an overarching sensation of fuzzy disconnection has settled in the aftermath of sootopolis. the head professor still finds herself back in that ruined city, strewn across recently flooded slabs of archaic rubble, barely struggling to stay above water.

the reports arrive on her desk, blood red against pristine white.

when she blinks, they're regular office paper with inky lettering. the stains are gone, but she can't seem to scrub out of the mind.

and when it becomes too much, when she's fighting sleep in the late hours of the morning after the fresh midnight coffee has run dry, her lab's door chimes softly with arrival.

her head rises slowly, a leisurely blink following. her neck creaks from strain and she hums softly through discomfort before rising from the chair to greet the familiar face.

"hey," she murmurs, a small smile rising. "i wasn't expecting you."

a brief pause follows. the silence is unnerving, filled with whispering shadows. she rushes to overwrite it quickly.

Roy hesitated, struggling to find the right words. That was the reason for the pause. Though his relationship with the professor had been largely professional, he still considered her a friend. He knew she'd been at Sootopolis, but the weight of his failures in that battle lingered. He had let too many people down and couldn't quite face them yet, at least not in the ways he felt that he ought to. Even though they hadn’t made contact during the chaos, he knew deep down he could’ve done more.

Her question, though, left him cornered, forcing him into a conversation he'd been trying to avoid.

"I'm fine," Roy answered, even as the stinging pain in his arms and back reminded him otherwise. He quickly shifted the focus away from himself. "What about you?"

In the tension of the moment, he nearly forgot about his companion. A green scarf, snug around his forearm, trailed down to an emerald-leashed Zygarde. The hexagonal-patterned canine padded through the lab, sniffing curiously as Roy and Illeana exchanged their awkward greetings. It seemed to be searching for something.

she hums, seemingly accepting the answer and backing off with a soft, "okay."

it's easy to ask questions of others, to shift attention and focus onto their shoulders as if nothing else matters... but when it's shifted back, the weight becomes suffocating to bear.

"oh, um," she pauses, feeling her shoulders tense. shadows creep up, whispers echo, and she lies through her teeth. "i'm fine."

in an effort to ditch the more serious aspect lingering in undertones, her eyes dart to find something else to place a spotlight on.

and his zygarde, familiar as it occupies itself with sniffing around her office as if a hunting hound searching for its master's prey, will fit that role just perfectly.

she flashes a small smile. it tries to meet the eyes but the change never quite occurs.

The tension between them began to ease as Illeana, ever the scientist, steered the conversation into more comfortable territory.

"Yeah," Roy agreed, lifting his arm where the green scarf draped loosely. "I was hoping you could help me figure it out."

Truthfully, Roy knew very little beyond what his fragmented memories allowed. He recalled finding a strange device in the ancient Draconid ruins. He knew it had something to do with absorbing cells into a core. His grandmother had once told him faint stories of a similar creature. And somehow, this canine beside him, covered in hexagonal patterns, was tied to it all.

she blinks, mild confusion beginning to settle. typically people come here with some sort of semblance of understanding and prepped questions already in mind… but he seems to be somewhat of an anomaly, an outlier from the norm.

”i can try.”

she steps a little closer to the zygarde, tentative on the approach to not startle the investigating dog.

”does it do this a lot? or is this the first place it’s been looking for something?”

"Honestly," Roy paused, searching for the right words, "it seems overly curious about everything. Maybe it's tied to the form it's taken."

His mind drifted back to the Draconid ruins, the flatworm-like creatures that had burst from the walls, and the cube he’d used to collect them. The memory gave him just enough to offer something useful for Illeana’s research.

"I'm not sure if this helps, but I didn’t find it like this," he clarified, assuming she’d understand what he meant.

As Illeana approached, the dog paid her little attention, continuing to explore the lab with its nose, as if on a mission of its own.

gently, she reaches to offer her hand toward the sniffing canine. it may not pay her any mind, acting more and more like a dog on a mission to find some food, perhaps cake.

at his mention, however, she turns and stares at roy, cocking her head slightly to the left in question.

”it was in another form before this?”

had FERNANDO SILPH’s also been in another form?

she waits for more insight to be handed over on a silver platter before making any concrete deductions, but the green coloring of both roy’s canine and fernando’s seem to match almost a little too well to the cells she’s seen before.

"Yeah, there was this strange stone," Roy began, feeling a twinge of guilt for reducing something so important to such a simple term.

"When I pulled it off the pedestal, a bunch of pokemon just appeared from the walls. The ruins had carvings that showed me how to absorb them with the stone. Once I had them all, this is what I was left with," he added, his explanation feeling rough around the edges.

"If it helps," he paused, thinking back to the ancient writings on the ruin walls, "I think its name is Zygarde."

Roy put emphasis on the name, carefully pronouncing it from the fragments of memory he could recall. Hearing its name, the hound briefly stopped, acknowledging it, before resuming its search of the lab.

a strange stone?

”do you have it with you?”

better to lay eyes on it, to study up close.

she has to picture it clearly, the experience, but she can’t quite discern how the pokemon formed into a canine, not yet.

the name, however, pulls more pieces of the pull together and she can capture the concept well enough to hum in understanding.

”it might be looking for more of those pokemon, perhaps.”

after a moment, she makes a gesture for roy to follow her further into the lab as a report pops into her memory. she leads him toward the wide filing cabinet behind her desk and begins idly rumaging through it as she continues speaking.

”reports of something with the same kind of name were received from the rift containing the mechanical kingdom. i think i still have them somewhere around here…”

Her request felt invasive, stirring a deep sense of protectiveness in him. The object was his to guard, like a dragon protecting its hoard. He couldn’t shake how odd that instinct felt, but he knew if he wanted answers, he had to be willing to share, even if it made him uneasy.

"Here," he said, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a black stone etched with green and extended his arm, offering it to her.

"This is what I used to collect them," Roy added. Though he held it out, his grip was tight, reluctant to fully let go, as if part of him still wasn’t ready to trust.

her eyes dart between him and the stone, curiosity making red a little brighter, a little livelier.

"I just held the stone up to them, and they were absorbed," Roy recalled. "I don’t know if they were drawn to it or just trying to escape. A lot of them scattered as soon as I took this thing off the pedestal."

He then let her continue with her hypothesis.

"Cells?" Roy echoed, his mind flashing back to the stories his grandmother used to tell about an ancient dragon divided into parts to protect the world. The similarities were hard to ignore.

The Zygarde paused its exploration for a moment, as if quietly listening to the conversation.

Roy felt like he had already told her everything. There wasn’t much more to say, despite her persistent questions. He had laid it all out and hoped it would be enough to finally get some answers. He needed to know if this creature was the same one from his grandmother’s legend.

"I don’t know," he admitted, making it clear that was all he had. He took the stone back from her, his touch far less cautious than hers, and slipped it into his pocket.

When she asked him to help search, he did what he could with the Zygarde still tethered to his arm. He skimmed through reports, brushing them aside with his fingertips once he glanced over their images. Then, he found one that caught his eye; a picture that looked like the cells he had seen in the ruins at Sootopolis. He paused, letting the memory surface.

"This is it," Roy said firmly. "This is what I saw."
