Cillian Quinn

Haunted houses were a fun attraction that he rarely got to indulge, but the social media uproar about Foothill Town had created the perfect storm. Dozens of people were visiting with friends and filming videos of their experiences. The abandoned town was filled with creatures that went bump in the night. Naturally, Clover had sent a viral ghost hunting video to Cillian to see if he was interested in checking it out for himself. [break][break]

This left the two of them at the door step of a white, creaking house. Dust coated the porch, which meant none of the streamers that had visited the town so far had managed to hit this house. Clover basically bounced from foot to foot at the prospect of exploring it first. [break][break]

"Are you ready, Mr. Cillian? We're in good hands with Shuckle here." The rock pokemon had the most determined expression on its face, and slowly charged forward as Clover opened the red door for them all.

He's not one for ghosts. Ghost towns though? An archaeologist's dream. He wasn't technically an archaeologist, having specialized in Pokémon fossils instead of human ruins, but he had the passion for it. That had to count for something.[break][break]

Apparently, it counted enough for clover matamata to invite him out.[break][break]

"Ooh, untouched." Cillian swipes a finger over a dust-covered railing. His eyes gleam. "Who knows what we'll see in there?"[break][break]

Ghosts, Clover's probably hoping. Cillian's more interested in books, antiques, relics of whoever had lived here... and maybe what had made them leave. His heart flutters with the thought.[break][break]

"Ready," the underboss affirms, releasing one of his own Pokemon for light. Puca pads calmly after Shuckle, the ILLUMINA SYLVEON casting an unsettling pale glow perfect for the whole haunted ambience of the place.

He marches with unearned confidence through the house, choosing to go left from the landing instead of immediately up the stairs or to the room on the right. It's a living room, with a fireplace and an ugly green couch. The walls are overwhelmed by framed photographs, albums, and multi-media art. [break][break]

"These people were weird," Clover immediately judges. There's almost no negative space on the room's walls, but there's barely any furniture on the floor. It's a little unsettling. [break][break]

They pause at a photograph of someone listening to music with a walkman. "They had a super ugly phone?"

Following more slowly, but with equal confidence, Cillian's disappointed to find that the living room is minimally furnished. He was hoping for cabinets full of antiques, maybe a side table full of old letters.

He steps up curiously when Clover mentions a phone, then laughs.

"Arceus, you make me feel old." He tries not to think of his age, of every year closer to his inevitable grave. "That's not a phone, it's a... hm, like a music player? But portable. They called it a 'walkman', which is a stupid name, but anyway."

That dated the photograph to somewhere in the 80s or late 70s.
[break][break]
"I wonder if they have one of those really old computers somewhere. Ah, I doubt this place has electricity, so we probably couldn't get it to run either way..."

They cup their chin as they re-examine the photo with Cillian's input. "It just plays music?" It seemed silly to them to make something that could only do one task, but he supposed they didn't have Rotom technology way back when. The idea of an old timey computer made them laugh. "Doesn't it take like two years to use those computers anyways?" And they were the size of a Stoutland, really. [break][break]

She turns to take in the rest of the wall and its oddities. She's drawn to a golden mask, hung up without a protective glass covering. Something's off about it. They stare for a long moment before it dawns on them that there's zero dust on the mask. It's newly placed.[break][break]

And then the mask moves. [break][break]

Clover yelps in surprise and throws themselves backwards, landing on the ground, as the mask flies forward. The ghostly apparition of a Yamask appears around it. It spews several will-o-wisps around the room. As one descends towards Clover, Shuckle shoots a sticky web to wrap up the flame wisp and knock it away - dissipating the fire by the time the webbed ball lands across the room.

"I never had one," Cillian says with a shrug. "But I'm pretty sure that's all they could do. You put a CD inside of it and close it up."[break][break]

His parents had controlled much of what media he'd consumed while under their roof. They'd had all the passwords to the computer he used for schoolwork. It had been a little rush of rebellion when Lulu Flint had taught him how to get around their restrictions.[break][break]

The first computer he'd owned had been slow, and had shrieked like a demon from the distortion world when connecting to the internet. So he tells Clover humorously, "Three years."[break][break]

He's completely at ease in the haunted house.[break][break]

Until a mask flies off the wall and starts spitting ghostly fireballs everywhere, at which point even Cillian looks alarmed. Puca's TELEKINESIS swirls around the ghost and slams it hard against the ground, as though using it to squash a bug. The Sylveon's fur is fluffed up, fangs bared.[break][break]

"Huh," Cillian grunts, recovering from the scare. "Y'know, I think that could've been one of the occupants."

Horror washed over Clover at the three years remark. His elders had been through so much... [break][break]

Sylveon's quick action kept the room from catching on fire, but it couldn't prevent the real damage: Clover's ego. Their overreaction had been undignified. But they rose to their feet valiantly, brushing themselves off. "Er, you think it's one of these guys?" Clover looked between the Yamask and the walkman photograph. It was downright creepy to think about ghost pokemon being people previously. Yamask in particular had a reputation for face stealing - or something like that. [break][break]

She moved to Sylveon's side to look at the pinned ghost. "I can't imagine haunting my own home." There was a special degree of sadness buried in the thought. But Clover had another theory. "What if it was trying to steal my face?"

"Maybe." Cillian shrugs. "Or maybe the mask was already inhabited when they acquired it. People can be real stupid, sometimes."[break][break]

Judging by the immense amount of photographs papering the walls, whoever lived here had enjoyed sharing the adventures of their lives with others. What better way to show off than to bring home a mask they found?[break][break]

"Me neither," he admits; truthfully, Cillian hates to think about his own inevitable death. Be it from the war in the coming days or from old age decades from now, it frightened him.[break][break]

Just like the mask seems to frighten Clover.[break][break]

"It's a decent face," he teases. "Puca's got your back, though."[break][break]

He turns to grin at his Sylveon, then falters.[break][break]

"Uh. Is your Shuckle OK?"

The ghost struggled less under Puca, becoming pacified, just as Cillian confirmed the Sylveon had their back. "Puca's definitely my new bestie, for sure." Of course, all good things had to come to an end: Shuckle's characteristic stillness was punctuated with an odd drooling from its mouth. As Clover looked closer, it's eyes actually seemed to be... red? [break][break]

"Shucky, are y-" It lunged forward with unnatural speed, jaw clacking as it chomped at air where Clover had been standing a half second before. "Wh- what the hell-" Her voice wavered under the unexpected terror of her own pokemon betraying her. She tossed Shuckle's pokeball at it but the ball glowed red, held in place by some ghostly force. The same paranormal energy seemed to push her back hard enough to hit the wall. [break][break]

Then Shuckle dove for Cillian's ankles instead.

A noise between a purr and a growl rumbles in Puca's throat, the Sylveon's blue eyes shining with smug pride.[break][break]

Shuckle decides to ruin the moment.[break][break]

"Clover!"[break][break]

Alarm spikes in his tone as she's thrown back against the wall by some force unseen. Cillian takes a step forward to help them, only to feel Shuckle's gummy bite clamp around his ankle.[break][break]

It would be a lot more impactful if Shuckle had teeth.[break][break]

"Fuck off," he grumbles, shaking his foot to try and dislodge it. But for all the bite doesn't break skin, Shuckle has a damn good hold. Exasperated, Cillian calls for, "Puca."[break][break]

A CURSE burns dark in the Sylveon's eyes before Puca lunges for Shuckle, burying small, sharp fangs into its shell and dragging it back with a DRAINING KISS.[break][break]

"Are you OK?"

The force of slamming into the wall knocks the breath out of his chest, but at least he struck a part of the wall without any sharp frames. Landing elsewhere would have left them with more head trauma and shattered glass from any of the framed art. As it was, they offered a thumbs up as they caught their breath. Puca's attack made Shuckle release Cillian and shiver. Shuckle seemed to go limp, then revitalize with a shake of her head. [break][break]

The possession seemed to be over. "Okay," they wheezed, "maybe this has been enough fun for one night." Their breath returned to them in full, but the excitement of scouring a haunted house had long left them. "Sorry for the, uh, Shuckle gumming." Shuckle hung her head in some approximation of shame. [break][break]

"And if you tell anyone about this, please make me sound cooler." She laughed at her own expense, rubbing the back of her head.
