chaos descends upon petalburg, the first of which being the oppressive fire started by dorian westcliff that spreads around and through the city, threatening to burn them all beyond the border.[break][break]

this is not his city but he would be damned if he stood by without intervening. the time for inaction has long passed; now, the rustboro gym leader places himself in the thick of it.[break][break]

"do your best to stop it from spreading, jelly!"[break][break]

urgency rings in his voice as he watches politoed's drizzle wash over the area. it reminds him briefly of the time nabi park had almost burned down rustboro, but the comparison feels pale in the face of this.[break][break]

[break][break]the building next to them begins to collapse, spitting embers from its splitting façade. aaron raises his arm instinctively, but he's far enough away from it to be out of harm's way. he stalks toward cian, closing the rest of the distance between them before the universe can invent a new way to drive them apart. [break][break]because nothing can keep the dumb duo from linking up except a noodles afk era. [break][break]"yeah. shit's bad."[break][break]he used to spend a lot of time in petalburg woods. seeing it now, succumbing to fire and ruin, makes him feel some type of way. he tries not to dwell on it, as he does with most despairing thoughts, and nods as cian changes plans. [break][break]"we got this. let's hit up that building and make sure no one's in it." [break][break]he takes a breath through thick cloth, gathering his courage, then marches toward the building that's on the verge of crumbling to ash. his feraligatr paints the outside with gouts of water, turning fire to smoke and solid walls to soggy, fragile pillars of wood.

"what are we, firefighters?" though he had said it as a joke, he knows the role now falls to them to run into the burning building with nothing but adrenaline to help them. "...add it to the list."[break][break]

pulling the scarf around his neck over his nose, he takes a deep breath for no reason other than to gather the courage to follow his friend through the flames.[break][break]

"shit, shit, shit."[break][break]

it's not only the heat they have to contend with but also the lack of air. his breath immediately catches in his throat, cleared by a cough, but he knows time is against them.[break][break]

guided by his politoed, cian moves in the opposite direction. they can cover more ground split up, surely.[break][break]

wood continue to creaks, masking the muffled cries from upstairs. for now, the rustboro gym leader does not hear anything beyond his own breathing.

"i dunno how we're single, bro," he sighs, cracking a lighthearted joke to break up the unbearable tension in petalburg city. "our list is stupid long."[break][break]adrenaline and dumb bravery blunts the anxiety surging through him. as he walks under an unstable, ember-spitting ceiling, he imagines lilycove being under attack instead. he imagines his sisters being in trouble. the thought fuels his steps through smoke-choked rooms, eyes watering from heat and smog. [break][break]and then, through the shattered windows, he sees a massive sandstorm obscuring the trees. [break][break]"uhhh, cian?" he calls out. his pikachu squirms out of his backpack and races for the stairwell. "think we're fucked, bro."[break][break]nevertheless, he follows his pikachu's urgent calls, straining to hear until a muffled cry passes through collapsing walls. [break][break]"hey! somebody's in here!"[break][break]he bounds up the stairs heroically. one, two, three, four — then one of his sneakers goes straight through the weakened wood.

the same way aaron imagines lilycove, cian sees rustboro engulfed in flames and being brought to ruins. for a city that prides itself on its history, it would be painful to lose what it holds most dear.[break][break]

hearing his name over the sound of splintering wood, he turns in time to see the familiar quick attack-spamming pikachu race up the stairwell likely to quick attack something up there.[break][break]

"yeah?"[break][break]

baffled by his own stupidity, cian quickly realizes and races up the stairs as well with his politoed hopping closely beside him, though it falls slightly behind when it misses a step or two.[break][break]

"wait, you idiot!"[break][break]

calling out too late, one of aaron's foot goes through the weakened wood, and cian isn't able to stop in time. so, he jumps over the man, clipping the back of aaron's head slightly with his foot.[break][break]

when he lands, he quickly turns back and offers his hand. politoed does the same as well, croaking loudly.[break][break]
