Two years ago, on Hoenn’s darkest day, people huddled within these halls like animals in a barn. As war burns bright above, it finds itself repurposed into one small outpost along a greater supply chain. Isaac Merlo and Remiel Calcifet provided good intel. The only sign that anything is out of order in this hidden place is a mist that wafts throughout the facility.[break][break]
A phantom walks along a hallway deep in the bowels of this place. His hand feels along the wall, checking for imperfections. Once upon a lifetime, he made a living off of finding that which was not meant to be found.[break][break]
Where are you? The phantom thinks. Just where the hell are you?[break][break]
His boot’s steel toe stubs against something out of place. Bending down, he finds a switch. Also just as Isaac Merlo said.[break][break]
Bingo.[break][break]
One gentle tug and the wall fades away. Standing up, the phantom walks down into the tunnels below. Without his unique set of skills, navigating this network would be suicide for the unassuming.[break][break]
Footsteps echo through the cave. Though he does not yet conjure Ascalon, dragonslaying sword of heroes, he holds his right hand out to his side. The left slips to a pokeball.[break][break]
“Hello?” The word is a gamble. There’s enough Kanto Rockets that one unfamiliar voice won’t arouse immediate suspicion. “These tunnels are a maze, man.” A few words, peppered onto a rudimentary deception to add flavor for the unseen Rocket.

Grigori’s attention was fully diverted upon the sliding of the hidden wall. He waited silently for the hit squad to find him and finally put an end to his life. Even if he’d taken the role of bunker inspector, it was still a Rocket job. League didn’t seem the type to take him prisoner in these trying times.

Easier to kill him.

But death never came. Instead, the quiet thump of boots descended downward. The grunt peered around the corner, breath caught in his lungs. Escape would be a piece of cake: turn around, and simply pretend he was never there.

But duty would not let him. He had promised to inspect this place. He’d promised to help Rocket all those moons ago. Thus, he crept forward. His only giveaway was the soft jangle of fishing lures.

And if he hadn’t followed him almost directly, he’d be as hopelessly lost as the sheriff would claim.

“I’m inclined to agree,” Grigori said suddenly. If Navy turned around, he’d see a disguised fisherman with numerous construction and safety tools peppered around his person. He held his own Poke ball, but not even a single weapon. One might think him stupid.

“Perhaps you should leave, then. Before you get lost.”

Others would think him highly dangerous. Which was the stranger?

As the sheriff turns his head to face the voice, his face is a study in severity and surprise. Upon truly taking in the sight of the fisherman, severity is replaced by mirth. There is something absurd about the image. His father was a man of the sea, yet he did not advertise it to the man as this one does.[break][break]
How absurd they must both look, here in these draconian tunnels buried beneath 104 – a wraith and a fisherman. Navy fights down a smile, trying to afford this severe, well-built stranger the respect he is due. He’s older than most, and he holds that pokeball like it means business. Navy relaxes, making sure that the man sees his own hand is nowhere near his pokeballs. There’s a seventh beneath his tattered poncho, but there’s no need for that one either.[break][break]
They’re just two men out of their element, lost in a tunnel, having a civil chat.[break][break]
“’Fraid I can’t. Work. You know how it goes.” His eyes nod down at the pokeball. “You don’t gotta hold onto that if you don’t want. We’re both a bit too old to fight just ‘cause we locked eyes.” [break][break]
A quiet humorless laugh follows his words. That was his brother’s way. It used to annoy everyone he’d meet when Navy took him across the region. Back then, battle seemed more a sport than a grim reality.[break][break]
“You finding lots of fish down here, man?”

The humorless laugh was met with an even colder stare. What, did the sheriff reference a meme of some kind? Its point went entirely over the ‘fishermans’ head. Humor was far from what he desired.

If his enemy squinted, he might imagine an icy sheen that covered Grigori’s eyes. His poke ball did not lower, not even an inch. All signs pointed to imminent violence– but he did not let loose the creature within. Not yet.

His bones ached in the damp, and hesitated with the thought of violence. His conversation with howard slayte echoed in his mind like distant, intelligible noise did the hall. But even if he hated his organization, there was still a job to do.

“I’m finding lots of structural integrity flaws within the construction of this bunker,” he said flatly. “Things needed to be fixed or tampered with, depending on the desire of my bosses. No dangerous chemicals and the radiation clocks in at passive levels, though. It is merely the fault of flimsy half-measures that compromise everything.”

Half-measures were the devil’s playground. It led to many unnecessary deaths, all to save half a day. Maybe it worked for the people during Meteno, but it would not suit anyone now.

“While I may not be an expert of architecture and building safety, I advise you once more to leave.”

“Now.”

A long, slow exhale follows the older man’s words. The wounded phantom feels typecast. Long, long ago, in another life, a client told the young Michael Navidson he was more like a cowboy than a detective. Things always end in a shootout when he’s involved. A warrior’s life demands a blood toll. That’s his life, boiled down to its bare essentials. There’s always a fight. Always a fast draw. Always a wound or a near miss.[break][break]
How easy it would be to rush for his pokeball, throw out Shuwen, and see who emerges on the other side whole. What a wonderful fight it would be. This man, whoever he is, has the eyes and voice of one whose soul is steel.[break][break]
But he doesn’t go for his pokeballs, not the ones at his belt or the hidden seventh. He speaks.[break][break]
“I’ll cut the shit. I’m one of the Elite Four. Michael Navidson, but call me Navy. League’s got me scouting these bunkers. Look, we can fight, if you want, but this’d be a poor place for either of us to die. So let’s figure out something else instead.”[break][break]
He expects a red flash. His hand scratches his chest, just over where the pokeball dangles beneath the poncho. The other will get his out first, should this break down, but it will be a close thing. Even if it costs him first blood, he extends the olive branch.[break][break]
“Think it’s safe to say Rocket’s already claimed this bunker, yeah?”
