Petalburg sleeps soundly beneath him. Order reigns, though some might call it tyranny. Inoue Hitoshi has been appointed as Rocket’s newest beast. Some among the grunts whisper that he is their weakest beast, a title that gets under his skin in ways it never would before.[break]
He looks down over the city from the penthouse suite of Petalburg’s nicest hotel. Regirock’s boulders missed the building, though the same can’t be said for many of the other structures he can see from his window. Rebuilding this place will take months if they’re lucky, years if they’re not.[break]
This penthouse is his, the first domicile he’s ever taken for his own beyond a bunk on the sub. It’s spacy, and today he receives his first guest. jayden cross is coming, the blade Rocket holds in its right hand. He, as the left-hand blade, is delighted to receive him. There’ll be a meeting soon. All of Rocket’s bigwigs will be in attendance. He’ll be there, officially recognized as part of the command structure.[break][break]
Butterfrees play in his stomach at the thought. His Kartana play among themselves, a sight that calms him down. The gentle ding of an elevator signals Jayden’s arrival. Hitoshi stands up straight, goes to the elevator, and allows his guest in.[break]
“Senpai.” The word is spoken with less spark than before Hitoshi set out for Mossdeep. Joy shows in his eyes and his smile, but he stands up straighter, looks up at Jayden with more severity. “I’m glad yer alright. How’re things down in Sootopolis?”

It's a bigger building than he's expecting Hitoshi Inoue to live in, but perhaps that has to do more with the cast of rubble and ash that is strewn across all of the city proper — a result of the hollow death toll that rings all throughout the city square, with nothing else for miles but the grunts that wipe howard slayte's REGIROCK free of grime and blood.

[break][break] Even standing in the doorway, he can tell how spacious the space is. He wonders how much of this was chosen by Hitoshi himself, and how much the likes of Yumi Hasegawa had to play in it.

“Some things never change.” He looks up at Jayden, bright as the north star in winter, and smiles a boyish smile. Even with a war raging, he still needs someone to look up to, a star to chase. Turning, he hikes up his sword where it sits in its scabbard, walks to a counter, and pulls out two wine glasses. They were here when he got here. Most things in this place were. Some might call him a squatter, living like this. For now, Inoue Hitoshi is happy to simply exist.[break]
“I’m real proud t’be a Beast.” Hitoshi’s admission is accompanied by another smile. “I’ve never really…well, I wasn’t gonna get promoted in the Hasegawa family back in Johto or anything. Don’t think I even had the ambition fer somethin’ like that.” His face grows serious. “These people, Rocket I mean, they’re yer family, yeah?”[break]
“Just…feels right, doin’ my part t’keep that family alive n’ together.”

A clink of the glass serves as a precursor to the drink that follows. Hitoshi grins until the liquor hits his throat. Mmm he grunts as the fire swims down into his stomach.[break]
“That’s good shit.” He helps himself to another glass – but just the one extra for now. Where matters of family, fellowship, and brotherhood are concerned, a man had best keep his wits about him. He’s in good company, and that proves more intoxicating than the brew.[break]
“Thinkin’ of ‘em like family…” It sounds like the preamble to a confession. Hitoshi’s eyes drift to the city, with all the work that waits for them both. Adulthood, beasthood, and all the responsibilities of both prove taxing, but he thinks himself up to the challenge.[break]
“Well, that’s somethin’ to get a fella through the day. I never had any family before, ‘cept Yumi.” A moment of quiet contemplation, an emptiness as he wishes Yumi Hasegawa was here too. She is far away, managing her casino, cutting her own path.[break]

“Hmm.” A thoughtful sound as he tallies another reason to always watch Cillian Quinn’s back in his mind. Inoue Hitoshi left a small part of his soul in a distant dream of Galar, and that part understands Jayden’s feelings on the man perfectly.[break]
“Blondie’s hell of a guy.” The insufferably human part of him wants to tell Jayden to not consider his life forfeit to anyone. His own selfish heart wants to see more of Jayden’s swordplay, come what may. The notion goes unvoiced. Jayden’s soul is also guided by bushido, and he would sooner die than dishonor his family.[break]

[break][break] It isn't often that Jayden shares his story with others, but not because of lack of any desire to do so — it is merely because it is a topic that rarely comes up, as most of the people that the admin engages with are already people who know that story.

[break][break] There is no pain in Jayden's gaze as he stares down at his forearms, crisscrossed with marks that do not need to be named.

[break][break] "It was back with my parents were alive — namely, my father." He glances back at Hitoshi Inoue, expression meaningful. "My father was not a kind man."

[break][break] He had known many people back in his youth, back then. But almost all had quaked in the fear of what was his father's presence, the way that light fled from shadows. After all, why would they engage with a child that was so clearly marked for death?

As if Inoue Hitoshi needs another reason to adore Cillian Quinn. His admiration for the man only grows. Cillian Quinn is many things, but Rocket’s newest beast doubts even he knows he once played the role of light shining in the darkness. Sadness tinges his amber eyes when he sees the scars, ugly things that helped make Jayden the beautiful thing he is today.[break]
“I…I know how that goes.” It brings to mind his own memories, forced upon him once more by the cruel hand of a simulated universe. “I dunno how I would’ve turned out if I never met Yumi. Johto’s streets were rough.” A moment of silence, and he admits something with a dry smile.[break]
“Wish we couldda met back then, even if I was a bratty kid.” Would that he could have bared his fangs at those who gave Jayden his scars.
