Stillness defined the Border despite the constant rolling fog that brushed across their ankles. It felt peaceful despite how dangerous stagnation could really be. Robin felt an unusual tinge of nervousness; while she normally felt at peace in the Border, having Melody here with the expectation of finding out more about her powers or more about why she feels so different in this place only added pressure. She didn't want to look like a faker. [break][break]

She wanted to impress Melody, which surprised her. She had left behind the inkling to prove herself when she found Omen. Something about the champion reminded her of her early aspirations to defeat Greyson and protect Hoenn above all else. [break][break]

Marshadow hovered ahead of them. This felt like home to it just as much as the Border felt like home to her. [break][break]

"The trip starts normal," she explained to Melody, "but after a while, I kind of... lose track of time."

drips of salt fell with each step the pokemon took. Gargancle stomped alongside Melody as they entered the borders, allowing Robin to take the lead. It had been a long time since she was last here, memories of her adventures with kyle lopez MATIAS SILPH and PENELOPE LIVY paint a sense of nostalgia over her. [break][break]

"No pressure, just do what you normally do when it happens." she tells her as melody seems to be looking around for something specific here, an ulterior motive to her journey perhaps? Hopefully robin didn't figure out where melody's mind was wandering to. She was looking for someone who shared her last name, trying to figure out if she was dead or not.

"Okay," she concedes. Marshadow blends into some shadow somewhere, though it will always be found when she needs it. Her march forward allows her to forget the concerns. Her body wanders through the Border and steps through different twists of fog and different written paper seals that dance in the windless wind. Before long at all, her mind is far from racing and far empty, too. [break][break]

She comes to a stop. Her expression might look thoughtful, standing before the spirit bridge that loosely connects two floating chunks of rock. There is no thought, however. Her body is an anchor. Her mind is afloat. Open. Open is a better descriptor. [break][break]

If the body is an anchor and the mind is an open door, what is the spirit?

The spirit is like the winds, ever changing, free, uncontrollable. However after Melody's numerous visits to the mechanical kingdom, she learned that it was not that simple. The soul can be tampered with. [break][break]

Many ghost haunted the borders, spirits with regrets, unfinished business, ones that eternally seeking to leave this place and return back to the realm of the living. [break][break]

One such spirit had been following Melody for all this time, plotting, scheming in the shadows, taking pride in her efforts coming to fruition. [break][break]

@madeleine made herself known. Slowly yet surely attempting to force herself into this vessel whispering in Robin's ear. 'Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Let it remember who is responsible for her beautiful long hair.' [break][break]

Melody looks over at robin and feels a strange chill go down her spine. "Robin?? You good?"

The toxic chain phenomena had left Robin on death's door. The heavy-sick feeling of it had made her limbs feel leaden. Breathing was a chore. Her eyelids refused to stay up. Worst of all, she couldn't find herself to care about how much her body ached. She wanted it all to stop, except desire had been a thing of the past. She had been rendered a husk of herself in those weeks. [break][break]

This felt the same. The sick-sweet whispers, the sharp claws on her shoulders, and then - then, her husk spoke. The tone of her voice no longer matched that of Robin's, and the cadence was something else altogether. She turned to Melody with a glint in her eye - [break][break]

"Be good for mother dearest and remember."

Melody's sparkling eyes began to dim with each passing tick of a metronome. All Melody would be able to hear was static and Madeleine's voice coming in clear. [break][break]

She screams, her voice magnified to an extreme level due to her intense emotions. Her hair whips wildly out of control as a fear she thought long dead resurfaced. "You're not dead, you can't be!" she shouts. [break][break]

She only cared of her own survival, no one had it out for her mother...who did it? [break][break]

She - it - cackles. [break][break]

Melody's emotional outburst only feeds the connection Robin has with the ghostly presence. It's validity is not relevant to the reality. Robin's not home, but something else is. It is angry. Dark, paranormal energy emits from it so powerfully that it takes physical form. It is draped in shadow. [break][break]

It's eyes are a fierce red. "You're spread too thin to be any good to anyone," it speaks, voice booming in the empty Border. "You fear failure in one endeavor, so you pick too many to juggle and fail in all of them instead. How pitiful." A will-o-wisp shoots out - from behind it or inside it or beside it - but the fire follows it's will and seeks Melody out.

Melody panics, it IS madeleine. The way she spoke, the way she didn't even look at Melody when she spoke, looking past her instead. [break][break]

Ghostly flames manifest, causing the borders to darken around melody. She hated this place, it always turned on her, the ghosts of her past haunting her. Those she failed, those she scorned, those she stepped on to get to where she was. Nagandel leaps into action, it's PURIFYING SALT wraps around her body and coats her in a thick layer of sandy armor. [break][break]

Melody's eyes furrow at her. She needed to coat robin in the salt, would it trap the spirit in her? purge her? She wasn't sure, she just knew spirits didn't enjoy coming into contact with it. [break][break]

"I'm not afraid of you anymore." she lies as Melody pulls out her baton and points it at the medium. "Let her go or else."

Then, a shadow rave erupts from it.

A shadow rave breaks through the salt armor she had created, sending her back. The malice that filled the ghost made the attack all the more potent. Melody rolls on the floor and quickly shuffles to her feet. There was nothing for her to manipulate here, she was at a significant disadvantage. The clouds wouldn't be able to do anything, everything was too far away. [break][break]

"Mother doesn't know shit you bitch!" she yells back as Melody starts to lose her composure again. Nagandel rushes forward, as an AVALANCHE rushes behind him attempting to fully tackle the marshadow.

It cannot move in time. [break][break]

The avalanche is unexpected from the Nagandel. Snow buries it and condemns it to an icy, silent tomb. There is no space to scream or torment Melody further. It opens its mouth and snow falls in, heavy but light on its tongue. [break][break]

The spirit flees. Robin remains. She comes back to herself in a dark and invisible, suffocating trap. She cannot scream - it feels like the snow in her mouth is going to fill her lungs. For a moment, she is reminded of her near-death experience with palossands that sought to bury her alive.
