His composure hid his blush. He’d never been comfortable with compliments. “Is it?” The tall man chuckled awkwardly. A hand lifted to tuck a strand of hair behind his ear. “It’s been a while since someone said that.” Sure, Kazuya had been declared innocent, but that didn’t stop people from treating him like a criminal. And his size scared people, especially with the scars and tattoos.

“Consider it done.” He hummed back. People deserve to be referred to as whatever they choose. It was good manners.

When the order is given, the man nods. There’s a twinkle in his eyes. Some part of him enjoys showing off, and this was something he thought he could manage. “Understood.”
[break][break]

From his belt, he pulls out a Pokeball. Instead of his standard Bewear, it’s a Mamoswine that joins him. Then, a Wooper pops up. “Mina, use Muddy Water.” With a bobble-headed nod, the water-type summons a wave upon the steel army. The creatures don’t seem bothered by it. But that wasn’t the point.[break][break]

A broad hand tangles in the Mamoswine’s thick fur. It is a gift from his little sister. “Blizzard.” With a trumpeting cry, the ice-type unleashed the wolves of winter upon the army in front of them. And, as water does, it begins to freeze.

Before he can see the results of his work, the ground quakes beneath him. “Move!” As the ground opens up beneath Nomi, the man tries to grab her in a protective cocoon of muscles and fabric.

Kazuya sighed as his ruse was revealed. He had no intention of actually hurting Aaron. He just wanted to shake him up a bit. Use his size and musculature to get the spitfire out of here. Instead, he faced down an angry tree and a glowing mallet. “There is no honor in sending soldiers into a battle you’re unwilling to fight yourself.” He just wanted to end this before one of the idiots got hurt. “You kids have no idea what the heck you’re doing.”

Sure, the nurse wasn’t a kid, but she was younger. And, in his mind, getting tortured for half a decade took you out of the young adult category.

As the Togedamaru bore down on the Bewear, Kazuya felt his face wrinkle. “You strike at a retreating opponent and I’m the one without honor?” A sigh clouded the interior of his mask. “I warned you.” The hedgehog smashed into the Bewear’s back. But the power of the blow was halved by the fighting type’s thick fur. Its dopey face transformed into something rabid. Its mitt paws filled with a sickly purple light as it spun to grab the rodent by a stubby limb.

If they knew the Kindler, they'd know what came next. His strategy is one of reversal. Of tanking hits and throwing them right back at his opponent. The guy (and his Pokemon) knew how to take a hit. But these two didn't see a former champion. They just saw some nameless Rocket in a Shiftry mask.

If successful, the Bewear would repeat the gesture with the other side. His Payback pulsed with power as powerful muscles attempted to turn the rat to mush.

But he could not focus on that. [break][break]
The man was surprisingly nimble given his size. He managed to jump out of the way of the swing, though the shockwave sent him flying back. He slammed into a car with an angry hiss. Kazuya shook his head like a bull with a headache as he grabbed one last Pokeball. This time, a Zeraora dropped to the ground. It was almost lackadaisical as it stared down the tree.

A Snarl rocketed from its open maw.

Cracks appeared in the protect screen screen as the Raging Bolt scrambled for purchase on the shield. The Wooper’s Mud Bomb went wide as the thing bent its neck to secure its center of balance. Then, the dragon slammed into its back. With a snarl, it turned to unleash a stream of purple flames on it—a testament to its dragon typing.

Grumpy about missing, the Wooper stomped its feet on the ground. Its little Earthquake stopped as something much stronger sent the earth bucking around them. With a grunt, Kazuya grabbed a nearby light pole.

The earth erupted into angry spires around them. The two had the high ground now. A nearby building collapsed and he vanished beneath the rubble.

In the wake of the muddy water, corpses and weaponry now line the streets. They lay in wet grass like macabre landscaping.

The girl’s shouts draw a smile beneath Kazuya’s mask. Though the eyes above it remain just as grim. “I have a job to do.” The man acknowledges with a nod. In a different time, perhaps they would greet one another at the grocery store. “Just like you.” Though he did not agree with their methods, he owed Rocket everything. His life and his freedom came at a cost.

Her Swampert reminds him of nabi park and happier times. A simple tournament that didn't have to end in bloodshed.

When its attack lands, the Raging Bolt roars in triumph. Sparks of electricity jump between its deadly fangs, looking for all the world like braces. It does not noise as the Wooper—unaffected by its electric tantrum—toddles up to join it. “There is no wartime mercy without surrender.” His higher-ups had warned these people. They could have thrown down their arms or chosen to retreat. They didn’t.

It wasn’t like Rocket cared if some grandma died or not. At the talk of finishing him off, Kazuya laughs. “Someone’s counting their Torchics before they hatch.” The Raging Bolt was far from the only creature remaining. His Wooper was also prepared for war. This battlefield was nothing compared to what he faced in prison.

When the Swampert appears, it doesn’t take an ex-champion to know what’s coming next. “Body Press.” Surprisingly graceful considering its body plan, the Raging Bolt takes to the air. It aims to come down on top of the axolotl like a pile of bricks. Though Kazuya notices the Dragapult’s appearance, it is the rat that draws his attention.

The whistling of the approaching projectile draws the pink bear’s attention. With a confused expression, the beast moves to catch the little steel type in mitt-like paws. But Kazuya’s voice cracks out like thunder. Or, to be more accurate, like a radio with its dial turned all the way up. He drops his hand from the dial. “Keep going.”

With a look of confusion, the young Bewear obeys.[break][break]

His Wooper meanwhile stares between the Pokemon in front of it for a moment. But it knows its options against the Swampert are limited. They were basically siblings or something! So, instead, it waits for the Dragapult to reappear and throws out a Mud Shot at the back of its head.[break][break]

It's then that Kazuya makes a decision. There was no time for this.

He rushes Aaron.

thread summary: Kazuya enters a Rocket tournament to test his new team's mettle. It doesn't go as he wishes.[break]

why is it important?: This event gave me an opportunity to learn about Kazuya's battling style and how he fits into Rocket as a whole. It also allowed me to see how his ideals can sometimes be at odds with what he has to do.

“The vines made that difficult.” Kazuya scoffed. It was easy to see his mouth never moved beneath his mask. “Do not always count on a safe withdrawal.” If it were that simple, this thoroughfare would not be littered with the bodies of Pokemon and trainers alike. It would not stink of smoke and the expectation of decay.

Kazuya might have commented on the Venusaur’s name in a different world. It was adorable. Maybe he’d even raise a toast of green tea to it. But, now, his intent was to kill it. To destroy the weapons of this war as surely as the soldiers. The Earthquake makes his teeth rattle. A hand reaches out for a light post beside him as the ground bucks beneath them. With a crash, a car falls into a crevasse. A water mane sprays upward, its created rainbow ironically soft.

Quick to follow up on its first attack, the Wooper summons a Muddy Water against its foes. As the tidal wave hits—buoying corpses—something whistles above. The little water type looks up in astonishment with a frown. Did I do that? A deafening boom erupts. Blood pours from Kazuya’s ears as they ring. A hand lifts to his helmet in a numb sense of disbelief. Conrad did it? The man seemed to be easygoing. A jester with an easy smile and an easier manner.

War did strange things to people.
[break][break]

The Bewear jerks its head toward the noise. It stares at the Spiky Shield for a moment. “Go.” Kazuya’s voice pierces through the Bewear’s irritation. His trainer sweeps an arm toward the hospital. With a snarl at the hedgehog, the gargantuan fighting type races toward the collapsing building. Its pink fades beneath a cloud of dust as it gets to work.

If the higher-ups kept doing this stupid shit, there’d be no one left to improve the world for.
[break][break]

“You take me for an honorless cad,” Kazuya replies to Aaron’s pronouncement. As the pair argue, he makes no move to strike—proof that he isn’t that guy. He could see what happened next. These morons would run right back to the fire. And they’d be torn apart by the people who’d pushed the button

The best cure for these wannabe heroes? Crushing them. “Your friend’s right.” He wishes he could make his voice more gravelly. But it’s always the same tone. “You need to focus.”

From his belt, he pulls out another Pokeball. From it a Raging Bolt erupts. Its blue markings flare as it unleashes an Ancient Power on its opponents.

The man cannot help but wonder at his opponent's hubris. They are surrounded by the craters of war, and yet they act as if this is a typical battle. The girl goes so far as to grin. But then she throws a question at him.

It is not a difficult question to answer. It is not what he wants of Petalburg. Politics were never his things. "Some control." The radio at his side crackles as he answers,"Others freedom." An ironic goal considering it would only be achieved with boots on people's neck.
[break][break]

"Maybe." Kazuya's modulator is full of static.

"I don't see us running." The sleeping Emolga is soon covered in a layer of draining vines. Like Sleeping Beauty in her moth-eaten canopy, the rodent soon disappears from view. A Shadow Ball is fired at her. "Cowards."

As the pair turn their attentions to the Wooper, Kazuya rushes toward Mineru. His heart fills with dread as he reaches her still form. The Shadow Ball slams into the shield and cracks it. The Leech Seed deadens the blow as the squirrel's slumber turns to something more visceral.

Muscular hands move to tear the leaves apart.
[break][break]

The precipices that erupt from it manage to shield the Wooper from the worst of the Power Whip. But one catches the axolotl on the feeler and sends it bouncing into a rock's embrace.

If the man was less honorable, they would be dead. The pair took time to discuss their plans—completely ignoring the enemy before them.But Kazuya merely waited. Golden eyes drifted to the Emolga on his shoulder. It merely lifted tiny shoulders in a shrug. Then, the girl reached a consensus.

It seemed it would be two against one. How righteous.

As Aaron spoke, the man’s countenance hardened beneath his mask. The League had tortured him. Sold his Pokemon off like meat at a butcher Pokemon. Imprisoned him for years. “Depends on your perspective.” At least Rocket was honest about what it was. They were Liepards that were pretty forward about eating your face. They didn’t wine and dine you first.

The Emolga’s attacks are swift. But the Leech Seed manages to catch her on the tail as she bounces back from the Gengar. Another flies toward her arms. She catches it in a tiny paw—a true attendee of Kazuya’s school of turning an opponent’s work against it. Signs of his paralysis arc across the ghoul’s purple skin. As she turns, the squirrel finds herself stumbling. Robbed of her speed, the Gengar’s psychic attack sends her slumping. “Hmph.”

Her eyes see her trainer’s gesture. As Mineru collapses, she tosses a Leech Seed at the Gengar’s open mouth. Kazuya’s mechanical voice cuts through the air. “Light Screen.” A thin blanket of light falls over the now-dozing squirrel.

The Wooper meanwhile fares better. She dances drunkenly out of the plant's way, watching as it sprouts in a nearby crack. “Woop! Wo!” She unleashes a Yawn at the other combatants.

Why let her bestie nap alone?

Dropping the woman he’d tugged from the wreckage to the ground, a Bewear turns to stare.

A cloud of dust erupts as Natsu pushes over a cracked wall. Beneath it, two kids huddle in a bathtub with an old, white-furred Poochenya. As the children yap like ill-tempered Yamper, Kazuya’s eyes drift toward the movement. “Hm.” The man briefly catches the fighting type’s eyes. He makes a dismissive gesture. With a rippling of muscles, the bear moves on to the next building.

Sure, he is a Rocket now, but he was a Kindler first. Unless someone orders him otherwise, he intends to keep battle to combatants. Which, unfortunately, these children had decided to become. But there would be no Super Saiyan moment. Nor would he dishonor them by showing mercy. If they wished to act like adults, he would treat them as such.

His eyes crawl over the Rockets before him. Many are newer to the organization—children with little combat experience. “Only six?” Around the man, there are more League uniforms. At least one head is facing the wrong direction.

At the talk of her not caring who he was, the giant man feigns woundedness. His hand reaches to his chest as if it’d been pierced by her arrows. The chortles that follow are warm if scripted. “The only ones being hurt are yourself.” Kazuya’s mechanical voice emerges in a flurry of static. As the Venusaur emerges, Natu turns to face the demon on his right shoulder.

As Aaron turns to insult his rescuer, Kazuya laughs. “At least we can agree on something.” The League was incompetent. Nothing more than a brigade of hypocrites led by a different kind of monster. Their hands were dyed in blood just like his.

Surprisingly fast, Kazuya ducks out of the way of the Sludge Bomb. His movements aim to protect his little friends. The poison splattered across his cheek and gnawed through his uniform’s shoulder. “I warned you.”

In the same movement, he launches the Wooper from his shoulder. With a grinning gurgle, it launches a Mud Bomb at Aaron’s ghoulish friend. The Emolga uses that motion to launch herself into the smoky air above the citizen warrior. She launched herself forward with an Acrobatics aiming to end the strike with a paralyzing Nuzzle.

Notably, he made no move to attack Airi. She hadn’t thrown a punch.

In the distance, the hospital rises. Its silhouette will soon be a memory. [break][break]“Road’s off-limits kids.” Muscular arms fold across the kindler’s chest. It looked like a boy (and some nurse) had decided to test his mettle. The blonde kid stared up at him with eyes full of defiance. [break][break]At the talk of numbers, the masked man turns to observe the empty street behind him. “Turn around.”

Cold golden eyes stare down at Aaron’s pronouncement. His nostrils exhale in a silent huff. The air fills with static as his modulator pipes up. A giant of a man, he seems far more threatening than the Emolga perched on his left shoulder. Sparks race across the Emolga’s cheeks as they bare pointed incisors. This air of intimidation is furthered by the demonic Shiftry mask on his face.

His radio’s volume increases. “I won’t tell you again.” The Wooper on his right shoulder wears its species stereotypical grin. It taps lackadaisical on his shoulder. Beady eyes glitter weirdly in the destruction around them.

His Bewear is absent. And, if astute, someone might notice a pink shape in the rubble.
