Oh, that was interesting. She had a theory that Avatars and those that had experienced space-time rifts had a different interaction with infinity energy and consequently had more control in the dream realm than others. The idea, though, that the patron itself could pick doors... why, that warranted study. [break][break]

The odds of getting him in a study again were low. [break][break]

"More real," she repeated slowly, chewing on the thought like gum. "What makes it feel real?" [break][break]

She considered his question. She knew little of him, but it would do her no favors to pretend otherwise. "I know little of him. I believe he has some sort of manipulation over space." How much of the DRK could she reasonably reference? Unfortunately, she did have minimal grasp on the Triad.

She had yet to meet Father Winter. From the sound of Matias' earnest sharing, she wasn't sure she was interested in it, even if he had special prowess to show people hyper-realistic dreams. [break][break]

She tried to read between the lines. "Do you think you are carrying parts of these recent dreams with you?" Was it a bad thing? She didn't have a complete transcription of his dream with Elisabeth; the corrupted data had hindered most of it, and it was nearly impossible to parse meaning of what was left. A picnic, a oil slick, an earthquake. What any of it meant, she couldn't say. [break][break]

"Are you here for advice, or for a cure? I must warn you, a regular sleep study will not reveal much - those are primarily for REM data and apnea evaluations. If you are asking me to look into your dreams... it will require my Musharna." Not strictly illegal, no different from an effective dream eater mechanically. Certainly nothing to advertise publicly, of course.

He's looking forward. Anyone who seeks to improve has some crumb of optimism, some degree of hope in themselves or in the tentative promise of tomorrow. [break][break]

She wishes, not for the first time, that the dream study data had been uncorrupted; what she could gleam of it had suggested that he and Elisabeth existed like a tumultuous, tipping scale... except the scale wasn't moving at all, in reality. Two people stubbornly pulling each other together while forces, including an internal and wretched one, pulled them apart, too. [break][break]

No use crying over spilled milk, she supposed. That he didn't outright reject the notion suggested a possibility of getting into his head again, anyways. "If the nature of the upset of your mind is internal, likely subconscious, then pulling it out and examining it directly is the best possible cure. Otherwise, you must consider pills or meditation... remedies for the symptoms, not the disease." [break][break]

She allowed her Musharna to come to rest on the desk between them, looking sleepy and uninterested. Likely, she was. "She has the ability to create a dreamy terrain, one that keeps you in a semi-waking state while your subconscious dreams are projected, not unlike light projected onto clouds or onto a screen." It wouldn't hurt, but she had done it so few times that she couldn't speak much to its capacity to help.[break][break]

"It is an open offer, but I insist you do not advertise it. I believe this special ability of my Musharna is rare, and I do not want public scrutiny before I have fully understood the mechanics of it." Experimental, indeed. But if he were haunted in his waking and sleeping hours, how long could he lose sleep before his impaired judgement costed him his life?

Pet was overstating things, she felt, but if he had offered, she would have accepted. [break][break]

Her mind raced at his question, but she believed, ultimately, he would have approached her differently if he really thought she was a Rocket. Minimally, if he did believe it, he still wanted her help. She was confident his interest in her potential to fix things was genuine. [break][break]

She would do him one favor in return for his research potential, and that was to tell the truth. "My allegiance lies with the scientific endeavor I have dedicated my life to. It may not be the answer you want to hear, but it is the truth. Everything that happens in this world is immaterial to me so long as I can find my way into the dream realm." Who cared how far-fetched the idea was. It would solve everything. [break][break]

"My allegiance is with the alternate reality I seek to join, Matias. Examining what your mind has been experiencing lately will bring me closer to that goal, and that makes you a dear ally of mine." She spoke slowly, aware this looked crazy to anyone unfamiliar with the unbridled purpose an obsession filled you with.

Detrimental. Ah, he was helplessly interesting to her. If he wasn't so visible in their region, so known, she'd have considered locking him in her laboratory. As it was, he would have to maintain his will and autonomy. [break][break]

"Between us?" She supposed she had few others to tell. After all, she couldn't publicize most of her work because of how it contradicted moral boundaries that the majority of the scientific community upheld. Her only confidant, Lulu, wouldn't need to know the specifics, either. In fact, Ameena had been guarded about the sleep study information she shared because of Cillian's admission into the study. [break][break]

It was an easy, honest acceptance, then. "Of course. I have no need to profit off what I find, and the scientific gains are unethically gotten, so I cannot share them." What she'd said earlier about having no need to capitalize off of his subconscious was still true. [break][break]

Musharna floated higher, prepared to coat the room with her special dream mist. "Please, close your eyes and try to empty your mind... if you are certain this is what you want." If he was, her dreamy terrain would begin to fill the room, allowing visages of what plagued his subconscious to come to life.

Ameena is a stark outlier in the dreamy mist that surrounded her office. The mist created visions and projections from the subconscious, everything filtered by the eye of the beholder, in a manner of speaking. She did her best to keep her mind blank lest she contribute her own projections and muddy the experiment. [break][break]

The woman who appeared was one she did not recognize. It was obviously not Elisabeth. The woman was gorgeous; perhaps she really looked like this, or she was put on a pedestal in his mind and rendered far more heavenly than she could appear in reality. [break][break]

She fought herself to keep from painting what she was seeing with her own expectations. She was expecting Elisabeth, she was expecting to see what was bothering him, and she was expecting something obsessive. The study had hindered the chemical responses that gave people inhibitions and kept their desires in check. What consumed his thoughts?

Gently, softly, so as not to jerk him out of his relaxed mindset, she prompted, "What are we seeing, Matias? What are you chasing?"

Compartmentalizing and keeping her perspective neutral is something she practiced in the military and most certainly perfected a dream researcher. But this is no normal circumstance. She finds herself with more questions than usual, and she struggles to keep herself silent. [break][break]

Acceptance is a common desire. But Hoenn needing to wake up... what did he know? [break][break]

"Why have you conjured her up, Matias? What does your sleeping mind need to work out?" Think of Elisabeth she wants to utter, but she knows better. She can't give away the game. She can't try to influence his dream - the conscious mind did not command an unconscious (unhearing, unsensing) mind... and his subconscious was feeding him what it had been chewing on, all this time. He needed to work through whatever this was.
