HEARTBEAT

It was such a perfect reason, too. Even June could realize it enough. Her fingers were the defining proof: raw, red, sending shocks of bloody pain up her arms. Everything she touched, the rubble, the stone, her clothes, all of it left red streaks. There must’ve been glass, nails, sharp bits where she tried to free herself.
Howard wasn’t wrong. Humans were difficult creatures, and they broke for numerous reasons.
But what he didn’t understand was the method to the madness. Sometimes they broke for complex, infinitely deep reasons. Other times, they failed because of one simple flaw, one haywire piece of code that sent the entire system into dial up. June’s was small spaces. It didn’t take much to break her.
Howard…
“I… don’t know… if I want to…”
Even as he tried to hide, June stood. His dusty brown hat came into view. Then, his broken body and his certainly broken leg. Step by horrid step, she closed the distance. He tried to hide, and it was for a reason.
It was never as complicated as they made it out to be.
“I… think I have to, Howard. It's an itch I can’t scratch. It’s a recurring thing that keeps bringing us together. Sleep has been almost impossible, since the day I can’t remember. It keeps me up at night.”
Someone killed her Dad. She never knew her mother. That hospital room was an enigma.
She’d kill to get even a glimpse of insight into any of them. “I need to see it for myself. I need to fly. Or die trying.”
