Finally feeling comfortable going outside again after a long talk with Navy about her role going forward, Andrea decided to do some training on Route 102 in order to hone her skills as a trainer.

This forest-surrounded area was quite a ways away from her usual stomping grounds, but it was rumored to house some particularly strong species of Pokémon thanks to the recent anomalies that plagued the region.

Little did the Pokémon-costumed woman know that she was about to unwittingly get involved in the ever-escalating faction conflict yet again. The very same conflict that had taken Chomper’s life.

Her Salamence was the first to be alerted of a possibly hostile presence, snarling in their general direction. “Who’s there?” Asked the eccentric cosplayer. “If you’re Rocket, know that we’re gonna fight back!” She declared.

It had been their first time out in a while since Aqua had their mission with Kouji Matsubara , and probably the first one not being babysit in kind. The blue haired grunt had been stationed in the forest and been on the lookout for any potential League threats that would be skulking about. Lucky for them, it wasn't entirely a short time before one had presented itself to them. A woman came by as Aqua and their team readied themselves from above. The plan had been to catch them off guard and go into action, but that was before the Salamance had ruined everything. With their cover blown, Aqua dropped out of the tree. [break][break]

"Fight back, huh? Good, I've been meaning for a warm up." Aqua said, throwing out a pokeball onto the field to summon their Lapras. With the dual-type fully out and ready, they looked over at Andrea and their opponent, shaping them both up. "You look like you're ready for a slumber party instead of a war zone." They mused, while their Lapras reared its head back to fire off an ICE SHARD at the Salamance. [break][break]

“I’d choose a slumber party over a war zone any day of the week! It’s you who invaded our homeland and haven’t allowed us one moment of rest since!” The weirdly-dressed woman retorted.

She was projecting her anger against the organization as a whole on this one grunt. Her past self would not have done that. Had she become another angry person hellbent on destroying Rocket? The thought caused her to falter, but only for a moment.

Lapras’ attack was super effective, but not enough to finish the Salamence off. Andrea’s Mega Ring glinted. From the lingering cloud of frost, the azure dragon re-emerged in its Mega Evolved form, aiming to slice the polar plesiosaur with its crescent-shaped wings.

“Return the favor, Meatloaf!” The dragon enthusiast ordered, opting to focus on the battle itself rather than any questions still gnawing at her conscience.

Aqua shrugged at the woman lashing out against them. "I didn't even get to be a part of that force. Said I was too young. This is the only real thing I've done since the war started." They looked over at the Salamance post ice attack. Yeah, it looked pretty peeved about being attacked and all. For a moment, it seemed like things were going to go pretty okay for them. They had the advantage here typing wise. But it wasn't until the Salamance got a big hit of mega energy that things started to get rather dicey. [break][break]

The Lapras let out a soft growl at the mega evolved Salamance now. Even out of water, it knew that its chances here were going to be dwindled away if its opponent could pull that out on turn one. Aqua tensed up at the development, but continued to hold their ground. The grunt did his bets to remain composed for their Pokemon. "Everybody has a mega stone these days..." They mumbled to themselves in annoyance and watched as the pajama wearing person ordered their Pokemon to fight back. [break][break]

The RETURN had been a pretty harsh move, as the Lapras defended against it as bets it could. The water-type let out a pained noise and did its best to shake off the pain. It had been through far worse with its trainer than some mega evolution. "Meatloaf, huh?" Aqua looked over at their pokemon and then decided the next course of action. All they had to do was hold until the mega energy drained away and tire it out. "Hydro Pump." Lapras reared its head back, gathering water inside of its mouth and then spitting out a burst of high pressure water at the Salamance. [break][break]

“Look out!” Cried the draconic trainer, as her Mega Salamence got doused with highly pressurized water. With its wings dripping wet, maintaining flight proved difficult. “Meatloaf, Roost!”

While the winged lizard slowly healed itself on the ground, Andrea contemplated what the blue-haired grunt had said earlier. They were apparently on their first mission. And she was going all out on the poor kid.

She remembered her vow to Naomi Sato to help de-escalate the faction conflict. The Visionary’s dedication to her pursuit of peace inspired her. She had to do better too. Not everything was about winning.

“Why did you join Rocket?” The woman calmly asked after a brief pause. Much like her roosting Salamence, she took a break of her own from fighting, trying to talk things out instead.

Aqua didn't say much in terms of watching the lizard get a face full of water. They remained rather apathetic and waited for the other girl to make her next move. To their surprise, she didn't immediately order the Salamance to attack in retaliation. Instead, this woman ordered the dragon-type to Roost and thought she could just talk things out. As if they were going to just try and swap stories, maybe talk things out like they were in therapy together. [break][break]

"What do you care? We're enemies. Do you need a reason to fight me? I invaded your homeland, didn't I?" Their soft, androgynous voice asked, though Aqua did think twice about launching another attack her way. Whatever, they would humor her for now.[break][break]

"Mm. Back home, League and land developers were building worthless luxury shit along the coast and near habitats constantly. Resorts, casinos, hotels. Stuff only people with money need. They move in, pollute everything, and the League doesn't even bat an eye. I gathered some friends and we tried everything: protests, announcements, fundraisers, nothing worked. People would come to one, feel good about themselves, and then never be seen again. Everybody wants to do their part until it's time for action. I watched every reserve and habitat I dedicated myself to be turned into a fucking parking lot or a coffee shop." [break][break]

It ate away at them, with Aqua showing signs of visible aggression because of the recollection. Their volume had grown to shouting, but soon grew calm as the Lapras moved forward to nuzzle her trainer's cheek. The grunt sighed, stroking the Lapras' scales to calm themselves. [break][break]

"Then one day, I stopped caring. If people wanted to use us as pedestal for themselves or a way to get a tax write off, I'd give them what they wanted. I spent an entire summer catching Voltorbs. When the fall started, I snuck into a construction site, planted them at the base and made them explode. Then I did it again and again. I got good at it that I could make my own without the need to hurt them anymore. Realtors, land developers, everyone started to abandon projects because of us." [break][break]

"We gave out demands, reforms to clean up derelict sites and to make those in charge pay for what they did. I won't say it wasn't addicting, and we overstepped with threatening people, but we did. One night, we were set up and had a sting operation waiting for us, arrested us all. I was the only one who got away and sailed here on Icey. When we touched down, I was approached and they made good offers. I don't care about what Rocket wants, but I won't let Hoenn turn into what happened back home." [break][break]

Aqua looked up back at their opponent, tussling some hair behind their shoulder. "I don't fight for myself, I never have. I fight for what Hoenn deserves. To be free of anything that could harm our world or the Pokemon."

Despite scoffing internally at the thought of talking things out, the androgynous grunt opened up like a dam when asked the simplest of questions. Maybe they did need someone to share their life story with after all.

Andrea remained silent, absorbing every word, which helped her understand her supposed enemy a little bit more. Contrary to Team Rocket’s general stance, this kid deeply cared about Pokémon. They cared so much, they were even willing to commit acts of terror. She could respect that, even if she did not fully agree.

The costumed trainer gestured at her Salamence to stand down. The azure dragon returned to its original form, the effects of Mega Evolution undone. There was no reason to exert itself when there was no battle going on.

“Wanna know something funny? We both want the same thing.” The eccentric cosplayer said. “I love Pokémon, and I love Hoenn. It’s got the most diverse ecosystem in the world… but it’s threatened by our constant fighting and darker forces working behind the scenes.”

The kid claimed to be relatively new to the region, but surely they had heard about what had happened barely a month ago. Petalburg and Sootopolis would never be the same again.

“If this war keeps up, all of Hoenn could end up in ruins because both sides are too stubborn to give up.” Despite the bleakness of her statement, the woman mustered a smile. “I can’t stop it… but we can! The people can! League or Rocket--it shouldn’t matter if we both love Pokémon and Hoenn!” She vehemently stated.

Her actions took the grunt by surprise. Calling away a mega evolution so early was just a waste of resources. Those things didn't exactly recharge in an instant! "What are you doing? We're having a battle." They still waited and listened to the cosplayer's words. A part of them were happy to see a kindred spirit in Hoenn, somebody who could see past the petty bullshit of Rocket and the League and notice how the natural world was dying. But a conflicted expression crossed over onto Aqua's face.[break][break]

"So what are we going to do? Nobody listens. They’ll only intervene if there’s some kind of outside influence or something in it for people." Aqua’s tone lowered to a more doubtful and pestered tone. "There’s no other way for anybody else to willingly help until the problem is pushed past the brink. That’s just how humans are. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing until they get it in their heads. Even if I have to destroy every last council building in this region." [break][break]

Yet somehow in their tone, despite the treats and more, Andrea could pick up a hint of reluctance. As if their heart wasn't entirely in this plan of theirs. Aqua said nothing for a moment. Conflicting thoughts brewing in the maelstrom of thoughts inside of that blue head of hair. Could she just be lying? That had to be it. They couldn't imagine a place where she would do all this for them. "Wait, I know what you’re doing..I almost fell for it." They glared back at Andrea, gritting their teeth in annoyance. "Think you can get me to lower my guard, huh? You League people are all the same. Preaching about how ”Oh, there’s so much common ground between us, we can work together!” when all you do is destroy as much as Rocket. Icey, freeze that Salamance back into the stone age."[break][break]

The Lapras looked between Andrea and the Salamance but hesitated, letting out a soft noise as Aqua looked at their first Pokemon. "What do you mean I should hear them out? They’re lying to us!" They whined, the water-type still refusing to act. "We’re nothing alike! I know how it goes every time! You trust one League person, and they act all nice and pretty until you’ve served your purpose." Aqua turned back to Andrea, though received a well deserved slap on the back of their head from the Lapras. They knew those eyes well. Despite the relationship they had, she was still the “mother” of the group at the end of the day. They said nothing, fuming in place. [break][break]

"You can’t fool me. I know what you’re up to."

The PokéManiac frowned. “You’re right. They don’t listen to anyone but themselves… which is why we’ll have to be even LOUDER! Get so many people to join our cause that those at the top will have no choice but to listen!” She reasoned, feeling inspired by her own words.

Sadly, the young Rocket was not so easily swayed, accusing her of trickery. “I get that the League has hurt you in the past. Rocket has hurt me too, taking something from me that can never ever be replaced… but I’m willing to put that behind me if it means no-one else will have to get buried.” The trainer of dragons teared up. Her Salamence nuzzled up against her like an oversized emotional support animal, a gesture that was well received.

“It’s okay if you don’t trust me.” The onesie-clad woman continued. “The best way for two trainers to build trust is through a battle, but not like this. I’m talking about a proper battle! My Gym in Fallarbor Town is open to anyone who genuinely cares about their Pokémon, regardless if they’re League or Rocket. Come challenge me, then you’ll see if I’m lying or not.”

Having said her piece, the woman mounted her fully-rested Salamence, preparing for a takeoff. “By the way, my name’s Andrea! Hope to see you again soon!” She hollered.

And with that, the duo Flew away, but not before Meatloaf exchanged a meaningful look with Icey the Lapras, as if to communicate that he looked forward to their rematch.

Aqua's brows narrowed at Andrea. They didn't trust her at all. She was playing stupid, doing the same things that every other starry eyed nature lover would enjoy looking at the sign up sheets to some local river cleaning. A part of them still wasn't willing to listen to reason or give her any benefit of the doubt that this was supposed to somehow make them feel all the more connected to them. Yet the mention of losing something to Rocket wasn't exactly subtle. Their wall came down partially while she teared up at the mention of losing something close to her by Rocket, person or Pokemon. But it came right back up in no time flat. [break][break]

"I know what you're doing to me, and it won't work." Aqua hissed at the woman, furrowed brows and all. They refused to allow themselves to try and listen to her heretical speech, but she wanted them to battle again?! Aqua stood confused, speechless while Andrea spoke more about getting to know them better, causing the Rocket's balled fists to shake. They hated how this made them feel an enemy not showing immediate disdain for them to prove their assumptions correct. "B-But fine. I'll visit your stupid gym and fight you. Just leave me alone." [break][break]

Aqua and their Lapras watched as Andrea got on top of her Salamance and flew away, with the latter of which nodding towards the dragon-type. The Rocket was left alone to stew with their feelings. Still conflicted about the stranger in a onesie, the grunt cursed to themselves and went back to their Lapras with a sigh. "Don't say anything." They said, pouting at the ice-type while looking back to the radio by their side. A thought went across their head about reporting the trainer flying above them. She'd no doubt be taken care of... [break][break]

But Aqua just shook their head and continued to stand guard. [break][break]
