Shalin's sleep was restless, plagued with nightmares about the Battle at Petalburg and other "what if" scenarios. Had she kept her position in Rustboro and Elise Calcifet taken the Petalburg Captain's seat, would she have wound up a prisoner of war instead? What kind of condition was Petalburg in? Were all of her Pokémon okay? Her Romping Grounds were well-known in Hoenn; was Rocket using her Pokémon against her?

With no way to contact the outside world, she would never have a frame of reference while Cillian Quinn and the rest of Rocket held her ransom.

Hearing the buzz of her ward's door, the prisoner walked up to the left side of her bars to see who was passing through. Expecting it to be Dorian, figuring he was excited to brutalize her once more, she would be surprised to see just who it was that wanted her attention...

SHADOW MIASMA precedes him. It's something Shalin's seen before, though she hadn't made the connection at the time. Had probably assumed it was a SMOKESCREEN, if she'd seen it at all.[break][break]

Because Finn was harmless, right?[break][break]

It's not Finn who visits her in her cell, but Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

"Hello, Shalin."[break][break]

His voice is deep, a rumble of thunder in his throat. It echoes softly through the space like a threat.[break][break]

"And how is it that you've wound up here?" He leans against the wall opposite the bars of her cell, well out of reach of grasping hands. "Meddling where we shouldn't, were we?"

Shalin grabbed her cell's bars for support as Cillian Quinn greeted her in a voice totally different from Finn's. "And who has the pleasure of mocking Petalburg's Captain today?" she snarled, mustering the strength to spit toward the Avatar and fall woefully short. It was all she could do to express her disapproval of the lack of humanity she was treated with behind enemy lines.

"Defending Petalburg. My people," she replied through grit teeth. "I couldn't abandon them. It was my sworn duty to protect them. A duty I found to the bitter end to uphold." With how many times she had slept, she was sure at least a week had passed by now. "It's only a matter of time before they come knocking on your door. But why me? I'm just a Ranger. We don't have the levels of access others in the League do."

Was it because they needed to leave Petalburg leaderless to take over the town? Was it because Rocket wished to use Shalin as leverage for another, much more sinister goal? There were a myriad of reasons Rocket could have wanted a mere Captain in their employ. Her Sygna Suit could be one of them... and it was one Cillian was more than familiar with.

Shalin Nariya has always struck Cillian as a WILD CARD, not invested in either side as much as she was in her adventures. Yet everyone had their loyalties. He cannot speak to whether or not she's a good person, but he knows for certain that she's better than him. Most are.[break][break]

He retains his composure even as she spits at him, sidestepping.[break][break]

"Perhaps wait for me to answer the question before you decide to antagonize me, hm?" Stupid girl. "Some call me Harbinger, but my name is Cillian Quinn. I would hardly call this a pleasure. I'd have preferred you stay out of Rocket's way, but..."[break][break]

Why me? They always wondered the same thing. "You didn't."

Since ascending to the position of Captain, Shalin had become more invested in the League. In her mind, both were evil. But the League was the lesser of the two evils, which governed her stance in the war. Plus, Rocket had attacked her city, her home. Knowing Elise, Shalin felt she never would have been able to survive these conditions. The abuse she suffered in just her first few days within the Rocket prison was unbearable for most, whether physical, mental, or emotional.

"Would you rather Captain Calcifet than me?" she asked. "She was to transfer to Petalburg, but I requested a transfer there the very month the war broke out. I imagine Petalburg doesn't fare too well. But entertain this. How are her citizens?"

Cillian holds her EMERALD gaze with unflinching gold.[break][break]

"Yes," he says of Elise Calcifet. For more reasons than one. He liked Shalin. She was fun, and their death-defying adventures provided a rush like no other.[break][break]

Shalin questions him about Petalburg, and his eyes narrow.[break][break]

"I wasn't stationed in Petalburg. Sootopolis is my concern." Memories of the compromise in Sootopolis still sting. It had been under Declan's order, couldn't truly be considered a loss, but it felt like one. "But we'll treat Petalburg as we did Sootopolis: fairly, so long as we are allowed to rule unopposed. No sensible citizens need lose their lives or their homes."[break][break]

But many already had. Cillian and Tempest Quinn have commandeered an abandoned property as their home-away-from-home while Sootopolis rebuilds. Kanto Rocket prove eager to spill blood and stake claim.[break][break]

He mentions none of that. He owes her nothing.

"Rule unopposed" was all Shalin needed to hear; in her eyes, Petalburg's Ranger force had been dissolved. Any Rangers who managed to escape would need to be transferred to other cities. "Then there's no point to calling myself Captain anymore, is there?" she mused. "And what of Petalburg Woods? Though if you were stationed in Sootopolis, I imagine you might not have been debriefed yet." Little did she know that Elise Calcifet and Captains of nearby cities had assisted with the evacuation. Many of her Pokémon had been moved to the Calcifet estate. Some, Thomas Benoit had taken on.

"Where is the man with the ancient, seven-eyed Pokémon?" the girl asked, unaware of howard slayte 's name. "I'm sure he would know a lot more about Petalburg's condition."

There's no mockery or sarcasm in his tone; it seems Cillian is completely serious, his gold gaze heavy on hers. It wouldn't be the first time they'd worked with a Ranger captain.[break][break]

Yet he knows it's a futile effort. She's far too pure.[break][break]

"I am an underboss. All intel passes my desk in time." He lights up a cigarette, the smoke twining with the darker miasma. As though out of habit, he tilts his head to the side so as not to exhale directly into her face. "That does not mean I'll pass it to you."[break][break]

It takes a moment to connect that she's asking after howard slayte. Cillian shakes his head.[break][break]

"You're bold to speak as though I'll summon him at your behest."[break][break]

He won't. He doesn't.

Shalin was far too pure. Rolling her eyes at the Underboss' offer, she scowled through her bloodshot, sleep-deprived eyes. "The girls will break me out of this place long before I pledge allegiance to you," she answered. There was a strong possibility that she would never see Petalburg Woods again. He must have known of her efforts to turn Fezandipiti against Rocket. There had to be a reason the poison-type had afforded her control for so long.

So Cillian was one of Rocket's top dogs. And yet... there was something familiar about him. His demeanor. "Like he would answer any of the questions I'd ask him." The longer she talked with the Underboss, the more a pang of anxiety built up inside her... to the point where she could no longer fully keep her thoughts within her mind. "Why do you.... sound so familiar?" she asked.
