a new anomaly has appeared in the region: large, aggressive, glowing pokemon protecting swaths of territory, terrorizing rangers and local wildlife alike. a report of an absol sporting such a description prompts investigation. annalise doesn't know what to expect — she hasn't seen one for herself yet — but she feels like it won't be an easy mission. [break][break]"you're curious about all this too, aren't you?"[break][break]mew drifts beside her, unbothered by the danger that awaits them. it twist through the air, chiming in what annalise imagines is confirmation. she opens her mouth to say something else, to make conversation with a little god that can't say anything back, but the sound of a tree groaning drags her attention away. [break][break]"there it is," she murmurs, awed by the size of the luminescent beast as it moves through the treeline. and then, worryingly, she realizes its aggression is pinned somewhere else. on someone else. her breath hitches but her body auto-pilots, sprinting toward the conflict in fear that a civilian has stumbled into its territory. [break][break]mew flies ahead. with a raised paw, it conjures a bubble around the girl in the clearing, enveloping her and her pokemon in pink. annalise follows up the rear, arriving in time to watch the noble absol's scythe meet the resistance of the psychic bubble around yuina. the blade slides across its surface, but the protection holds until the attack ends.[break][break]"are you okay?" she calls out as the bubble pops. mew claps its paws together, amused by the destruction of its construct.

Nothing was making sense... The more instances of this Yuina found, the more of these Pokémon that she encountered, the more questions she had about what was happening. At first where she had found Pokémon that were oh so familiar... Pokémon that appeared as if they'd stepped out of the past itself just as she had... She was shocked and concerned all the same when she had encountered a Pokémon that did not descend from Hisui...[break][break]
That didn't take away from what she felt to be true... What she knew from her ancient texts and her own memory...[break]
'Ten Pokémon, the ancient hero's loyal retinue-- though these companions now are gone, their noble duty passes on to generations new...'[break][break]
She'd found the words in her book just when she and Basara had found the topic of her addled thoughts, an Absol that stalked through the grasses, awash in brilliant, golden light. Again, it was a Pokémon that didn't belong to those the legend said to have descended from... But then again, her readings for any sign of infinity energy gave nothing... It truly was as if it wasn't really there at all. But that didn't stop the canine from setting its sights on her, she had encroached upon its chosen territory and she was prepared to face it, not fight it, when pink flashed in front of her, surrounding her on all sides.[break][break]
"Basara what's happening," Yuina panicked in foreign word as the Absol charged, and whatever it was stopped the strike, but enraged the Pokémon that much more... It had been challenged...[break][break]
A voice called to her, and in the thousand yard stare of her amber eyes, Yuina found a young woman rushing towards her, a pink Pokémon lofting in the air, likely the one responsible...[break]
"No! What have you done? You challenged its territory and now...," Yuina couldn't finish her words before the canine howled, golden glowing eyes sharp as they turned to that which encroached.

[break][break]commanding mew still feels unwieldy to her, so her voice lilts like her words are a plea instead. the psychic-type nods and departs her side, flitting around the absol's head like a pink-furred gnat. the light-being thrashes, trying and failing to swat mew away. [break][break]once she's certain the noble pokemon isn't paying attention to her anymore, she addresses the other ranger. Again her position was compromised by someone else... All she was trying to do was study these Pokemon, she wanted to learn more, she needed to know everything that she could, but true to form everyone only saw aggression and danger...[break]
Just like those that would dare encroach upon the territory of an Alpha Pokemon and call it dangerous. There was no such thing as an infestation of bug type Pokemon in a forest they called their home... Humans were always the intruder.[break][break]
Basara glowered now at the Absol that had taken to aggression, but still the Kleavor did not move to attack, because Yuina had not yet given the word. They weren't meant to interfere with these Pokemon, they were learning this, but at this point it was far too late. And if this one too vanished...[break][break]
"No, you don't understand! They're not dangerous, they're sacred," Yuina tried to say, they were here for a reason, a purpose... as much as she was a professor for the history they stemmed from, Yuina was sure of it... It had to be?[break][break]
"We shouldn't challenge them in the territory they're surveying, they're here for a reason," she tried to say, but the Absol gave another howl before its energy surged, and then it was gone into a burst of light... The same one that she had seen time and again now... Vanished, before she could get any information.

"sacred?"[break][break]the word comes out so quietly that it's scarcely more than a movement of her mouth. maybe they're divine in some other place and time, but hoenn has never revered giant, glowing pokemon. at least, no mythology class she's ever taken has brought up anything like this.
[break][break]"i was protecting you! not trying to challenge it!"[break][break]the absol releases another hair-raising howl, then scatters into dispersing light. annalise holds a hand up, shielding her eyes from it. she blinks a few times, adjusting to the natural light of the clearing. mew floats above where the phantom had been, tail swishing as it stares down at the grass.[break][break]"you seem like you know a lot about these pokemon," annalise observes as she trudges up to inspect the spot. nothing remains. she lifts her gaze to regard yuina with curiosity. "do you have any guesses why they started showing up around hoenn all of a sudden?"

Again the pokemon disappeared... Not a single sign or indication that it had been there at all except for her own eyes seeing it in the first place, and the claw gouges that remained in the grass. Basara glowered as he moved closer to Yuina where she remained on the ground, she was distressed and disgruntled... Why was it so hard to make people understand that she just wanted to study them?[break][break]
"We'll find another Basara, soon," she offered first in foreign word as she helped herself up from the ground in using one of his augurate axes, she knew that her own Pokémon that too belonged to that far away place were... Displeased with all of this... This wasn't right...[break][break]
Brushing herself off, Yuina pulled out a notebook and began scrawling notes, something jumbled between written word and ancient characters before she glanced back up to the other woman. She had paid little mind to the notion that she had been protecting Yuina... She got in her way of being able to study one of the Pokémon, like many others had...[break][break]
"...I know enough to know that they're not an accident, and they're not a new phenomena. The way in which they're appearing, like apparitions passing through planes is what's most concerning. None of it makes sense...," Yuina returned, she still hesitated to put a name on the Pokémon, to call them what she was so certain they were... But it couldn't be anything else, not when she had seen one before in that far away place.

yuina is enigmatic. speaking in an unfamiliar language, scrawling in her notebook like she has to get something down before the memory evades her — she just seems in her own world, from annalise's observation. maybe it would make more sense to the ranger captain if she knew yuina was quite literally caught between two.[break][break]annalise frowns down at the spot where the phantom had stood as yuina unravels some of the mystery behind them. [break][break]"no, it doesn't," she agrees, scuffing the grass with her shoe like she might uncover some clue beneath the turf. like a viral meme, these phantoms have appeared out of nowhere and started showing up everywhere. [break][break]mew, meanwhile, drifts toward yuina as though coaxed along by a breeze, blinking big, inquisitive eyes at her and her kleavor. normally, its curiosity is satiated by a little bit of scrutiny, but the psychic-type lingers around her. [break][break]"you said this isn't new — but where have you seen it before?" annalise challenges, not unkindly. Lumbering around the area to survey things, take note of anything else, and keep an eye on their surroundings, Basara glanced again to the strange floating pink Pokemon before moving through the grass. At least for right now, there was no immediate threat, though he did note Yuina's... Discomfort of being perceived, as was often the case nowadays.[break][break]
Looking out into a far away distance for a moment, beyond the grass and beyond the trees, gathering her already addled thoughts to the best of her ability, Yuina blinked at the floating Pokemon that hovered above her open books. Certainly an odd thing... something she'd never seen before...[break][break]
The woman spoke up where Yuina glanced back to her notes... And how she wished sometimes the answer could be as simple as it was... She had in fact seen a Pokemon very much like this, only once before, in that far away place... The Lord of the Woods. If only the simple answer sounded like the reasonable one and not like a basket case.[break][break]
"I've read about them before, I'm a historian," Yuina returned, flipping through a page or two before she glanced down at the words before her.[break]
"...but bolts of light rained down one day, ten times they fell, ten times struck true upon ten Pokemon...," she read first, she was working on the linguistics of the language, the translations weren't as clear to her as they had been before... Like some of the words were different.[break][break]

For the most part it was easy to dismiss her own knowledge within the constructs of being a historian. No one felt the need to question what they weren't already familiar with... Yuina almost dreaded the day that she might meet someone who too studied ancient sinnoh and hisuian culture. It was likely their viewpoints might... differ from each other.[break][break]
"Hmm, well the culture as a whole mentions a handful of 'gods' or 'deities' that are poignant to them as the theory of creation has always been heavily rooted in Sinnohism," Yuina offered first, flipping through another set of pages as she continued to draw up some notes. Within the theory of creation, there were multiple forces of power that were referenced as important to the foundations of the culture.[break]
"Sinnohism, even modern teachings of Sinnohism believe in forces that created the constructs of time, space, emotion," she explained, though she stopped on a particular page before glancing back towards the woman, though she shifted a bit. The floating pink Pokémon cast a shadow over what she was reading as it hovered behind her...[break][break]
"But when looking over the legend of 'the ancuent hero', a legend heavily tied to Hisuian culture, 'the blessings' were bestowed by what they refer to as 'Almighty Sinnoh' or 'The Almighty Unknowable'," she was definitely a historian alright...[break][break]
As Yuina went on in what was an uncalled for history lesson, there was a flicker of green that flashed by the pink pokemon hovering above her. Bright blue eyes blinked at the other set of bright blue eyes as Celebi flitted in the air above Yuina, in front of the small Pokémon. Just as the pink Pokémon was perhaps interested in Yuina, the prince of the forest was interested in the pink pokemon as he reached out a small hand.

annalise knows hoenn mythology, but every other region's lore is hazy without an internet search to refresh her memory off of. sinnohism. hisui. almighty sinnoh. they're just words to annalise, but it's clear yuina cares a lot about the meaning behind them, so she tries her best to follow along. [break][break]a task made exponentially difficult as a flash of green catches her eye. she recognizes celebi from petalburg woods, helping people trying to contain a grafaiai outbreak. mew turns in the air to face the prince of the forest, regarding him with great interest. celebi stretches a hand out in greeting, or perhaps in comradery. [break][break]mew floats closer, appraising the gesture, then claps its paw into celebi's waiting palm. with an elated mewl, it tries to pull the fairy along in flight with it. [break][break]"wait — are you and celebi ... " together? she wonders, the question implied in the uncertain way it trails off.[break][break]it distracts her from their original conversation, this strangely mundane interaction between gods.

At the woman's sparse wonderings in regards to the myriad of otherwise useless facts that didn't matter to anyone save for Yuina, she looked up briefly from her book and notes as she blinked at her.[break]
"That's the concerning part if its true," she iterated, though she could still hardly say definitively that this was what they were experiencing. She was the only one studying the phenomena in the historical sense, everyone else was... Taking a more head on approach, and perhaps that was what was needed instead of trying to fabricate legend and lore from nothing more than a handful of scripts she was trying to translate.[break][break]
"The blessings were a gift of purpose, of reason, and it was not taken lightly. If 'The Almighty Unknowable' is looking for more sucecssors of its power... there has to be a reason," she explained, where she had otherwise not paid too much mind to the sprite Celebi flickering into view above her. She was used to the sprite's presence, she had been ever since she could feel him looping time on that ship.[break][break]
"Hmm," Yuina looked up again from her books, the woman's question was... merited perhaps. In truth, Yuina still didn't quite know what she and Celebi were to each other... she didn't know why he'd granted her the capability of looping time as he could, and she was sure he didn't have anything to do with the threads of space time she could feel pricking at her fingertips...[break][break]
"Celebi is to me no different than Basara is, my Kleavor. He is an ally, and I'd like to think we might be friends now," Yuina returned after a moment, glancing up at the two smaller Pokemon floating through the air together.[break]
Celebi was delighted, grasping the pink Pokemon's small paws in his own hands as they drifted through the air together. The sprite trilled as he turned over in the air, glancing then between the pink pokemon and the other human. It was friends with the other human it seemed too?[break][break]
"...I'm... sorry about earlier," she offered first after a moment, her eyes still cast upwards towards the two Pokemon, or perhaps even beyond as her finger tips flexed beneath the covers of her book, scratching at those miniscule threads. She hadn't meant to come across as accusing of the other woman, or that she had done anything wrong...[break]
"I'm Yuina? I don't think we've met before?"

"i just hope it's a good reason."[break][break]yet the optimism of her words falls flat as she winces, thinking about all the other anomalies in the region that have appeared — to the detriment of those that live here. [break][break]celebi's sudden appearance offers them welcome reprieve from their concerned theorizing. the two mythical pokemon seem to get along right away, holding onto each other and flying through the air in dizzying patterns. mew looks happy to play with a pokemon its own size, especially one that can keep up with it. [break][break]yuina explains her relationship with celebi, and it resonates with annalise. mew is her ally, though she hesitates to say they are bonded enough to be friends. it would be nice, though, to have a connection like yuina and celebi. to be companions, like annalise and her altaria.[break][break]eventually, once time and trust has strengthened their bond, they will be.[break][break]"mew and i are kinda like that," she says with a little nod. the conversation wanes with the distraction of the two pokemon floating around the clearing until yuina speaks up again, this time with an apology. [break][break]"i mean, we've definitely never been introduced before, but i swear i've heard your name before — you're a ranger, right?" there's something familiar about her name, either from being written in ranger reports or spoken casually by ollie morales. regardless, a smile tugs at the corners of her mouth. "i'm annalise henderson, ranger captain for mauville. i got some reports that these pokemon have been chasing people away in this area so ... that's why we ended up running into each other like this. sorry again."

"Whatever the reason... It can't be a coincidence that they've started to appear after Sootopolis and Petalburg. I don't have any proof for it, but the intuition is there...," Yuina offered before she blinked back towards the other woman. She named the other Pokémon Mew, the small pink one that flitted through the air with Celebi. Still, not a name she'd ever heard of before, but all things considered it was rather cute. And seemed very interested in Celebi.[break][break]
"It was only a matter of time before it might have vanished anyway, like the rest of them... You and Mew probably didn't interrupt much of anything," Yuina admitted, a bit frustrated that she had yet to be able to get particularly close to any one of the anomalous Pokémon appearing in the region. But it was no one's fault really, least of all theirs.[break][break]
Yuina gave her name, and there was a moment that she regretted doing so... Turned out this woman was a ranger captain, and now that she'd given her name Yuina recognized it. She was better at recognizing names and reports than she was faces, though it might do her some good to try and match more names to faces before running into anyone else.[break]
She hesitated to confirm the idea that she was in fact a ranger, wondering if she should have ever taken up the mantle in the first place given that she was just a puppet held by strings she would never know... Could she really call herself a ranger? And pretend that she was worth all of the good she tried to do when she was so closely tied to that woman...[break][break]
"Yeah, I've been following the reports too for the last couple of days. And every time I find one, there only seems to be more questions than answers, especially since I've run some tests and it seems like they have no infinity energy signatures at all, like they aren't even supposed to exist."
