, huh. How's it going?"

[break][break] He whistled sharply, signaling for Hops to shoot the wooden barrier that was in the way, barring their entry into the next corridor.

“Oh shit!” Eddie grinned bright with recognition, “Fancy meetin' you here, Mister Head Ranger!” [break][break]

He returned the fist-bump of greeting, though he quickly returned that hand to hold the Slowpoke, who had decided to lean forward and reach for Ollie, nearly slipping out of Eddie's grasp. Go figure; even the Pokemon seemed to want him, [break][break]

“Not so bad.” [break][break]

Eddie turned his head when he heard that whistle and the few thundering footsteps of the Blastoise. A forceful jet of water blasted a nearby barricade to smithereens; when the torrential flow let up, Eddie's Chesnaught briefly left his post as Slowpoke chaperon to pick up and toss aside what little debris remained in their path. [break][break]

The soldier looked back down just in time to see another Slowpoke of the hoard cross his path, peer up at him, and flop down on top of his shoe-clad feet. Eddie sighed with some exasperation, [break][break]

“'Cept these little guys don't seem like they're in too big a hurry,” he chuckled, nodded at the Slowpoke now snoozing at his feet, “Got any tricks up yer sleeve that might help 'em get a move on?”

"I told you," Ollie said, with a roll of his eyes. "Call me Ollie!"

[break][break] He moved to bump the other's shoulder in a friendly gesture, pausing as he jostled the small Slowpoke in his group. "Woah there, Buddy," he soothed, patting the nervous pokemon. "I gotcha. Don't ya worry."

[break][break] As they continued and found another little guy in the middle of their path, Ollie couldn't help but burst out into laughter.

[break][break] "Man, where are they coming from? They're croppin' up faster than a duster in the barn."

[break][break] "Here - hold em, will you?" he said, moving to push his Slowpoke into the other man's arms. Ignoring the fact that perhaps it may have been too much to juggle at once. He reached into his belt then, choosing his TROPIUS, who appeared in a massive burst of light. The smell of something delectably sweet filled the other, alongside the large pokemon's lofty banana leaves — it was a bit of a tight fit in the current corridor, but large enough.

[break][break] Using SWEET SCENT, the Tropius led the way down the path, and the wild Pokémon, drawn by the honeyed aroma, eagerly toddled along behind.

“Dunno; if I didn't know any better, I'd think they were reproducing by budding, or somethin'.” [break][break]

Eddie laughed a little too, even as the a second Slowpoke was placed into his arms. He adjusted himself and his otter-like companions to be able to carry the both of them comfortably, each one slung halfway over each of the soldier's broad shoulders. It kinda reminded Eddie of trips he had taken to Mesagoza, and of trying to wrangle his little twin nephews, [break][break]

“Oooh, I see what yer cookin' up!” [break][break]

Even in the crowded space of the Slowpoke-filled thoroughfare, there was enough room for the Tropius to find its footing and fill the air with something sweet and floral and fruity. Eddie found himself subconsciously following the Fruit Pokemon, too, until he suddenly shook his head and laughed again, [break][break]

“Keiko, give 'em a hand.” [break][break]

A Hisuian Liligant, who had been eyeing a nearby Slowbro with some exasperation, was happy to follow alongside the Tropius. She lent her fellow Grass-type a HELPING HAND as their procession continued in earnest. [break][break]

Eddie shifted his shoulders a little, even as the Slowpokes draped over each voiced their protestations, and he followed the Head Ranger and the toddling pack of pink Pokemon down the path, [break][break]

“So, what're you up to these days? Last couple'a months have really been somethin'.” [break][break]

The older man's expression shifted, almost imperceptibly. Dark brown eyes narrowed just slightly and the little lines around them were etched with concern, [break][break]

“You stayin' safe out there?”

"Gee, could you imagine?" He let out a laugh, shaking his head. That almost sounded scary.

[break][break] He tried to imagine a second Slowpoke head appearing next to the first, like the way potatoes did in the field.

[break][break] Ugh.

[break][break] Luckily, they were able to pave the path forward with the help of their pokemon and Ollie paused for a moment, snickering, as he watched one of the young Slowpoke nearly walk into a wall. A gentle nudge from the Tropius set the baby pokemon on the appropriate path.

21. Use technology to assist in the operation.

[break] "Oh, just busy as all ever," Ollie said, glancing down at the GPS-tracker on his PokeNav. Just to make sure that they didn't get lost wandering around Sea Mauville's flooded corridors — though, he could think of worse things than being trapped underground with Eduardo Hisakawa.

[break][break] He smirked.

[break][break] "Aw, you worried about me, Eddie?" He nudged him. "I think I should say that about you — a little Staravia told me you have your hands full over at Dewford."

[break][break] From Ranger reports and intel provided by Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, the damage that ROCKET and Regice had done on the coastal town was no small effort. Especially in addition to all the work that was being done in preparation for the war.

A little of Eddie's tension left him in one short, tired chuckle, [break][break]

“I'm tough as nails, Ollie.” [break][break]

He tilted his head back toward the Head Ranger and flashed him a lopsided grin, [break][break]

“Gonna take a little more than some overgrown ice cube ta take me out.” [break][break]

Though he wish he could have said the same for the island's infrastructure, and for the few casualties the town experienced. Eddie's grin faded fast; he shook his head and turned his attention to his Decidueye, [break][break]

“Gen, mind runnin' on up ahead? I wanna make sure nothin' gets the jump on us.” [break][break]

The Hisuian Pokemon nodded curtly, tipping the brim of his hat-like feathers before he melted away with a SHADOW SNEAK. Ollie could surely handle himself if some new ugly thing decided to rear its head, but Eddie felt a sudden streak of protectiveness at the thought of some person or Pokemon trying to do the Head Ranger harm, [break][break]

“Lemme know if yer ever in that neck'a the woods,” Eddie suddenly blurted out, “Around Dewford, that is. I ain't gonna ask ya ta help clean up that mess, but I wouldn't mind the company.”

"Ah, that's right," Ollie returns with teasing grin. "Look at all those muscles — how coulda I doubted ya, Eddie?"

[break][break] One who didn't know Ollie any better would've said he was flirting with the other man. Or maybe that was just how he was in general. Either way, Ollie enjoyed the time that he spend with Eduardo Hisakawa, and appreciated even more the fact that the other man was in one piece, especially after all that went down at Dewford.

[break][break] His thoughts flickered over to @navy and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, and wondered if he should connect with them to see how the rebuilding of the coastal town was going on these days.

[break][break] "Of course! I still gotta go by to check in on Beau, ya know, every now and then." His head tilts. "Oh hey - by the way - you know Beau? Maybe the three of us could go out for lunch one of these days!"

[break][break] The end of the tunnel was probably in sight by now, but Ollie found himself not wanting to leave.

Eddie beamed, practically glowing, when one of his favorite people mentioned another one of his favorite people, [break][break]

“You talkin' about Beau Fontaine? 'Course I know 'em, he's a real good guy.” [break][break]

Suddenly, some of the Slowpoke at Eddie's feet began to pick up their pace, finally realizing that their destination was in sight. Eddie couldn't blame them when his eyes landed on a new expanse of sparkling water and lush sea-grasses that had somehow escaped the devastation that much of the reserve had faced, [break][break]

“An' lunch sounds good! Been dyin' ta fire up the grill fer months now.” [break][break]

Half because it was just the sort of thing you did this time of year, and half because of a promise Eddie had once made on a crowded cot on the Megalopolan prison ship. He found himself smiling a little at the thought as he gently put down the now scrambling Slowpokes in his arms and watched them trundle hastily off after their brothers, [break][break]

“But be prepared, 'cause anythin' I'm cookin' is gonna knock yer fuckin' socks off.” [break][break]

The statement was punctuated by a boyish smile and a wink, and Eddie suddenly felt lighter than he had in weeks.
