Rumours are always quite the good way to capture one curious Cass. However, an even better way are her pokémon, one of which has decided to venture out into the night and so she had to follow along, of course. Her Grafaiai Dermot's leading the charge, with her, her Trubbish Jon in her arms, of course, following. "Dermot, where the hell are you going to?" she asks as she jogs behind the surprisingly fast monkey, just to find that they apparently aren't alone as they come to a halt in front of a ... house?

"Oh, you're- you're Kazuya? From the Vital City Tournament- I'm Cass, if you remember."

The man believed in an afterlife. He also practiced respect for those who passed beyond the veil. Typically, he would leave the spectral uninterrupted. Perhaps offer a nod to a ghost as he passed by. But that was not the case when these spirits sought to harm or subjugate others. His mother had taught him some exorcism techniques, though he’d neglected to pursue any shrine training beyond that.

This particular town was important to him. He had spent many years playing in these very alleys. Tales that these streets were filled not with laughter but restless souls twisted his heart. While he could not find peace for himself—for war had tainted him—some part of him wished to give it to others.

When Cass stumbles upon him, stands att the corner of what was a happy home. A real estate sign is posted out front, but it’s apparent it’s been there a while. Its little steel peg legs are dulled with rust. His Bewear is lifted on its stout little legs. Beady eyes peer into the house in search of his so-called opponent. When the girl appears, the bear barely spares it a glance.

"I remember." He tried to never forget an opponent. A mitt-sized hand rose for pause.

“Kazu.” This girl has no reason to stand on formality. "Please." The scary bear offered up a soft smile.

"Kazu then," Cass repeats with a faint smile, also looking at the Bewear with the same. She is well-aware that the pokémon could crush her without any effort, but she's oddly calm in its presence still. "Do you know that house?" she asks, pointing ahead of her, squinting slightly as she tries to see things in the dimly lit darkness.

And, well, then.

"Dermot, for gods-!" she hastily runs after her Grafaiai that has jumped towards the house, seemingly in pursuit of something - and perhaps, almost seeming possessed-?! She does manage to snatch him up before he could actually enter the house, though that also means she's standing in front of that door now. "That is. Very spooky," she comments, her hand absent-mindedly going to the phone in her pocket.

“Thanks.” The modulator speaks back after a moment. It’s nice to find a kid who didn’t immediately stiffen seeing him. It probably helped that when he supposedly did his crimes, this girl would have been in diapers. Seeing her eyes slip to the Bewear, Kazuya’s smile grew. “That’s Natsu.” He didn’t call him harmless though. No Yoshida got far making stuff up.

Her question makess the man turn toward the house. Even though he’d been leaning against it, he hadn’t taken a good look at it. “I’m afraid not.” The man says after a moment. “It must have been built since I came here last.” Or there was a corner of this rinky-dink town he’d somehow missed. “Kind of strange actually.” Though the house looked new it also felt ancient. Like someone had dipped it in coffee to age it.

Golden eyes slid to the Grafaiai. He saw its muscles bunched. And predicted its leap. “Ah!” The man dove forward as if to catch Dermot. But the girl was faster. In that moment, he didn’t notice as his bear shuddered. “Spooky how?” The normally beaded eyes emptied. They resembled those of a hunting Sharpedo. “What’s wrong?”

Before anyone could answer, the Bewear charged the door. Wood exploded from the collision as Natsu’s muscular body sent it flying off its hinges.

The house sighed.

"Natsu, right!" Cass smiles faintly in the spooky atmosphere surrounding them, with Jon also giving his previous opponent a little wave. Her Grafaiai Dermot demands attention then, however, as he suddenly leaps. After successfully securing him, Cass smiles at Kazu for also attempting to help catch that little rascal, though he doesn't seem to pick up on the spooky vibes.

Unlike Natsu, who then fully charges the door. "YE!" Cass yelps, before shivering once more as the house seems to sigh. "Yeah, there's some ghost pokémon working here-" Cass murmurs as she hears a cackle from the empty hallway, seemingly beckoning them to come closer and enter.

And she feels herself moving before she could actually process what's going on.

HAUNTING ON A HILL

CASSANDRA X KAZUYA

THE CACKLING LURES CASSANDRA CLOSER AND CLOSER. Wood splinters scattered Kazuya Yoshida's BEWEAR rattle around her crawling, controlless shoes.

"come. come closer. closer!"

A deep human-like voice beckons for her. Curtains billow at the end of the hallway, their delicate, lace patterns betraying little, only darkness behind their veil. As she nears them, Kazuya Yoshida may be able to see a GOLDEN RING'S BORDER flanking either side of the corridor, granting him advance notice or time to warn or save Cassandra Kubrick.

From the curtains, a HOOPA emerges, wreathed in spectral shadows, its eyes bloodred. Despite its fearsome launch, the Djinn is in its spritely form.

With a cackle, the HOOPA attempts to grab Cassandra Kubrick or Jon, the Trubbish, through the curtain. Behind the curtain is no window, but a steep fall off a jagged cliff.

Should and when Cassandra Kubrick and Kazuya Yoshida avoid peril, the HOOPA will laugh:

"no fun! no fun at all! can't i have my fun while there's time? not a lot more to go. soon the sky will burn and none of you will know!"

The HOOPA will eventually depart, leaping through a ring.

One step after another is taken towards the hallway as Cass moves onward, following a voice ... both her and Jon are entirely compelled, only seeking to approach. And suddenly, something appears - eyes bloodred with mischivous malice, Hoopa reaches out for the smaller of the two.

As its arms take hold of Jon, almost taking him from Cass' arms, the spell breaks with a resounding shatter. "WH- NO!" she shouts, pulling back, but that little thing is way stronger than it seems like. Cass stumbles forward with Jon towards the curtain, and unfortunately, they don't merely meet a wall.

Instead, she starts going head- and arms-with-Jon-first towards crashing waves below and jagged rock beside - not fully through the portal, but dangerously close.

His Bewear staggers into the house as if pulled by invisible strings. Any attempts to get his attention are useless. And, when Kazuya attempts to return him, the red light glances off some strange, golden barrier.

There’s a silent hiss as his arms are turned into pincushions. Dull nails pull the splinters out as he pushes beyond the doorframe. The entire place makes his hair stand on end. It feels wrong in here. The Rocket’s lips press into a thin line. That’s when the cackling starts.

The kindler is much more reserved than Cassandra. Golden eyes—a perfect match for the magic around them—narrow at the sight in front of them. The curtain’s blowing strangely. It wasn’t the same way the wind was wailing outside. “Wait.” His electronic voice is lost in intensifying laughter. Then, he sees the rings. A man born to spiritualists, he recognizes the mark of the trickster god.

“Cass!” He barrels forward toward the curtain. His Bewear turns to block him, his snarl a perfect echo of the Hoopa’s deranged cackle. Surprisingly nimble for his size, Kazuya dodges around the stuffed bear’s deadly grasp. The mad god’s words are completely ignored as he focuses on what he can handle: the girl about to plummet to her death.

One arm wrapped around a stair bannister as he stretches to grab her by her shirt and jerk her back. “Hold on.” The ring was already closing shut.

Only when faced with the very real possibility of her own death does Cass finally perceive the cackle. It's too late if she had been alone - her Grafaiai might have been trailing back, but Dermot's by no means strong enough to pull them back. However, Kazu certainly is. In the last moment before the portal envelopes her and Jon entirely, a strong pull sends her flying in the opposite direction, causing her to unceremoniously land on the floor of the house - definitely haunted.

Her heartbeat's determined to pump blood into every little corner of her body, and she feels dizzy as it races against every enemy imagineable. Jon's full in shock in her arms, motionless. She still sees the long drop from the jagged cliff, rocks as sharp as knives to her side as she can only hope to fall straight into more blades, more stone that's pointing upwards at her to skewer her.

"no fun! no fun at all! can't i have my fun while there's time? not a lot more to go. soon the sky will burn and none of you will know!"

More cackling, as the trickster disappears, probably to traumatise more people.

"We should leave," Cass murmurs, slowly coming to herself, shaking her head, adding, "Thank you." She doesn't want to imagine being alone in this situation ...

As Cassandra flies backward, Kazu positions himself in front of the portal. For a moment, he looks like a samurai facing down the gates of hell. Muscles bulge along his arms like whipcords. The thing’s words send a chill down his spine. He is a kindler. He knows what it is to burn. And there is no ignoring it.

Golden eyes narrow at the djinn as he prepares for it to attack.
[break][break]

But it flees into a portal. This is not the first time this Pokemon has dispensed prophecies and vanished from view.. It seems to enjoy watching people get hurt. Coward. Notably, there’s still evidence of its influence. Burn holes where its rings once stood and dark-type energy hovering in the air.

Kazuya takes a deep breath. “You’re welcome.” A large hand reaches down to help Cassandra to her feet. “Come on up.” The thing might decide one ‘prank’ wasn’t enough. Normally a conscientious guy, the mythical’s appearance made him forget the empty-eyed bear behind him. CREAK! A shadow falls over the pair as the Bewear bears a mouthful of needle-sharp feet.

Kazuya grunts in pain as ivory claws dig deep into his side. The bear lifts and bends. With a roar, the bear brings his trainer over his head and crashing to the ground. “Nngh!” The man’s breath escapes in a puff of air. The claws lift again over the girl. Before the Bewear can lunge, his bruised trainer locks his arms around the fighting type’s forearms and pulls back.

“Have a—” His radio is elbowed off his waist. “---psy—-type—” It lets loose sparks as he wraps his arm around the Bewear’s muscular neck. He presses but it’s like trying to stop a steam train.

CRACK! The bear smashes him against the wall. A shattered family portrait drops to the floor.

The horror isn't quite over yet - even as the portals have faded, there's something else to consider. Cass is lucky that Kazu's taking the brunt, though the imagery is burning itself into her mind as something she really doesn't want to think about too much.

"Wh-! NATSU!" she shouts, terrified as the bear's barely contained by his trainer. But there's- she looks at the two poison types that are with her, both of which are not helpful here ... though Jon's already valiantly jumped in Kazu's direction with a Protect underway, even if he's quickly batted away uselessly.

Dermot is more uncertain what to do, as his last battle, before he got to Cass, is quite a while ago ... ... but something rather unexpected happens.

Apparently, Cody, her Slowpoke, has trailed behind them as well. At the doorway, his face is barely visible over the slight elevation, and he seems rather unamused. Like a cat being acused and looking over the table over with salad in front of it, almost.

And he uses Disable on the Bewear.

Glass from the portrait digs a line into Kazuya’s back. Red blossoms through the fabric of his top. A pained noise escapes between his lips, one thing that doesn’t need a modulator. “Nngh!” He sees stars as the bear goes for another slam. Temporarily numb, one arm slips from Natsu’s neck. Feeling the loss of pressure, the bear spins. With a snarl, he snags his trainer’s leg and slams him to the ground.

The air is knocked from his lungs. The thud is meaty and accompanied by the crack of a bannister he bounced off of.

Immediately, the corrupted bear turns back to its prey. What it sees in its maddened state isn’t clear. But it seems to threaten him. As he stomps toward the teenage, his trainer struggles to get back to his feet. Something stabs him in his chest—a broken rib? Though he wanted to shout a warning, all that emerged was a strangled noise. From this angle, he notices the tottering form of the Slowpoke. A silent smile tugs at his lips.

As he draws close to Cass, the bear’s left paw lights up with pure fighting energy. His Hammer Arm aims to turn Cassandra into a nail. But the attack sputters out. His fist sails harmlessly through the air. “Mrrgh?” He gives his fist a shake like it’s a broken remote. This confusion gives his trainer all the time he needs. With a grunt, he slams into the Bewear from the side, like a professional quarterback.

The bear slams to the ground with a pained snarl. But this gives Kazuya enough time to grab the ball from under his shirt and slam it into the bear’s side. After a moment, he scoops up his broken modulator and staggers to his feet.

His face as he tries—fruitlessly—to hold it back together is almost comical. Like a cat whose toy has snapped in half. With a final, furitive glance at the abandoned house, he limps his way outside.
