Kazuya owed this woman his life. She had fought to free him from the dark bowels of the League with nothing but moving speeches. He would do anything for her. His debt to Rocket was heavy but his to hers was Atlassian.

So, when the request came, the mercenary was quick to sit up from the couch. His Bunnelby slippers were quickly replaced by a pair of thick soled boots. What remained of his Cinnamon Toast Crunch was quickly swallowed. A quick golden eyed glance told his Bewear to follow suit. “Let’s go.” His digital voice box broadcasted.

The taller man stays in the back corner of the elevator. He looks for all of the world like a bodyguard with a valuable dignitary. Her remark earns a simple nod. “Understood.” There is a slight pause as the elevator dings. The doors slide open.

Natsu springs out first. But the hallway’s empty and dark.

“Tell me what you need me to do.” Kazuya steps into the hallway. His eyes narrow at the light in the woman’s office. Though this did not sound like a physical threat, the audacity made him want to punch the man.

The white-haired man simply nodded to the dry remark. Perhaps that comment had been unnecessary. Golden eyes stay focused on the ground in front of them as they walk. No matter how strong—or empowered—the person, they were only human. And even a simple Raichu could quickly drop a Copperajah.

The question earns a thoughtful hum. “I found him by a sea route. He seemed lost.” Kazuya is sure he had been owned by someone in the past (logo aside). It did not seem he understood surviving in the wild. “Devlin was there as well.” If the speaker was capable of sighing, it would have done so. “He is an…interesting man.” Somehow still living for racing as the world around him fell apart.

Golden eyes slip to the logo on the steel-type’s chest. “That business closed almost five decades ago.” Apparently, it’s practices with Pokemon were too extreme for even olden standards.

Suddenly, there path forward is cut off by a toppled platform. Konsento beeps at it. Magnetism tries to pull it out of the way, but it is firmly stuck—surrounding wires wrap around it like some sea beast’s tentacles. “Hm.” He didn’t want to damage the area any more than necessary.

Perhaps simply cutting it would be enough? “Do you have something with a blade?” Unfortunately, his Pokemon collection was still relatively limited.

Glass from the portrait digs a line into Kazuya’s back. Red blossoms through the fabric of his top. A pained noise escapes between his lips, one thing that doesn’t need a modulator. “Nngh!” He sees stars as the bear goes for another slam. Temporarily numb, one arm slips from Natsu’s neck. Feeling the loss of pressure, the bear spins. With a snarl, he snags his trainer’s leg and slams him to the ground.

The air is knocked from his lungs. The thud is meaty and accompanied by the crack of a bannister he bounced off of.

Immediately, the corrupted bear turns back to its prey. What it sees in its maddened state isn’t clear. But it seems to threaten him. As he stomps toward the teenage, his trainer struggles to get back to his feet. Something stabs him in his chest—a broken rib? Though he wanted to shout a warning, all that emerged was a strangled noise. From this angle, he notices the tottering form of the Slowpoke. A silent smile tugs at his lips.

As he draws close to Cass, the bear’s left paw lights up with pure fighting energy. His Hammer Arm aims to turn Cassandra into a nail. But the attack sputters out. His fist sails harmlessly through the air. “Mrrgh?” He gives his fist a shake like it’s a broken remote. This confusion gives his trainer all the time he needs. With a grunt, he slams into the Bewear from the side, like a professional quarterback.

The bear slams to the ground with a pained snarl. But this gives Kazuya enough time to grab the ball from under his shirt and slam it into the bear’s side. Wheezing from a mixture of adrenaline, pain, and exertion, the Kindler stays on his knees. Turning to the door, he offers a respectful nod to the Slowpoke and its trainer. After a moment, he scoops up his broken modulator and staggers to his feet.

His face as he tries—fruitlessly—to hold it back together is almost comical. Like a cat whose toy has snapped in half. With a final, furitive glance at the abandoned house, he limps his way outside.

As Cassandra flies backward, Kazu positions himself in front of the portal. For a moment, he looks like a samurai facing down the gates of hell. Muscles bulge along his arms like whipcords. The thing’s words send a chill down his spine. He is a kindler. He knows what it is to burn. And there is no ignoring it.

Golden eyes narrow at the djinn as he prepares for it to attack.

But it flees into a portal. This is not the first time this Pokemon has dispensed prophecies and vanished from view.. It seems to enjoy watching people get hurt. Coward. Notably, there’s still evidence of its influence. Burn holes where its rings once stood and dark-type energy hovering in the air.

Kazuya takes a deep breath. “You’re welcome.” A large hand reaches down to help Cassandra to her feet. “Come on up.” The thing might decide one ‘prank’ wasn’t enough. Normally a conscientious guy, the mythical’s appearance made him forget the empty-eyed bear behind him. CREAK! A shadow falls over the pair as the Bewear bears a mouthful of needle-sharp feet.

Kazuya grunts in pain as ivory claws dig deep into his side. The bear lifts and bends. With a roar, the bear brings his trainer over his head and crashing to the ground. “Nngh!” The man’s breath escapes in a puff of air. The claws lift again over the girl. Before the Bewear can lunge, his bruised trainer locks his arms around the fighting type’s forearms and pulls back.

“Have a—” His radio is elbowed off his waist. “---psy—-type—” It lets loose sparks as he wraps his arm around the Bewear’s muscular neck. He presses but it’s like trying to stop a steam train.

CRACK! The bear smashes him against the wall. A shattered family portrait drops to the floor.

Kazuya notices his superior’s oddly quiet mood, but he makes no move to question it. He has never been one to pry into other people’s business. It ended up entangling you in a bunch of stuff you wanted nothing to do with. Life got messy when other people took center stage. Especially when you started questioning orders.

To avoid the wires, Kazuya calls forth his secret weapon in this endeavor: a beaten up Magnezone. It had wandered near the shore during a heated moment with gym leader Josh Devlin. It was big enough to carry him and his Bewear over the wires. Honestly, even if the fighting type hadn’t boarded, Kazuya doubt he’d notice the issue. His fur deadened pretty much everything.

As they entered the building, Kazuya took a moment to look around. Golden eyes flicked around the room without comment. “I know how to deal with fallen wires.” Being a kindler—a volcano firefighter—meant running into a lot of electrical issues. He could put the fires out, but putting things back together? That was a job for an electrician. “But Konsento may.” A hand reached out to tap at the Magnezone’s cover. Its antenna pulsed with light, its magnets spending idly in the air.

“I would follow the signs of impact.” A large hole had been punched through the center of the facility. Whether it was a flying Pokemon, a rock, or even a vessel is unclear.

With a series of beeps, the floating magnet flows forward. Briefly, an engraved logo is visible on its body—the logo for a controversial, long defunct power company.

Like even mighty mountains, all things wear down over time. It seems the armor is developing cracks.

The elder Rocket watches as the bear is frozen in place. Tethered to the earth, it has no choice but to bring its front feet down. The ground shakes beneath them. But what power there was in the gesture has waned. The great bear roars in protest. Beneath its shimmer, the great beast is quivering.

“Thank you, Maki-Chan.” He gestures Haniyakana back. When felling an opponent, there is no reason to do so with the indignity of a dogpile.

Kazuya takes a deep breath as he rotates a Pokeball in his hands. This beast was powerful, and a fit for his own team. If the young woman minded, he would later make it up to her. “You fought well, friend.” He bows his head to the Ursaluna. It thrashes against its icy chains as it stares down the other bear. The man turns to his Bewear. “Finish this.” The plushie bear nodded.

Drawing back a fist, he slammed a Hammer Arm into the Ursaluna’s snout. The blow lifts the bear’s front legs off the ground. Blood drips from a now shattered maw. With a flick of the wrist, the ex-champion lobs a Pokeball at it.

“It’ll need to be studied,” He offers in way of explanation.

Perhaps this coating can be harnessed by all.

The man is also no scientist. But he was raised by a deeply spiritual woman with a will like iron and a panache for storytelling. The glow and behavior tickle at the back of his mind. There’s something familiar about it. Her question makes him pause. “I think so.”

His digital voice murmurs. A little rhyme comes to mind. It’d been said to him as blankets were pulled around his head. “Noble Pokemon with form of gold.” It’s much less charming when it sounds like a cheap AI voiceover. Protect your domain with this mighty glow.” This last word hands over them as the bear backs away from the wall. The gold at the impact point seems to be cracked, like spiderwebs across a mirror.

The Ursaluna slowly turns to face its foes. It shakes its great head. Gold falls from it as it prepares for another charge. But its claws remain on the earth, suddenly robbed of their ability to charge the group before it. “Good thinking.” Kazuya murmurs as the bear’s go-to attack is torn away. “We’ll keep it busy.” He nods to his two Pokemon, both of them relatively fresh. “Strike when you see an opening.”

So far, the girl had shown herself able to think on her feet. That would be trial enough for now. Besides, he wanted to take this beast head on. It was a lot more fun than he first gave it credit for. “Natsu! Hanayakana! Hammer Arm! Aqua Cutter!” His grin is downright feral, like something you’d see on a fairytale demon.

His Bewear staggers into the house as if pulled by invisible strings. Any attempts to get his attention are useless. And, when Kazuya attempts to return him, the red light glances off some strange, golden barrier.

There’s a silent hiss as his arms are turned into pincushions. Dull nails pull the splinters out as he pushes beyond the doorframe. The entire place makes his hair stand on end. It feels wrong in here. The Rocket’s lips press into a thin line. That’s when the cackling starts.

The kindler is much more reserved than Cassandra. Golden eyes—a perfect match for the magic around them—narrow at the sight in front of them. The curtain’s blowing strangely. It wasn’t the same way the wind was wailing outside. “Wait.” His electronic voice is lost in intensifying laughter. Then, he sees the rings. A man born to spiritualists, he recognizes the mark of the trickster god.

“Cass!” He barrels forward toward the curtain. His Bewear turns to block him, his snarl a perfect echo of the Hoopa’s deranged cackle. Surprisingly nimble for his size, Kazuya dodges around the stuffed bear’s deadly grasp. The mad god’s words are completely ignored as he focuses on what he can handle: the girl about to plummet to her death.

One arm wrapped around a stair bannister as he stretches to grab her by her shirt and jerk her back. “Hold on.” The ring was already closing shut.

Sootopolis was in shambles. Walking through its drenched streets was a solemn, quiet affair. It brought the atmosphere of a cemetery to the forefront of Kazu’s mind. While his battles were in Petalburg, he felt some sense of responsibility for the state of the crater city. For days after, Kazuya and his Bewear toiled in silence to restore the city.

It was a comforting distraction from the disaster around them. It also reminded him of why he became a kindler in the first place. It was just unfortunate that he found more corpses than survivors.

Today, he was on a mission: restore power to a big slice of town. To be more accurate, he was assisting on a mission. Ahead of him, was a man known for his service to Rocket and love of his husband. It gave Kazuya some hope for himself. His silent contemplation of his partner paused as they came to the entrance of their destination. “Hm.” A large hand reached up to grab his Bewear’s shoulder.

All of the legendary thrashing had damaged a power station. Large chunks of rock left it looking like a mole halfway through a dig. Wires and steel spiraled from the entrance like the limbs of some futuristic Cthulhu. He smells wires. Gold eyes lock on the path ahead. “Careful.” The man’s voice is accented by static. A hand scoops up a rock to toss it into a nearby puddle. Sparks fly from where it lands. “Wire’s live.” Which was a good sign for them.

Kazuya does not comment on the battle. In truth, after so many years without speaking, he sometimes forgot that he could. Now that the girl’s out of harm’s way (for now) he takes a moment to dust himself out. He’s not a fan of being dirty. One of the worst parts of being a Kindler, honestly.

The smaller bear braces itself as the Annihilape launches its attack. His arms are ripped free as the larger ursine is sent crashing to the ground. As the ball bounces off of it, the fighting type staggers away. Beady eyes narrow to slits as it stares down the Ursaluna. He and his companion seem to still as the bear lays at their feet. Like their trainer, they have been raised to be honorable.

“I am assuming the glow is to blame.” Kazuya responds.

One does not attack a fallen enemy. You offer them a hand up to guide them to their feet. While the Bewear stands menacingly, the Quaquaval backons the bear to its feet. The water fowl’s feet beat a rapid tattoo on the ground. His tail gives a decisive shake, scattering glittering particles around the clearing.

Slowly, the bear forces itself back to its feet. But now it’s on all four legs. Its breath erupts in irritated bursts as it stares at the combatants around it. “Fall back.” Kazuya commands his two Pokemon as the ursine fixes its eyes on the woman and her monkey. Its lip lifts in a snarl. It does not take a translator to know it was unhappy with its attempted capture.

With a pained roar, it charges the Annihilape in a Headlong Rush.

“Thanks.” The modulator speaks back after a moment. It’s nice to find a kid who didn’t immediately stiffen seeing him. It probably helped that when he supposedly did his crimes, this girl would have been in diapers. Seeing her eyes slip to the Bewear, Kazuya’s smile grew. “That’s Natsu.” He didn’t call him harmless though. No Yoshida got far making stuff up.

Her question makess the man turn toward the house. Even though he’d been leaning against it, he hadn’t taken a good look at it. “I’m afraid not.” The man says after a moment. “It must have been built since I came here last.” Or there was a corner of this rinky-dink town he’d somehow missed. “Kind of strange actually.” Though the house looked new it also felt ancient. Like someone had dipped it in coffee to age it.

Golden eyes slid to the Grafaiai. He saw its muscles bunched. And predicted its leap. “Ah!” The man dove forward as if to catch Dermot. But the girl was faster. In that moment, he didn’t notice as his bear shuddered. “Spooky how?” The normally beaded eyes emptied. They resembled those of a hunting Sharpedo. “What’s wrong?”

Before anyone could answer, the Bewear charged the door. Wood exploded from the collision as Natsu’s muscular body sent it flying off its hinges.

The man believed in an afterlife. He also practiced respect for those who passed beyond the veil. Typically, he would leave the spectral uninterrupted. Perhaps offer a nod to a ghost as he passed by. But that was not the case when these spirits sought to harm or subjugate others. His mother had taught him some exorcism techniques, though he’d neglected to pursue any shrine training beyond that.

“Kazu.” This girl has no reason to stand on formality. "Please." The scary bear offered up a soft smile.

As Maki paused to prepare, Kazuya nodded in approval. People often assumed he was a hothead—rushing in with zero thought. A common attribution to the muscular. But he had not gotten to champion without the ability to strategize. “Good thinking.” The man’s digital voice emerged. “We’ll keep it busy.”

Shaking its head, the Ursaluna snarled at its attackers. It perfectly embodied the past primal age it once represented. . The gold aura intensified as its attention pivoted between the champion’s Pokemon. It reared up on its back legs and loosed a deafening roar. Plate-sized paws spread wide as the beast slammed its torso into the ground. “Move!” Kazuya dove toward Maki as the High Horsepower turned the earth beneath them into a miniature mountain range.

Trees fell as the ground beneath their roots vanished.

Though the Quaquaval dodged, the Bewear held its ground. Muscular arms braced itself as rocks washed over it in waves. Blood drew ruby lines across its pink fur. But still Natsu stood as if caught in a ritual. Kazuya hit the ground with a grunt. He turned golden eyes to his Quaquaval. “Freeze it.” The duck landed on its tiptoes. In the next heartbeat, it unleashed twin Ice Spinners at the bear’s feet.

The sharpened ice skewered the bear’s paws in place. “Payback.” With a devilish snarl, the teddy bear threw every inch of the Ursaluna’s power back at it. As its attack hit, he gestured Maki forward. There was an opening to be captured. Let’s see how she does.
