He sees himself, having been out playing all day, returning to the building where he lived. He’d made it back before they lit the red lanterns. Often, if he didn’t, he was yelled at by the madame of the establishment.[break] “ I’m ready for supper!” He grins up at the lady manning the door.[break] The grown Hitoshi does something he’s almost never done. His hand finds Yumi’s and squeezes it anxiously. He knows what’s coming next. This part he knows very well.[break] “ She’s…” The lady says with hesitation, like she knows the taste of a lie upon her tongue. “ She’s gone, Hitoshi. You can’t stay here anymore.”[break] “ Huh?” The boy is confused, written in the soft fall of his voice. “ Where’d she go?”[break] “ A-Away.” The man reads the hesitation and self-loathing in the woman’s voice. “ She was sent away because of how you beat the other boys up.” Followed by another repetition. “ You can’t stay here anymore.”[break] He tries to step inside, but adult strength wins out. He’s forced back. Tears begin to well as recognition dawns in the pup that his home is vanishing before his eyes.[break] “ Where’s mama?!” He shouts like a wounded animal. “ Where is she, ya liar?!” She pushes him back, slams the door, and he is left standing there.[break] “ Get outta our way and stop scarin’ the whores.” A crass, ugly man says, pushing the dog away. He too knocks and gets no answer. Instinct, honed from how the adults treat him, kicks in and he runs, runs away, with stormclouds gathering in the distance.[break] The last thing he hears before the vision ends is his mother’s voice, a final cruelty doled by the Xatu or this simulated world.[break] “ I never should have kept him.”[break] When they find themselves back in reality, Hitoshi finds he is crying.
