within the cold submarine, a space had been set up. in the center of the room, there was a stainless-steel workbench, with sinks and gas outlets for bunsen burners; flasks, beakers, pipettes and test tubes; pH meters and centrifuges, and more.[break][break]

nearby was a polysomnography machine, an electromyogram and electrooculogram, and of course, the electroencephalogram as promised – each beside a bed with thick, sturdy straps.[break][break]

in the hall outside of all of that lingered the head scientist, eager to welcome in the room’s new resident. with the work of absinthe blackwood, a new chapter in the syndicate’s dream research would begin.[break][break]

before this day, absinthe had filled her notebooks with ideas of avenues she could take for this project. acetylcholine would be a good choice. galantimine would encourage lucid dreaming with the help of serotonin. but what could make it as reliable as needed? what is the missing piece?[break][break]

she hasn't yet come across it. perhaps seeing the lab would set her mind straight.[break][break]

as such, the woman with briefcase in hand is shown to her lab by a nervous grunt who keeps glancing back at her as though waiting for her to suddenly attack. absinthe ignores him until they reach her lab, at which point she turns to him. "dismissed," is all she says, and the grunt hurries away.[break][break]

she turns to the head scientist. "lulu," she murmurs in greeting. "i trust the lab is adequate."[break][break]

something in absinthe tells her that it is beyond adequate, and more in the realm of everything she's ever dreamed of, but she'll hold off on celebration until she can actually see the room.

the north wing of rocket’s submarine was a frightening place. it wasn’t surprising to see the grunt in absinthe’s company so spooked as they arrived. however, the commanding air about the woman and her dismissal raised an eyebrow, and drew a nearly indetectable smirk from the head scientist.[break][break]

“see for yourself,” she said, holding open the laboratory door. a bright light washed through the steel hall like some deceptive heavenly gate. there would be creation.[break][break]

“i can find you assistants, should you need them. as for test subjects, we have a vast variety of pokemon at our disposal, and a prison in the east wing – though i’m sure as you home in on success, people will be lining up to try it.”[break][break]

her heart flutters for the briefest moment as she steps into the lab. it is everything she has ever dreamed of. more space than she knows what to do with, and all the supplies she could ever need laid out in gleaming stainless steel.[break][break]

if absinthe were a weaker woman, she would cry.[break][break]

thankfully for everyone, she is not a weak woman.[break][break]

she enters, straightening her shoulders, and sets her briefcase down on a nearby countertop. "yes, assistants," she says shortly. "at least two, and well-trained. i will pull my test subjects from the prison."[break][break]

she meets lulu's gaze. "this is more than adequate," absinthe murmurs, and her voice is surprisingly genuine. "you've exceeded my expectations in every way. thank you."

“actually,” she reconsidered, ”not the prison – not unless they’re getting rid of someone. i want this to be very secret, especially in the beginning.”[break][break]

it was easy to locate subjects for such a thing. sadly, the world was full of lonely people who would not be missed if they spontaneously disappeared into thin air.[break][break]

”i’ll find you someone – unless you know of good candidates yourself.”[break][break]

the rest of what she’d brought there had been mostly from rocket’s prior endeavors. head scientists and others, faded into the past. the collection was impressive all the same, gleaming as good as new under bright light.[break][break]

absinthe’s gratefulness was met with a smile and a nod. “of course. as i said before, anything you need.”[break][break]

the click of her heels traveled around the room for a few steps before she turned.[break][break]

absinthe considers lulu's clarification, nodding. "very well," she says finally. "anybody will do. but it would be helpful if you could find those who have already experienced lucid dreams."[break][break]

the chemist looks around her lab again, her eyes taking in the pristine machines and resources laid out before her, unblemished by failure and time. it's almost a shame to mar them with use. almost.[break][break]

she pauses, though, at lulu's question. slowly, absinthe leans against the nearest counter, her arms crossing over her chest. she's always liked to pace while she ponders over difficult questions. as such, she takes a few thoughtful steps forward.[break][break]

"to start, i need to study the brain both at rest and in the midst of a lucid dream," she says slowly, weighing her options carefully. "to lucid dream is a trainable skill. i would prefer my assistants train the test subjects in the art of it."[break][break]

the chemist taps her fingers against her upper arm as she ponders further. "when i know the structure of a lucid dream, i will know the parts of the brain that needs to be stimulated to induce the same circumstances. then, i can formulate the drug with that knowledge in mind. off a hunch, galantamine will form the base of this endeavor. acetylcholine may be a good crossroad to explore, but i believe serotonin could also yield fruitful results."[break][break]

absinthe finally glances up at lulu. "it'll take time," she warns. "but i intend to make that time worthwhile."[break][break]

of finding natural lucid dreamers, she nodded. ”i can do that.” there were ways, and she was a skilled hunter.[break][break]

the preference in assistants was likely to be more difficult. grunts could be assigned anything, students brought aboard young. specific expertise would require outside recruiting in the heat of war.[break][break]

perhaps she’d fall short on her promise, but what would absinthe do? return to her bar’s kitchen?[break][break]

”wonderful – and i believe you will. as for assistants, i have one person in mind: a doctor, though i can’t speak on his availability. you may have to make do with grunts, but they’ll be teachable.”[break][break]

a few more steps brought her to a counter, where she found a beaker with a crack that had gone undetected by one such teachable grunt. ”i’ll replace this,” she noted, before turning back to the mystery that was their new chemist.[break][break]

”so, tell me about yourself. you were in a hurry to close up when we met.”[break]

absinthe hums softly. doctors were... fine. they were practically minded and could be useful. but they could also be squeamish, and they could also have morals. at the mention of grunts, though, the chemist nods.[break][break]

"grunts are adequate," she says shortly. "as long as they are not entirely useless. i will only tolerate so much incompetence."[break][break]

but then lulu turns to her with a question about herself, and absinthe stiffens. her muscles tense beneath her dark clothes, her hand clenching briefly around the edge of the counter. why would she ask such a question?[break][break]

then again, absinthe thinks, the chances of lulu knowing that the snake pit is quite literally her home are rather low. most people are not familiar with the sheer extent that grief has ravaged her life, nor that absinthe often finds herself drifting away on a dirty mattress in the small room above the bar.[break][break]

"there's nothing to tell," she says curtly. "i was handed an opportunity on a silver platter, and i saw it fit to begin preliminary research then and there. the bar is little more than a front for my true passion anyways." there is no vulnerability in her voice, not even the slightest tremor. she's been burned before by women like lulu flint, and she's not interested in being burned again.[break][break]

then, her eyes meet lulu's. "mmm. and you? why such investment in lucid dreaming?"[break][break]

a prying question for a prying question, though absinthe does not delude herself with the thought that lulu may answer honestly, or at all.

incompetence was rarely tolerated in the labs, and she was pleased to welcome aboard another fearsome deterrent.[break][break]

“’nothing to tell’,” she repeated with a keen look in her eye. ”i doubt that, given you’ve found yourself on this submarine – regardless of my invitation.”[break][break]

despite all the shininess of a new workspace and all the bright lights that drowned out the shadows, they remained in a dark sea of evil, screams swallowed in its depths. to celebrate was to thank the cruel poison of fate.[break][break]

“as i said: i’m interested in other dimensions and universes.” it was an increasingly common curiosity, buts hers was a clear pursuit. ”how familiar are you with the interdream zone?”[break][break]

absinthe says nothing for a moment that drags on as lulu implies her modest background may be false. she leans back against the counter behind her, face frozen into a stoic mask, though her eyes are razor sharp as they analyze lulu's expression.[break][break]

"it's true," she says cooly. "nothing to tell that you don't already know. seems to me that vipers that end up in a snake pit usually have similar backgrounds."[break][break]

it's a foul game, trying to pry into a history that she has kept deliberately shrouded in mystery for reasons she does not have the time nor the desire to delve into. absinthe's husband was killed by the very precinct that rewarded him, or so she assumes, though the memories are foggy and repressed. either way, it's a sore spot, a bleeding wound, and nobody should ever underestimate the bite in a wounded animal.[break][break]

lulu does have some interesting fascinations, though. while the substance of her character may be questionable, absinthe can't help but be intrigued as the woman divulges her ultimate goal.[break][break]

"i'm not familiar," she says slowly. "tell me more."

in time, the interdream zone would surely eat away at their world until there was nothing left but chaos.[break][break]

“phenomena have led me believe it links us to other universes. however, i’m uncertain it can be crossed by simply diving off the edge. as far as we’re aware, nothing comes back.”[break][break]

no one had ever found the edge, that she was aware of. it was all the drk triad’s untrustworthy explanation.[break][break]

”i believe there is a deeper ‘dream space’ – a shared network – connected to interdream zones of other timelines and alternate realities. that is where lucid dreaming comes in: to try to map that deeper realm or locate its far edge. if we’re able to define parameters of such a connection, it may be possible to warp from the interdream zone to another world.”[break][break]

she gave a thin smile. in her position of power and sleeplessness, she no longer cared how she sounded. they were in desperate times.[break][break]

absinthe has never been one to believe in fate, but as lulu explains the relevance of the interdream zone and her fascinations with it, she can't help but feel as though something has drawn her towards lulu, towards rocket, towards the endeavor of the submarine. the universe works in strange and mysterious ways.[break][break]

"i see," she says softly, her attention captivated fully by the concept that lulu is suggesting. her hands have ceased their usual nervous twitches in favor of lying limp against her upper arms, and a wrinkle has set between her brows. "so what you need is a chart. your exploration needs a map and an unmoving sky to navigate by."[break][break]

the unmoving sky, of course, being the state of lucidity invoked by a drug. absinthe's tasted the idea in her mind and she finds she enjoys the flavor.[break][break]

perhaps that is an immensely dangerous thought. she's already witnessed how tampering with unknown forces can level her into the dust, but absinthe has been in the dust for so long. at this point, she doubts she has much left to lose.[break][break]

but she sees something inside of lulu that she recognizes. something familiar. she digs deeper.[break][break]

"were you put on this by superiors, or do you pursue it all for the sake of scientific advancement?" absinthe pauses, eyes cutting. "or is it more personal than that?"

“my superiors are catching up in their understanding of the importance of this work,” she said. “it is for all of us. this world will end if the drk triad succeed in their mission, and it’s imperative that we have an escape route at the ready.”[break][break]

“as for personal interests: of course. access to other worlds and futures would expedite technological advancements, making greater exploration quickly possible within and beyond this universe.”[break][break]

not to mention, it would make world domination much, much easier for her ambitious kin.[break][break]

the depth of absinthe's memories are shallower than she oftentimes lets on, but at lulu's implication that not all members of the board have finished wrapping their heads around the urgency of lulu's project, absinthe instantly recalls her own superiors at her previous job dismissing her desperate pleadings after the death of her husband.[break][break]

whispers lie along her bones. it'll get better, they promised. and yet it never did.[break][break]

the similarity ends there. while absinthe has repainted the color of her life into neutrals, afraid of striking the match that will destroy all over again, lulu's screams passion. independence. they are in different stages of the fury attached to a grievance; lulu's beginning to burn brighter while absinthe's is overcome by magma that dries into black, bubbling peaks. containment.[break][break]

"interesting," she says, glancing away briefly. "extradition is an important human cause, though i'm hardly a researcher of space. i see, now, why you feel such passion, regardless."[break][break]

at that, absinthe moves towards one of the machines provided in her lab. "well, then," she says, running a hand lovingly across the stainless steel of the structure. "shall i begin?"
