A difficult situation, then, to be to blame for the issue. Hideo had his frustrations with Uxie, but he'd never blamed Uxie for his difficulties.

Listening to Eris speak made it clearer why she was blaming Mesprit; it had exerted its domain on her too frequently, too drastically.

Hideo could do little but listen as Eris shared her fears with him, her experiences that brought upon this mindset. He hadn't known that John Sullivan had gone through that - he could only go off the bits people shared with him, and he hadn't had any contact with Doug in a while.

He tried to think about who Eris was talking about with that last one - but he was drawing a blank. But by the way she was talking, it was probably a Rocket.

Because of course they would go around leveling cities, to prove human strength. Somehow.

He wracked his brain, trying to think of something to help alleviate her anxiety - but he's drawing blanks. He, too, had his feelings affected by his Pokemon - Elga did it for him - but those were times where he wanted them to do it, to help him get through an ordeal that he needed a Calm Mind to get through.

And he knew telling her that wouldn't calm her.

"Eris…of course it's your will. We all have the will to protect what's close to us."

Still, he tried to help. "You're volunteering to help me because you want to. We helped each other even before Uxie and Mesprit were with us."

"Even with the chain, I'm still me."

And she's still Eris.

And yet, for all the ugly she sees in herself, that is not what Hideo wants her to see right here, right now. These chains of hope that he wields, these shackles of responsibilities she cannot handle. Whatever feeble help he offers is a sliver of peace within this tumultuous storm, shared between two people with no room for gods to interfere.[break][break]

And all the while, Mesprit is uncharacteristically silent. Gaze turned away and hands kept to themselves, as if even reaching out would destroy everything this girl still had.

Everything changes. Or it can change.

Hideo knew that well enough. It was why a boy that once desired the pedestal of Champion, settled for the position of Gym Leader. Why the boy that idolized the League, now cautiously held secrets from it.

Why a Rocket could reform and find a better life.

Why a child with boundless optimism, could find that joy tempered and battered from experience.

"Even if we change, I'm still Hideo, and you're still Eris."

He could do little but repeat at this point. No matter what god was with him, what experiences influenced him, he was still himself.

And the girl whose hand he held, was Eris.

Uxie could see Mesprit's own distress, and reached out their hand to their sibling's. No matter what happened between them and their chosen, they had each other.

Hearing those words did bring a smile to Hideo's face. A small, weary smile, but genuine nonetheless. He didn't look further into her words, taking them as they were.

And there was a detail that Hideo missed - that Uxie didn't.

Eris trusted him.

Not the others here.

Not Mesprit.

Just Hideo.

Uxie gently squeezed Mesprit's hand; Uxie still trusted Mesprit.

But it had no idea how Mesprit could repair Eris's trust at this point. And it didn't dare peek into the future to see what the outcome would be.
