after sootopolis, annalise returns to work as soon as she's cleared to do so, shortening her time off with the promise that she would stick to menial paperwork filing while she recovers. and she does — if only because she can't even get to her office without needing to stop and catch her breath. a pile of ranger reports wait for her at her desk like a mind-numbing consolation prize for surviving a war. [break][break]nothing.[break][break]the folder is set aside. its contents summarize a ranger's work at sea mauville. most of these, she realizes as she gives the files a cursory flip-through, are pre-war reports from sea mauville, delayed by everything that had come after. [break][break]nothing.[break][break]nothing worth sending up to ollie morales, at least. [break][break]no—[break][break]she stops skimming.[break][break]kyle lopez?[break][break]she sits up in her chair, fanning the report out in front of her on her desk. kyle lopez. at the sea mauville wreckage. but the kyle she's thinking of is dead; the man in this report is probably just unfortunate enough to share his name. she shakes her head, gathering the report into a neat pile, but insidious what if? hope stops her from setting the file aside. [break][break]she shouldn't chase ghosts but — she looks at the report again, this time for the ranger's name. a message is sent through the ranger network for him to come to mauville hq, marked urgent.

the inevitable time of war has come, much to the chagrin of many folks all across the region who may be hindered by the damage in some way - either physically or emotionally. silverio has heard the news of the its effects, in which some have rendered cities and their inhabitants critically wounded. the news poked and prodded his mind like a sharp needle stabbing at one's goosebump-infested skin. but what seems to hurt the paldean most of all was not the chaos left in the wake of a primal beast, and not the countless people that have been left worse for wear. what bothers him more than anything...[break][break]

is that he couldn't be there to help...[break][break]

the lives of several friends and allies may be changed for the worse, and silverio mainly blames himself for his inability to offer the support that they deserved during a time where hoenn - no, the world - needs them most. the man himself begins to wonder if he truly deserves to call himself a ranger. it's possible that airi, the one called 'navy', and all of the other compatriots he has gained in recent memory may think positively in that sense, but no. what's worse than making a bad impression on people...[break][break]

is making no impression at all...[break][break]

nonetheless, there's work to be done yet, such as reporting all recent activity. the actions in question? the relief efforts in sea mauville; silv had managed to maintain a personal record, listing names of the people he had helped and vice versa. upon submitting a report featuring one name in particular, it wasn't long before he receives a message through the rangers' communicative network. suppose that there was one finer detail that requires a hint of clarity.[break][break]

perhaps...[break][break]

questions begin to boil in the proverbial cauldron, that is, until arriving at headquarters in mauville to see who it was precisely that called for him. her! the captain that had blatantly shunned him for wanting to help keep her safe - more importantly, to help keep her alive. regardless, stern sapphire eyes tend to her.[break][break]

"hello, captain...i heard you were calling for me?"

indeed, there she stands...[break][break]

a tainted memory of his experience in sea mauville. all he wanted to do there was to help anyone and anything that was found to be under duress, and at the same time, learn more about the environment that is being endangered evermore as he speaks. one of the more bitter memories, rather. he can vividly recall the words that stood out to him the most. '...watch out for youself, too...'[break][break]

even now, those words continue to ring like a gong in his head, perhaps enough to potentially trigger a migraine. despite tides of war flooding over his conscience, he contemplates as to what could say or do to alleviate the pressure of now having to answer to the report he had given regarding his progress during his expeditions at the aforementioned venue.[break][break]

suppose that only the truth of what he saw, of what he had experienced is the only choice in this matter. as he claims a seat across from the captain, he scans the material in front of him. he can recall the words that are scribed here, for it was the paldea-born ranger himself who had written them. how much does he remember?[break][break]

"all of it, as if had happened yesterday. i was paired up with one of the volunteers to investigate an edifice on the verge of sinking, searching for hints of intel. kyle lopez , was his name. together, the two of us managed to rescue a scientist surrounded by a horde of toxapex, inside the building."[break][break]

is this enough information to go on, as if the report wasn't any indication; contrary to the captain's words, silverio and kyle were successful in their operation because they watched out for others...

annalise leans forward in her chair, engrossed by his recollection. it seems fantastical when she pictures it in her head: the kyle lopez, working among the volunteers at sea mauville, completely undetected even by the man sitting in front of her. she feels a pang of uncertainty, wondering if she made silverio come down here for nothing at all. [break][break]"good work on rescuing that scientist."[break][break]the praise is cursory, padding the conversation to come. [break][break]"what was he like? kyle?"[break][break]annalise doesn't know the former champion that well, but she remembers he had been pretty unhurried when they'd been trapped in interdream mist together. she lowers her eyes to her phone, fingers ghosting across the touchscreen in restless search of something, and misses the way the ranger report begins to float toward the ceiling. [break][break]"did he look like this guy?"[break][break]she holds her phone out, brandishing it like a detective badge. on the screen is a picture of kyle lopez, lifted off some "kyle lopez 2024" internet search.
