The immediate, expected reaction made him grin. Almost as if he’d known she’d react with distaste at the prospect.[break][break]
“You know, I wouldn’t have admitted it at first, but the stunkies aren’t so bad. Usually.” Big emphasis on the usually. He had one personal stunky to Rook’s several, and it was probably the smelliest creature he’d ever encountered. But this was also an easy way to get Robin to admit altaria were the better alternative.[break][break]
Though he thought he had something maybe more soothing in mind.[break][break]
While he sifted through the fridge, the room fell into momentary silence. It didn’t seem either awkward or calm. More contemplative than anything else. Lam was processing the string of events from his own perspective as much as Robin was absorbing what she’d just done. But he didn’t think twice about offering to keep the ordeal between them. It came naturally.[break][break]
He didn’t expect the quieter response, however.[break][break]
“What? I don’t want it to set you back,” he commented, peeking at her over the top of the fridge’s door briefly. “It was a volatile situation. If anyone tells you they wouldn’t react similarly, they’re probably lying.” He shrugged and pushed the door shut. He didn’t think about it in terms of whether or not it would get him in trouble. And he didn’t feel guilty about the idea of withholding that information—it was her business. “Just be careful not to lose your head going forward. But I’m not like, a super goody two shoes, y’know.”[break][break]
It wouldn’t be the first crime he’d failed to report, though maybe the more violent one.[break][break]
“Incoming,” he warned before gently lobbing a soda can in her direction. Sidestepping into his office, he found the pokemon he was looking for—huddled up in her bed as expected. Scooping her up, Lam brought the sprigatito back to where Robin had settled herself. As if she could sense the remnants of tension, she hopped from his grasp and onto the couch. “That’s Clove. She’s probably better than even my altaria.”[break][break]
Her question drew a snort from him, and Lam rolled his eyes as he plopped down in a chair. "What? No way. I mean, go for captain, but you can't boss me around. I have seniority."

She accepted Clove the Sprigatito with open arms. It was nice to focus on petting the pokemon instead of looking at her hands or watching Lam closely for signs of judgement. She focused on deep breaths to help herself relax, but even with the fatigue that had hit her like a train immediately upon leaving her home, she still felt like she was in fight mode. [break][break]

"Really? You aren't a goody two shoes?" She looked at him incredulously. "I've always imagined you ate all the broccoli on your plate and reminded the teacher to collect homework." He struck her as someone nerd-aligned as a kid who grew out of it a little but still, like, fixated on DORK BIRD POKEMON... though she couldn't say as much to him without facing his wrath. She figured he could still come around to understand that ghosts were superior in every way. [break][break]

She giggled at his response to bossing him around. "You're mega old but I'll still be like, your commanding officer. Ollie'll make sure of it." He owed her for the Toxapex incident, anyways. "I'm gonna order you to visit some haunted houses with me and I'll label it uhhh an inspection." Not that that was within the purview of a Captain anyhow, but still.

As the sprigatito welcomed Robin’s attention and proceeded to make biscuits on her lap, Lam gave her a wounded look. “Okay, as a vegetarian, I’m literally obligated to be ‘pro-eat your veggies’. But just because I don’t commit crimes on the regular doesn’t make a goody two shoes.” In his mind, the term was reserved for the sorts of people who acted sanctimoniously about their morals and personal stances. To a fault. So maybe he sounded a little defensively riled up, but it wasn’t true anger or irritation.[break][break]
Maybe more the dismayed wondering of whether or not Robin really placed him in the same camp as those sorts of individuals.[break][break]
“Like, when my mom left, I was pretty angry. Maybe I didn’t act out as much as my little brother, because he had a harder time with it, but,” he shrugged. “Sure, okay. Nothing too rebellious.” He sighed, head lolling toward her as he flopped back in his seat. “But I’m not usually prone to outbursts either.” Any anger he felt, he kept in a tight little ball in his chest and then compartmentalized the hell out of it. And in any case, he was more prone to anxiety instead. Self-blame.[break][break]
Y’know, all that fun stuff.[break][break]
“But my point was more that this wouldn’t be the first time I haven’t turned someone over to PD, or reported something. I met my fiancé when he was trying to rob my boss.” Lam shrugged again. Noodle, sensing the attention that Clove was receiving with that unnatural feline intuition, pattered out into the living room. His little legs stretched luxuriously, and then the shinx scrabbled up to Lam’s lap for the same treatment.[break][break]
He didn’t mention the prior fall, and the rockets he’d let flee on the Mirage Island. Didn’t mention his conversation with The Visionary (Naomi Sato), and how a lot of those people stood on precarious, tired footing just the same as he did. He hadn’t reported them, either, in the end.[break][break]
Nothing was all that black and white to Lam, not really.[break][break]
But then Robin laughed and it felt like maybe some of the tension lingering in her began to shift and loosen. Lam smiled, relief filtering into his expression. “I’m literally not even thirty yet,” he pointed out flatly. “Ollie better not, he’s supposed to be my bro.” His arms folded smugly, “So that means I’ll still be superior rank, and instead of inspections, you’ll get to help me clean out the wingull roosts on the beach.” His smile widened, “For the environment. A ranger’s favorite cause.”[break][break]
If she actually asked him, though, he’d probably let her drag him to a “haunted house”, or whatever. Maybe.

He could argue all he wanted, but she considered him to be a goody two-shoes for life. His veggie consumption was not the only damning evidence! The teasing gave way to understanding as he explained a piece of his childhood. She knew little of it, which made her feel a twinge of guilt. How could she have known him so long and not asked about his family? "I think you're willing to rebel when it's necessary." She could recall their conversation about the announced 'six pokemon limit' vividly. [break][break]

"Your - Rook did that?" No way. Literally, no way. That was crazy. But, then, she figured Lam would be sappy enough to find love in a thief, especially if it was someone he had a hand in stopping. He saw the good in everyone. It made him easy to love. [break][break]

Shinx left to find affection from Lam, and Robin refocused her attention on Lam's teasing. She arched a brow. "The Wingull population's about to plummet," she warned, though she couldn't keep a smile off of her face for long. She yawned, then, unable to keep fighting the fatigue that chased her. "Um. Thanks again, Lam. I give you a lot of smack for being lame, but you make a good older brother." How embarrassing to say it out loud... but sleep came to claim her before she could retract it.

despite her refusal to believe him, lam would undoubtedly continue attempting to convince her of his coolness. someday, he was sure he could manage to prove it. a wan smile played at the corners of his mouth, though. the explanation wasn't meant to make robin feel bad - only get the point across that this was an arena he had particularly strong feelings in. always had.[break][break]
"right. and i think that's the important thing - knowing when to tell the difference." not being persuaded too extremely, one way or the other.[break][break]
a bark of laughter met her disbelief in the next turn. "i know, he hardly seems like a bad boy type, does he? but it's true." circumstance and need to survive had pushed rook into that lifestyle. had taught him to be clever and quick on his feet despite his softheartedness. "in a goofy kind of way," he amended quickly. but it had worked on lam, hadn't it?[break][break]
"not if i've got anything to say about it." even as lam teased her, he could see the exhaustion setting in. he shook his head, "don't worry about it. i'm glad i was there. and i'll always be there if you need it." sleep dropped over her quickly, though - he wasn't sure if she even registered his response. pulling himself up, he deposited the shinx with the snuggled up sprigatito.[break][break]
both little cats remained with robin, purring away as he draped a blanket from the back of the couch over her heavy shoulders and let her rest.
