GIDEON GRAVES hadn't been expecting another party to reach out about MEW, but it was a welcome interest nonetheless. ollie morales had briefed him on what to expect — a ranger like himself, seasoned by Hoenn's many hardships.[break][break]

Once annalise henderson was guided to his lab by a helpful docent, the professor stood to meet her, arm extended for a cordial handshake.[break][break]

"Miss Henderson," He greeted, his lips pressed into an almost-smile. "Thank you for coming."[break][break]

Pleasantries were exchanged but not lingered upon. Time was a commodity Gideon never enjoyed wasting.[break][break]

"I didn't realize Mew lacked a singular trainer." The professor commented, adding, "Mr. Connors contacted me not too long ago as well."

annalise takes the proffered hand, mirroring the almost-smile that settles across his own mouth. a sense of understanding washes over her as she looks up at the gideon graves, the once-faceless name often spoken by ollie morales. now that she's met him, she gets it. [break][break]her admiring is swiftly cut short by the mention of a mr. connors. it makes Greyson Connors sound so old.[break][break]"oh, yeah, gr— um, mr. connors told me about that. and the league granted me mew after the battle in sootopolis, so it has a singular trainer now." [break][break]mew is here. annalise knows, not through some powerful bond, but because mew is only invisible, not immaterial. the fabric of her shirt suddenly dimples along her shoulder, weighed down by a force unseen. [break][break]"which is why i'm here. you've worked with mew before, so you probably have better insights on it than i do. mew and i are going to be fighting together, so i need to know ... more, i guess. whatever you know. whatever we can learn about mew together."

Though they still knew very little about MEW itself, the fact that it was a powerful ally was an uncontested fact. annalise henderson's desire to learn more about the Pokémon now in her charge was admirable.[break][break]

Briefly, Gideon's gaze dropped to the ranger's shoulder, where he saw fabric creasing under some invisible weight. Ah. He'd heard about that little trick.[break][break]

"I'm more than happy to help." Especially if it meant that the pair would be aiding Hoenn during these dark times. Knowledge was power, after all.[break][break]

"From what I understand, Mew is nothing short of a genetic marvel. It's ability to transform itself is beyond that of any other known Pokémon."[break][break]

He nodded to her shoulder, adding, "Even now, blending into its surroundings so seamlessly. Very few creatures are capable of something like that."

[break][break] at the mention of mew blending into the background, she reaches her hand up, fingers blindly searching for resistance. they ghost against the psychic-type's cheek and pink bands begin to spread out from beneath her fingertips as the veil is lifted. now in view, mew watches gideon curiously from her shoulder, recognizing him from a previous visit. [break][break]"yeah, i had no idea mew could transform like that beforehand."[break][break]mew pushes off her shoulder and glides over to gideon, appraising him in an inquisitive orbit around his body. [break][break]"i was told it's never transformed into another legendary pokemon before — that it always refused, i guess," hesitation flashes across her face. she doesn't know gideon — she's just making a leap of faith on the esteemed opinion others have of him. the look comes and goes in an instant, chased away by rationality: a dozen people saw it firsthand. it's not a secret. "but it finally did it. in that battle in sootopolis, it transformed into palkia." [break][break]annalise looks at gideon expectantly, as if she's waiting for him to unspool the complicated mystery of why from the paltry knowledge she has.

GIDEON GRAVES's eyebrows shot up in an instant.[break][break]

"Why now? What's changed?" He asked — well, himself, mostly, but also the room at large. His amber-gold gaze rested expectantly on MEW, studying the small pink creature as if it would suddenly reveal its secrets to them.[break][break]

"Was it a perfect transformation? No defects? No abnormalities?" [break][break]

When Pokémon with similar powers like DITTO attempted transformations into Legendary Pokémon, it always ended in a failure of some sort and, up until now, MEW had refused to even attempt it. Some thought it could never be done — that the power of such creatures was too much to mimic.

[break][break]"yes, it was a perfect transformation." there's a soft note of pride in her voice. "and it transformed into a perfect copy of zamazenta a week ago, under the supervision of me and mr. connors."[break][break]a boon for the league — if she hadn't noticed mew's behavior in the training room. her brows furrow, then she continues: [break][break]"before mew transformed into zamazenta, it seemed like it was hesitating? and professor reyes told me a while ago that maybe mew hadn't transformed before sootopolis because it was afraid of something. like, something bigger than the legendary pokemon we know about."[break][break]their sibylline creator had been illeana reyes's guess. mew's ability to transform seems like an insignificant slight compared to things like legendary pokemon appearing from other universes, though, and no divine retribution had rained down on her and Greyson Connors when it happened. [break][break]"but nothing baaad happened and it doesn't seem painful to mew so ... i don't know. maybe it doesn't enjoy doing it."

The professor listened intently as annalise henderson relayed all the details she felt were pertinent — which was a lot. He appreciated her thoroughness, though. Any and all information was helpful during times like this, where they teetered on the brink of the unknown.[break][break]

"Something bigger?" GIDEON GRAVES rubbed his chin thoughtfully, wondering at what could possibly rival things like KYOGRE rampaging across the region's oceans or KYUREM splitting a giant chasm across Hoenn's landscape.[break][break]

"Perhaps not. If there's some unwritten code it's trying to abide by," He beckoned MEW over with an open palm, luring it away from the very expensive laboratory equipment. "Then that might explain it's resistance. But..."[break][break]

Gideon frowned, theories swirling around in his brain. Why now?[break][break]

"Something's changed and we might never know what." Despite MEW's incredible capabilities, it lacked the power of speech to explain it's motivations.[break][break]

"I think the better question is: what do you want from Mew, Miss Henderson?" [break][break]

Comfort or not, the Pokémon had demonstrated for her something it had never done for anyone else. [break][break]

"Do you intend to keep asking it to transform, knowing it's reluctance?"

[break][break]the answer to his first question comes easily. the second — she hesitates. a beat of indecision. a moment of selfishness. in the near future, she'll brandish mew's ability to transform like a loaded gun on the battle-scarred route between petalburg and oldale. [break][break]she's a promise-breaker, easily coerced by her feelings. but today, she's genuine, grounded in rational thinking. she doesn't want to make mew do something it doesn't want to do, but some part of her brain already knows she will ask again. out of anger. out of desperation. [break][break]"but if there's ever a situation where it's absolutely necessary, i hope mew comes to that decision on its own. and that it's able to trust that me and the rest of the league will protect it from whatever is holding it back when it does."

GIDEON GRAVES was no tactician. No great warrior or loyal soldier. His thoughts were not perpetually occupied by the trials of wartime; he had the luxury of ignorance, to a degree, that annalise henderson was not afforded.[break][break]

If he were in her position, would he have answered differently?[break][break]

"I don't disagree, but," MEW's battle prowess had been proven prior, with its PALKIA transformation the pinnacle of its observed abilities. The precocious creature was an asset, to be sure, though an unpredictable one. [break][break]

What if it refused annalise henderson's requests in the future — even if dire? Even if it meant life or death? Could Hoenn reliably count on it with stakes being as high as they were?[break][break]

"You're putting a lot of trust into an unknown." Gideon watched as MEW occupied itself by doing backflips in the air beside them. [break][break]

"When Mr. Connors brought Mew to the lab last time, it was unable — or unwilling — to transform into a Paradox Pokémon. It makes me wonder what other limitations its powers have."
